Where Would Poe Be? Empty Where Would Poe Be?

Post  Spyridon Thu Mar 08, 2012 1:30 pm

During Spyridon's explorations he had yet to take a look at the library. He was severely disappointed in himself. He loved reading - mainly old English novels and poems - so it was a real shock he'd been on the island for well over a month and sill hadn't scoped out the library.

And so, after he had finished training down at the beach this morning he had made his way up here to see what the stock had to offer. He hadn't even bothered to change so his shorts were still soaked through up to mid-thigh and his silver hair was dripping onto the floor, creating a nice little path of drips for anyone to follow through the castle.

The Jinn pushed open the library door and looked around. Old. Dusty. Absolutely full of books. This is what a real library was.

In the privacy of the abandoned looking room he smiled, gliding forwards.

"Now...Where would Poe be?" he asked himself, looking around. Edgar Allen Poe was by far his favourite author and he wouldn't be best pleased if the library didn't have any of his works.

Where Would Poe Be? Empty Re: Where Would Poe Be?

Tony wanted to say that it had been a hard day at work today. But to be completely and strictly honest, he hadn't worked as hard as he was meant to. The library seemed to operate fine without his constant maintenance, so he often spent most of his time searching for ways to occupy his time with something productive. Perhaps rearrange some books, dust up some abandoned corners, decorate with some much needed foliage.

Seeing as no one was present in the library, Tony thought he'd take the opportunity to read some books for himself. Growing out his arms into many long tendrils, he pinched several books from the shelves, holding them flipped open before his gaze. It didn't seem to take many more than a few seconds to flick to the next page, even then, he seemed to be juggling between reading several at once. One moment he was solving the curious case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, the next he was stepping through the wardrobe to Narnia, before simply walking into Mordor to destroy the ring.

When his foot inadvertently stepped into the tiny puddle that had formed on the floor, Tony's instincts jumped to the worst case scenario. With a fright, he accidentally released his hold on the books, sending them clattering to the floor. He gasped with panic, immediately reaching to gather them again. What - what was this atrocity?! Piling the books to one side, he eyed the water droplets with disgust before following the trail to his culprit. He picked up the word 'Poe', and knew immediately who he was referring to, but certain matters had to be addressed first.

"Excuse me," he called, his voice stern and unpleasant. He paced right up to the student, reaching to tug on the edge of his cheongsam. "What is the meaning of this?" he demanded, gesturing to the offending trail.

He head snapped over his shoulder when the books hit the floor and he watched silently as the little plant creature gathered them together.

His brow quirked when the creature followed his little trail of drips to him.

His eyes trailed over the droplets then rested on Tony. It was water. It would dry up soon enough. Why was the creature (was it male or female?) so unhappy about it?

"It'll dry in a short while," he muttered.

Tony's eyes squinted at Spyridon's less than satisfying response. "Are you trying to imply that water should be carelessly splattered around like some sort of haywire sprinkler?" he scoffed in disbelief, looking rather offended at the very thought of it. "I should say not!"

He plucked a random book from a nearby shelf - an aged looking history book - waving it to show its significance. "I do hope you realise that water is very much capable of damaging the beautiful texts of these books - and how extraordinarily difficult they'd be to replace. I do insist that you must dry yourself off before taking another step further in this library." His foot tapped with impatience.

"I am implying nothing. Merely pointing out the fact that the water will dry up in a short while." His eyes trailed over the path. "Its not an extraordinary amount." He'd hate to have any great amount of water near any books in his possession but the few droplets and small puddles scattered across the floor were minimal. Nothing to be upset over.

He eyed the book as it was waved in front of him. "In this instance water would only damage the books if the librarian wasn't doing their job properly and books had been left on the floor." He arched a slim brow. "Is the librarian doing their job properly?"

Dry himself? He'd much rather just strip of his shorts. But he had a feeling the little creature would start a rant about being properly clothed in the presence of the books.

"Do you have a towel here for such situations as this or do I have to traipse half way across the castle grounds?"

At his claim, Tony's gaze retreated back to the puddles, which were indeed drying. However, that certainly wasn't Tony's point at all. The water shouldn't have even been there in the first place.

Tony scoffed as the student turned the accusations towards himself. He spun around on his foot back towards the books he'd left, picking them all up with individual vines from his long fingers. He gave Spyridon a sharp look as if to ask, 'Are you happy now?'

"You poor soul. Nobody must've taught you proper library etiquette." He shook his head sadly. "If you should enter this beautiful room in this state again, I will not allow you to enter. Is that clear?"

Another vine started to grow from his already bundled hand, wavering towards Spyridon expectantly. "Remove your wet clothing immediately."

The Jinn might have cracked a grin at the sharp look he received if he were more like his brother. But he wasn't a fan of showing people how he felt. So he kept his amusement to himself, merely looking down at the creature - he'd have to ask what species he was later - passively.

"Crystal," he responded. Wet clothing = no library access. Easy enough to understand. He wasn't quite sure yet whether or not he'd heed it. Best part of being a Jinn with a lot of practise in magic? the ability to shift into objects. He could, in essence, phase through the wall with a fair amount of effort, grab a book, and phase through the wall again. Completely undetected,

But he wasn't one for exerting unnecessary effort. If push comes to shove and he really wanted a book, he'd just knock the man aside. He was short enough to do so. Anyone under six foot was short enough for him to do so with.

A silver brow arched slightly but he didn't hesitate in pulling the wet shorts down over his hips. The Cheongsan he was wearing stayed put, though; the splits in the side all the way up to his waist revealed a fair amount of bare skin as he held the shorts out. He wasn't in the practise of wearing any form of underwear. Unneeded. As long as he had something that looked fairly decent and comfortable covering him he was content.

A combination of underwear and his skin-tight shorts was uncomfortable at best. So he just forfeited underwear.

Crystal..? He blinked. Ah, crystal clear. Tony wasn't about to admit that he had been at all confused, so he just gave a small attentive nod. "Good."

Impatiently tapping his foot, awaited the removal of Spyridon's clothing. The empty vine reached forward for the shorts if he didn't pass it over soon. "Hand it ove--" He cut himself short as his gaze became distracted by... something else. Had... had Spyridon been wearing anything at all beneath them? He stared at the split in the cheongasm - which was far too close to him, considering his height - peering too hard for a moment. His eyes squinted, before he took a tottering step backwards, shaking his head as if to rid himself of the image.

"Keep your shorts," he snootily proclaimed, just the slightest bit ruffled. "Now what was it you were looking for? Poe?" He peered at him, slightly curious, but not at all wanting to go near his semi-naked visitor.

Spyridon's brow arched at the cut off sentence. Why had he cut off? He eyed the man for a few moments before following his gaze.

...Why was he staring there?

He wasn't gay, was he? His eyes turned back to Tony and he let out a small cough, taking a small, subtle step backwards away from the man.

He'd rather keep his distance from people of that persuasion. He didn't have much of a tolerance for them.

He did relax slightly, though, when his short acquaintence stepped backwards. If he had a reaction like that he couldn't be gay, right? That put his buzzing mind at slight ease. God knows he didn't want to deal with any damned flirty guys chasing his skirt.

With a jerky nod he pulled his shorts back on and readjusted his cheonsam.

"Yes," he replied. "Preferably of his tales though a poem or two wouldn't be entirely unwelcome."

The whole 'take off your clothes in a public area' was meant to serve as some sort of humiliation. He had reason to believe that, thanks to other past experiences, people didn't really like walking around without their protective clothing (which seemed to apply anywhere but beaches). But this student didn't seem to give two flips about whether he was pantless or not. How simply barbaric! How primitive! Leering at him, Tony was hardly daunted by his height as he readjusted his mane of leaves, which may have been slightly ruffled. But at least he felt a little better about his own flustering - he could pin most of the blame on this student for his indecency.

"Of course," he simply nodded. The librarian held his tongue, having the distinct feeling that Spyridon probably didn't want to know that he was in the wrong area of the library, and that the correct place was a few rows down. He'd probably take unnecessary offense.

He spun on his heel, stacking the books that he was carrying on one arm as he walked down the corridor, balancing them carefully. He'd glance back at Spyridon briefly to make sure he was most definitely following, before focusing on the path before him towards the right section. "Who might you be anyway?" he asked, trying to make casual conversation. "I suppose you already know I'm the librarian of this place, but it's quite wonderful to meet with the other faces of this place."

"Ah, so there is Poe here. Excellent." He hadn't been sure that there was. You'd be surprised at how many libraries he had been to that didnt have any of Poe's writings at all.

He watched the small plant-person walk off for a moment before following at a languid pace, bare feet slapping softly against the ground with every step.

"I'm Spyridon. Yourself?" Why not try to have a decent conversation? The plant-man hadn't annoyed Spyridon so the least he could do would be to try to engage in small talk. Even as much as it pained him to do so. Spyridon was the type of person that just fell silent when he had nothing to say and carried about his daily business in silence.

"Yes, I had assumed you were." Meet the other faces? Did he not leave the library often? I suppose a librarian wouldnt leave the library all that often.

"Of course there is!" Tony immediately scoffed. "It's be simply atrocious not to possess any of his timely classics." His head was held in a high and haughty manner as he navigated the library's rows.

The sound of bare feet did irritate them, though he hardly showed it on the outside. It was so... primitive. Didn't anyone here conform to the standards of a modern society?

"Tony Sharp," he said, peering over his shoulder to give the student a nod. "Spyridon is quite the.. oddly name, I do say. You're not from around here, are you? Somewhere... oriental, perhaps?" He peered at the cheongasm a moment more before continuing.

Finally, he arrived at a particular bookcase. His vines reached up, to about the fourth shelf, and despite the book names being out of sight of his shorter body, his vines seemed to have no problem in skimming along the books there. Finally, a collection of Poe's short stories was pulled out - the book thick and heavy. His vines, unable to carry it for long, set it on the ground before Spyridon. "Does this satisfy you?"

Post  Spyridon Fri Mar 23, 2012 6:12 pm

"I agree." He was always disappointed when a library he visited didn't have any of Poe's works.

His eyes flickered over the titles of a few books as he passed them, still following behind the plant-man, looking for a title that struck his fancy. As much as he loved Poe, he would love to find a new author that he could stick his teeth into.

"Pleasure, Mr. sharp." He returned the nod respectfully then shook his head. "I'm from America. The Wiciyabina group of the Assiniboine tribe in North Dakota." Yes, he was pretty sure the man had little idea of Native Americans but he didn't much care. "But, yes, I have lived in China for a great many years." The only indication of that was the slight lilt to his accent on certain words.

When the book was set down in front of him he knelt on one knee and flipped the cover and first few pages until he found the contents page. His eyes ran over the jumble of English words, making sense of most of them. He hummed appreciatively. "Yes, thank you."

America? The plant-person looked thoroughly unconvinced as his pupil-less yellow eyes flicked once again over the student. But then he nodded - Native American. He hadn't thought many of them were still around in modern times. This man was practically an item of history, and Tony was interested. The more knowledge, the merrier. But at least one of his assumptions had been correct. China? The man certainly looked it in the cheongsam. The treant resisted asking why he was in what appeared to be the female version though.

"Tell me, what's it like there? I'm assuming it's not quite the holiday destination? And what about China? I've heard it's quite the beauty, but I've yet the opportunity to visit. I'm afraid they don't reserve aeroplane seats for botany." He tittered at his own joke.

"You're quite welcome," he smirked as Spyridon thanked him. "You know, I do have other collections of his. I have Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque, or a collection of poems. Though I'm sure it'd be quite the weight to carry around." His head tilted inquisitively. "Unless you don't mind?"

Post  Spyridon Sun Mar 25, 2012 3:25 pm

"America? Well, I didn't live in a village, town or city. I lived in the forest with my pack. I don't know much about holiday destinations." He hadn't actually ever been on a holiday... He had spent an hour or two down at the lakeside by the village with his brother but that was it. It couldn't even be considered a holiday, could it?

He smiled a little at the thought of China. "Yes, China is beautiful." His lip twitched a little. "I would definitely invest some time in trying to find a way there at some point."

His head bobbed. "Yes, I think I'd like to take those, too, if you don't mind." He needed as much practise reading in English as he could. After seventy years of not even glancing at an English word his ability to read said language had deteriorated greatly. He'd never lost the ability to speak it, but speaking and reading were incredibly difficult.

Living in the forest explained his... primitiveness. His squint was only mildly disapproving, but no words were spoken. But at least it seemed his was trying to improve his uneducated ways, with the finest classics too. "You could say Scotland was one, no? Perfect temperature, plenty of rain..." He hummed to himself.

"I'll most definitely attempt to," he nodded. "Perhaps I could try to be counted as part of the luggage, hmm? They'd never notice..."

He beamed at Spyridon's eagerness for more books - seeing the students read always made him feel to pleased. "Of course!" he responded, with just the faintest trace of life in his normally snooty tone. He vines reached upwards to the same spot again, plucking a few more of Poe's collective works from the shelves, and again, the weight causing him to place it before the student once again. "Please, take your time. His works are to be savoured like an exquisite meal."

Post  Spyridon Mon Mar 26, 2012 3:17 am

"As it would be," he agreed. Scotland did seem like a nice place. Well, the part of it he had stopped to glance at through his searchings. "If I were here for a holiday," he continued. "As it were, I'm not. I have reasons to be here. And, unfortunately, its not to admire the scenery."

"Human's have a way with that." Human's didnt notice the most obvious things when they were shoved under their noses. The supernatural had been living side-by-side with them for god knows how many years and only a very small amount of them knew the supernatural really existed.

He nodded. He planned to take his time. He didn't see reading as a chore to get done as fast as you could like his brother. He liked to pace himself through books, enjoy the small details you could only pick up if you read every sentence instead of scanning through a page.

That and with his difficulty with the English language he wasn't going to getting through these books at break-neck speed any time soon. It'd probably take days to get through each. And he'd need to reread them once or twice to fully understand things.

But he was willing to do that. Poe was an excellent author. One that he would take the time to reread the works of just to enjoy the story another time 'round even if he could read English perfectly.

"When I return these, would you suggest something else to read?" Spyridon always felt the need to have a book on the go. The book that he had been reading he had just finished the previous night. So he had come down to the library in search. And came back more fruitful than he had imagined. But when he finished these books, he'd need something else to read. And he wanted something he hadn't read before. Something different but also a good read. He hoped Tony could point him in the right direction.

"Hmm?" Tony looked to Spyridon with interest at his words. He certainly seemed to imply that there was some sort of tale behind his visit here - and Tony was all ears for any kind of story. What kind of librarian would he be otherwise? "Pardon my curiosity, but what sort of reasons would that be? Our superior teaching facilities? Our extensive collection of literature?" With a small smile, he gestured with a vine towards the rest of the room. "Or is it something else?"

His latter question made Tony beam happily - he did always love that question. He did always love hearing that question. "Of course! Come with me." And with that, he moved just a few paces down the row. He didn't have to travel far, and he'd already picked out two more books - Robert Louis Stevenson's Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde,Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, and Steven King's The Shining.

He glanced up towards Spyridon expectantly. "I hope that you will find satisfaction in these. They do hold some certain similarities with Poe, if you prefer those genres." He paused a moment. "Anything else?"
