Are the Lights Out? -- Library

Post  Chayne on Wed Feb 01, 2012 8:20 pm

Chayne smiled. Aisling's ability to phase through walls would certainly come handy in this situation. Chayne hadn't thought of that. He nodded. "Sounds like a plan. I don't really know where anything is though." He gave a light laugh. "Maybe we should just start here."

Chayne stopped at a door in the hall and reached for knob. He really hoped it wasn't living space or somewhere else private or forbidden to students. The door itself was slightly more extravagant then the others in the hall, and Chayne hoped this marked it as an important public area.

When he finally opened the door, he was caught off guard by the sheer size of the room. Large spaces with high ceilings such as these were something of a rarity where he came from. Was this the library? He wondered if this room was bigger than the ballroom. He hadn't quite been able to gauge the size of the ballroom because of how bright it had been, but he knew it was also very large. Were all the rooms in the castle like that?

Chayne's eyes easily gave off how impressed he was, and his wings shifted a bit behind him. Being in a space this large really made him wish he could fly..

Aisling's eyes widened as she followed Chayne through the ornate doors. open seeing the inside of the library, she let out a low whistle. "wow, this place is amazing," she murmured her eyes muved about the room appreciatively.
"sheesh, if this is the library, in wonder what the classrooms look like...did you have a library under ground, or did you have to get books from the surface?"

Aisling was rather curious about how it would work....she tried to imagine what an underground library would look like, and decided that it actually look pretty cool--kind of like the library in the book Beautiful Creatures...

Aisling jolted slightly when she realized that the title she'd thought up wasn't a book she'd read while a ghost--did she remember something from her life? she mentally shook herself before stepping farther into the gorgeous room.

"Yeah," Chayne agreed as his eyes scanned the multiple shelves. It would be impossible to find anything here during the day. He wondered if he was able to check out books at night. "Uh, a bit of both. We have libraries with books that my people write. Human books are better, but we don't have much access to them." He gave a light laugh. "I wouldn't very well be able to walk into a bookstore and buy one."

Usually Umbras only wrote factual things. Chayne found the human "fiction" genre to be interesting, but his people didn't write like that. Or when they did it was considered junk. That, and they didn't necessarily have a ton of printing presses underground. Human books were so much neater than Umbra books.

Chayne made his way to the first book he saw, a huge one laid open on top of some kind of podium. He flipped through a few of the pages, carefully to avoid ripping any of them with his claws and reading a few lines on each page. An encyclopedia.

"its ok, i wouldn't be able to walk into a normal bookstore either," Aisling replied with a grin. "the books here...i wonder if they have James Patterson! i love his books." she grinned, all bouncy again, not even realizing that she'd remembered something else from her life.

she floated after him and peered over his shoulder at the large book. an encyclopedia?

"jeeze, that thing is huge. i'd like to see someone hauling that around in their backpack...though, with some of the students here, i just might. how heavy do you think it is?"

"Well, at least in your case they would just end up calling the book store haunted. I wouldn't even be able to see the books." Chayne smiled at first then let out something of a sigh. The joke was getting old. This was what he was going to have to deal with. The smile returned as Aisling got excited again, though. "James Patterson? What kinds of books does he write?"

Chayne looked back at the encyclopedia and lifted the side where more of the pages were piled up. It wasn't extremely heavy, but it was at least 3000 pages of random facts. "Too heavy to be carrying around in your backpack." He placed the cover back down on the podium and a bit of dust came out underneath it. "There are people where I live that would actually sit down and read this, though. Cover to cover." He looked back up at Aisling and laughed. "Sad, isn't it?"

"he writes a lot of science fiction books...i think he might have some obsession with fire too. if only he knew about this place!"

she laughed at the idea.

"i don't think i could stand it.." she murmured, looking at the book again.
"i mean, i love to read...but an encyclopedia is kind of pushing it for me, ya know?" Aisling laughed along with Chayne.

"do you have anything particular that you like to read? maybe we can skim through a few books while we're here?"

A visible look of confusion crossed Chayne's face and he looked to Aisling hoping. "Science... fiction? Is that a genre?" Did that really exist? They were two completely completely different concepts. Science and fiction.

Chayne looked to the shelves, unable to stop the spark of excitement that reached his eyes. "I don't know. My people don't really write for entertainment. The only real fiction writer we have is Dymere, and she barely gets away with it. I've only ever read one human book, and I have to say it's probably the best book I've read." He looked back at the encyclopedia again and gestured to it with a clawed finger. "Most of our books are more like this, unfortunately."

"science fictions is.." she paused, trying to figure out how to describe it. "well, its kind of like this place. if someone were to write a story about this place--and they didn't believe that people could have abilities like the students here--it would be considered science fiction. its just a fictional story about characters you wouldn't normally hear about. like ghosts, and aliens, and "superheros". there a lot of fun, though i refuse to read ghost stories now. they're way off, usually. but i really like James pattersons books. he has a series about a group of kids that have avian DNA meshed with their own."

once again, aisling's eyes darted to the encyclopedia. the idea that someone could curl up with a book like that was beyond her, but then again, any reading was better than none. it seemed that she was only now remembering how much she loved to read.

(I love the Maximum Ride series~ ♥ lol)

Chayne took a moment to consider the description Aisling had given him. That was science fiction? It sounded even more outrageous than whet Umbra reffered to as just regular fiction. How did science fit into the equation for any of those? Either way though, Chayne smiled so his fangs showed.

"See? Human books are so much more open-minded. Those kinds of things really do exist, obviously." He held an arm out as if the action somehow served to gesture towards the whole of AALC. "But the only books we have are all about facts. Even Dymere only writes things that are logically possible. The only difference is she writes about people that don't actually exist, and that's the only thing that makes it fiction."

Chayne seemed to be having difficulty explaining it. The term he was really looking for was "realistic fiction". She wrote about things the could have realistically happened, but didn't.

"Bird DNA?" Oh, he guessed that had something to do with science. Already he was interested in the idea. How much DNA was it? Did they have acute senses?.. Were they able to fly? "I'll have to look at that one." He decided with a nod, unable to hold back the excitement that still creeped into his voice.

"there are books like that too, really...some are really good, like the ones by Sarah Dessen...her books are usually about young pre-teen to teen girls, though. they're stories about realistic, and rather sad situations. like the one about the girl getting beat by her boyfriend..."

way to be depressing.

"what about...some older style books? like Hamlet or Lord of the Flies?"

she remembered reading them at some point or another, but she had no idea why.

"hmm...i wonder if they have the Maximum ride series here?"

Aisling peered over Chayne's shoulder to see if there were any labels, like "science fiction" or if she would have to wrack her brain for information about the dewey decimal system

Chayne shrugged. "Like I said, I've only ever read one human book." He shook his head. "I wouldn't know much about older human books. The one I read was written.." He paused a moment, thinking. "not too long ago." Of course, he knew the exact year off the top of his head. 2003. It was his favorite book. Why wouldn't he remember the year?

Chayne made his way to one of the shelves. The word "fiction" on the shelf had immediately caught his eye. Since he didn't have access to these kinds of books back home, he was going to use his time here at Lillegard to familiarize himself with the genre. He was getting to read enough of the impossible to last him a lifetime.

He reached for the first spine he saw. It was such a small book though. It had a red cover with a skull and crossbones on it. Not necessarily welcoming, especially since the books he was used to lacked any cover art at all. The name was Slaughterhouse-Five written by Kurt Vonnegut. He flipped through the pages and the smell of newsprint reached his nose. It actually smelled good.

"what was the name of the human book that you read?" Aisling asked curiously. she followed chayne to the fiction shelve--she figured he would go there. the section filled her mind with images of curling up in libraries and just reading for hours straight. that wasn't an actual memory, but it sure made her heart swell with longing. she looked over chayne's shoulder again, her face pinching slightly at the title. ich. maybe not exactly her type of book, considering, but she would be very happy if Chayne found a book--or a number of books--that he enjoyed here. well, fiction books, anyway

Chayne placed the book back on the shelf where he'd found it, judging it to be too flimsy for the moment. "It's called the Dragon Quintet. It's actually a collection. It had five stories. It was still short though." Chayne gestured back to the book he'd just placed back on the shelf. "Well, longer than that one, but still really short."

Chayne's scanned the spines of the books in search of the author Aisling had mentioned. James Patterson. The spine of the book he'd picked up earlier was marked VON for Vonnegut, so they were labeled by the second names. PAR, PAS, PAT. There they were. Chayne reached a hand towards a book with a blue spine, once again being careful not to damage the book with his nails. "Maximum Ride. The Angel Experiment. James Patterson." Chayne turned the book to the back cover, skimming through the text that was printed there before looking back up to Aisling. "This is it?"

"'Dragon Quintet'? that sounds like it would be a pretty cool story." she was curious as to what the story would be about. it almost sounded like a title for a sci-fi story, but she knew that this wasn't the case. regardless, she wondered if she would have liked it.

"yea, that's the first book in the series. i think you'll like it a lot. let's see...there's Angel Experiment, School's Out Forever, Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports, Max, Fang, Angel....and there's supposedly a newer title too, but i haven't read it." it just figured that the two things she remembered from her life were books and music.

Chayne nodded with a smile. He definitely wanted to read it. Really, he'd read any of the books in this library at this point. "I wonder if I can even check books out this late." He looked back out the aisle where he'd come from. Was there a checkout area. How did one go about checking out books on the surface anyway? Was it even the same? Maybe he'd have to come back in the morning and try to find the book again. If he knew generally where it was it shouldn't be too hard.

she had no idea if there was some automated book count in the castle or anything---weirder things had been discovered here--but she figured it was best not to risk it. plus, there was plenty more to explore, and only nine hours to do it!

Chayne went back to eyeballing the shelf once more, getting an idea of just where on it the book sat before placing it back where he'd originally found it. Hopefully he'd be able to find it easily enough once morning broke.

He looked back at Aisling with a smile. "Okay. Where else can we go?" Chayne proceeded to make his way back out of the aisle and towards to doors they'd initially entered through. He knew nothing else about the castle. If Aisling knew any more then he did, then he'd happily follow her to any other location they could investigate. Otherwise it just seemed to be random exploration.

"hmmm...," aisling closed her eyes and thought for a moment, floating right through a set of bookshelves as she followed Chayne towards the door. from what she could remember, there wasn't much to see on this floor besides the library and ballroom....and then there was the theater, but that was clear on the other end of the school. there were classrooms on this floor, but she didn't know how much they would interest chayne.

"well, there are the history, math, and science classrooms nearby...or we could head up the stairs in the library to the second or third floors and sneak into the teachers lounge--" she laughed at the thought-- "oh, and the music room and theater are an the first floor, but their on the other end."

wow, she thought its mostly just classrooms, now that i think about it...

Chayne considered the locations Aisling had listed for a moment. He didn't want to get in trouble for sneaking into the teacher's lounge, that was for sure. He was sure there'd be something interesting in the science classroom, but he was planning to take science while he was here, of course. So he'd have plenty of opportunities to see the room later.

Chayne looked towards Aisling as he reached for the handle to the library door. "We could check out the theater?" It actually was a question. He wondered if it was actually worth the walk considering the stage would be the only he couldn't see if he chose to see a show there. But if it would keep Aisling from getting them into trouble then it would do.
