Just another cliche'

Of course, one of the first places Al would go to would be the library. Al could be a justification to the claim that people who wear glasses read a lot. For the claim that those who wear glasses are ingenious, well, that's a little bit pushing it. It was understandable that Alexei went for the one thing that any big place should have and the one place that Al would get very familiar with. Al wasn't disappointed with the rows of books that lined the shelves and was hoping that there would be at least some favorite books and series.

Alexei had only wanted to find the place, then implement the just thought of experiment. At first it was to see if teleportation would work from one side of the island to the other but when Al saw how tall the castle was and saw the clock tower, a new thought popped up. Would Al be able to teleport while falling from the highest point of the edifice before the inevitable splat? As Al had gotten closer to the castle, and gauged the massive height, that question niggled at Al more. It was risky but it wasn't like Al wasn't gonna live forever.

At the moment though, Al was distracted. Figuring the best place to start was the closest shelf, Al slinked over to the shelf and examined the book spines. Some called to be pulled out from their cramped quarters and flipped through while others begged to be left as they were. Alexei didn't mind just doing this, looking through books that randomly caught the eye. It was the best method of finding a good book in Al's opinion. Al stopped for a moment as a coughing fit came about.

Alexei suspected that someone had been sick and didn't cough up the info (no pun intended) so now Al was sick too. On the beginning of a long stay at a foreign place filled with all sorts of people with no real idea what to do. There wasn't all the medical help offered here like back home, where a doctor lived like 9 feet away from you to tend to your every cough and although Al's cold wasn't as bad as the last one, it still sucked. Alexei pulled out a small packet of anti-bacterial wet whipes and pulled one out. This was a normal thing. With clean hands (stuffing the used whipe in a pocket) Al went on with the little book adventure.

"Ooh, what's this?"

Alexei pulled out a worn red book with gold inscription that said Grimm's Tales.

The smell of old paper was always comforting for some reason. Sometimes the ones that were to dusty stung her sensitive nose, but the crispness of each page full of ink, settled her fast paced thoughts. They were full of things she couldn't yet understand. She was at a disadvantage because she grew up sheltered. But , there was hope. Draiman had helped. She learnt her letters from a scientist. She knew how to read, but the hard part were the complex words. Words that had other words which meant the same thing. Also the strange wordings different people used.

Chimney walked around in her human form trailing her fingers against the spins as she went along. She liked little stories. Fiction she was told. They were simple, and taught her lessons. Stealing is bad. Chimney had told Draiman that, but he said they 'borrowed'. It was hard to put together the meaning of borrow when she didn't give things back.

As she was going through the shelves Chimney smelt a scent she hadn't encountered before. Her curiosity lead her to a person who looked quite feminine looking. Chimney knew not to assume though. There was a book in it's hands and she tried reading the title. 'Grimm's Tales'. Tales? Weren't those like stories? "Excuse me, what is that book about?" It was quite big, so Chimney wasn't sure how it was one story.

Alexei was currently reading Little Red Riding Hood, the original story which was pretty grim. Al was at the part where Red first meets the wolf when a girl's voice drifted to Al's ears. Alexei turned from the book and focused on the girl. Al realized that she was the first person to say anything to Al. The girl's question was retrieved from somewhere in Al's mind. Alexei peeked at the cover, momentarily forgetting what book sat in Al's hands.

"It's a compilation of many stories. Do you know the story of Little Red Riding Hood? That's the one I'm reading right now. Of course, there's also Cinderella, Snow White..." Alexei trailed of, realizing Al was starting to rant. Alexei peered at the girl, growing ever increasingly curious. One of the aspects that fascinated Al about the school was the fact that there was so many different people with so many different characteristics. It gets boring being around people with the same powers, after a while, an opportunity like this is something you'll jump on.

It would be very impolite to ask outright and not very fun or surprising if Alexei asked people what made them unique. It was enough to know that since they all practically lived together, one way or another, Al would see what the fellow classmates could do. In the meantime, Al needed to make new friends. It isn't good to live in a school without making any friends.

"Ah, my name is Alexei, what's yours?"

It was interesting to chimney how the girl had replied to her and hadn't even seemed to have read the whole book. She must have used magic! Chimney had no idea that the girl had probably read these stories before. Chimney didn't really remember any of the the stories the girl mentioned. Staring at the girl she walked closer and tried to look at the book all around. What was the trick to reading so good? If the book was magic that would make things much easier!

"I'm Chimney. I haven't heard these stories before." She reached a single finger out to the book to touch it. The magic could flow into her! Then she could be magical too! Chimney didn't count science as magic. Chimney remembered reading a story about a boy with beans and a girl with long hair, just like her! But chimney's hair was orange and yellow, not gold like the girls.

"Chimney," Al repeated to get the feel of the name. Alexei immediately pictured a fireplace and a chimney puffing smoke. Al had never heard of anyone being named Chimney but there was a lot Al had to learn. Alexei figured it would be better to leave behind all pre-conceptions and notions Al had and learn whatever it was to learn in the new school. Back home, many were wondering why Alexei had agreed to come to the school and Al had simply said out of boredom but wasn't it something more?

Al watched curiously as Chimney touched the book with one finger. Alexei held on to the surprise that threatened to appear at the fact that she didn't know any of the stories mentioned. Who hadn't herd of Cinderella? There was always a story of Cinderella wherever you went no matter what language and Little Red Riding Hood? Alexei wasn't sure what to say next, taking a while to form a sentence.

"Why don't I tell you some?"

Chimney smiled at the person as they said her name. "Yes! I am Chimney! I got to chose it all special! My official name is Experiment 20. Draiman chose his name too! He is my friend. Draiman is experiment 19!" She remembered the day as clearly as it had happened only moments ago. She was placed into an elegant room and there were cameras. Watching her behavior in the environment.

The fire place had been lovely and warm. The soot in it's chimney had been soft, even though it was dirty. It was fun to sleep in as well! When they had taken her out and cleaned her up, she was put in line with the other experiments. Draiman was new around this time and suggested we have things called code names. Other experiments had names already but liked the idea. Chimney only knew she was 20. He had been 19 since the old 19 had been taken away.

At the mention of being told the stories she didn't know Chimney sat down on the floor and looked up at Alexei, "Oh! Yes please!"
