Someone's Luck Empty Someone's Luck

((Leon and Owen's O/D S3 assignment X3))

Leon didn't even say anything upon looking at the list. It took him a moment to decide what his reaction should be, but finally he just shook his head. This was just his luck. Or maybe it was just Owen's luck. Actually, he wouldn't have been surprised if Professor Blake had done it on purpose. Leon hadn't missed Owens hateful stares across the classroom, surely Blake hadn't either.

It wasn't all bad though. It was up in the mountains and he knew the area well; he practically lived there. Leon would be fine there. Owen... Leon didn't have high hopes for the boy, needless to say. Maybe he'd just leave Owen to fend for himself in the mountains. If all went well, the boy wouldn't come back. Sure he himself would fail the assignment, but that particular consequence had never stopped him from being entirely unproductive before.

After fighting off this strong urge, Leon turned to away from the list. It seemed the other students had already left. Honestly, the mountains were his place, anyway. After all that had happened at the cliffs, he'd grown to hate the area. If he chose to simply leave this assignment unfinished, he'd probably just end up going somewhere else into the mountains to kill time anyway.

What he wouldn't do, however, is let Owen slow him down. He wanted to find this stupid item as quickly as possible and then get the hell out of dodge.

That jerk. That evil, fiendish, stupid, scheming jerk. It was all his fault. It was directly Leon's fault that he'd somehow winded up, not just in the same classroom, but forced to work together as a pair. Owen wanted to kick something over, anything. But from the way the universe worked, it seemed like it'd only just come back and kick him. Wasn't worth the risk.

Owen was late - disastrously late. In fact, he was hoping that Leon would just give up and go without him. He would've given anything to worm his way out of the situation, but the professor was long gone, and Owen found himself staring once again at a face he'd grown to loathe so, so much.

At first, he tried to keep it casual. Stubby hands squeezed into the pockets of his jeans, and the boy assumed an indifferent, callous sort of expression. So he was paired with Leon. No skin off his nose. Well, except that it was, but that was besides the point. Brown eyes leered at the opposite boy, trying to hide that he was frantically panicking within. The next few hours would be torture, there was no way around it.

"So I'm stuck with you," he mumbled to himself. Should he cross his arms in an attempt to look somewhat intimidating? Ah, nope, they remained firmly glued to his pockets. No matter how long Owen tried to keep his gaze focused on the demon, his eyes managed to slip away again towards the ground. "You better not hold me back or nuthin'..."

Watching Owen approach, Leon actually decided that he'd make a genuine effort to not belittle the boy except in retaliation to any off-hand comments he may make. With this, he would go no further than Owen. He recalled his meeting with Ndale at the carnival. Though they'd never gotten along well before, they had managed to avoid ripping eachother's throats out. Off-hand comments were fine in Leon's book. It was all just a matter of Owen's intelligence and how seriously he took it. Leon's learned that intelligence was something that Owen had very little off, to be placing any sort of hope in it.

Leon looked away a moment, laughing a bit though minus the slightly malevolent undertone that usually seemed to accompany his laughter. "Looks like it." There were still remnants of his laugh left when he looked back up and it gathered to form that hated smirk. Leon moved to approach Owen and the path at a steady gait, pocketing his own hands. "You ever been up to the mountains?"

Stop laughing. Just stop laughing, you moron. Stop it. Irritation prickled up his spine. It seemed there was little that the other boy could do that wouldn't somehow grate uncomfortably at his nerves. And that smirk - oh, it was the icing on the cake. A poisonous cake. He huffed, looking away as if he was somehow offended by his mere presence.

"'Course I have," he mumbled unconvincingly under his breath at the question. "Sometimes... wander around there when I'm bored. Y'know." He left the remark hanging at that. He was fairly certain that Leon wouldn't believe it - and even if he did, he was even more certain that his legs would be dead before they'd even made it halfway. It begged the question of why he'd bothered with those lies. He'd never considered even once of trekking all the way up there.

"Let's just get it over with," he grumbled, moving to continue along the path, with or without Leon. And why didn't he bring his own hoodie? The thought would only be the beginning of his annoyances.

Someone's Luck Empty Re: Someone's Luck

Post  Leon Barner Wed Apr 04, 2012 9:06 pm

Owen's reaction truthfully wanted to make Leon laugh even more, but he held it in. Apparently Owen was uncomfortable with any slight show of joy. Fine, but there should be no doubt in his mind that Leon wants to be somewhere else just much as Owen.

No, Leon didn't think Owen spent anytime up in the mountains. More likely, he'd combat his boredom by sleeping it off or eating, whichever was easier at any given time. Still, Leon showed no outward reaction to the lie. "Good. So do I." The notion made Leon want to shake his head. Owen was so tactless. Why lie about something when it was moments away from being disproved anyway? The amount of time Owen spent - or didn't spend - would be obvious once they reached it. This also rendered moot the option of pointing out the lie. It wasn't even worth the fuss.

"My thoughts exactly." Leon began taking longer strides to pull ahead of Owen, superior height giving him the advantage of longer legs. He pulled his hood up over his head so the almost permanent, scar-like burns showed through the holes in the back of his hoody. There was never a point to healing them. Likely, he'd up opening them again within the hour anyway.

Someone's Luck Empty Re: Someone's Luck

Leon didn't seem to object to his little white lie. Well, either he believe him which he severely doubted, or it wasn't worth the effort. Owen had plenty of reason to believe that it would be the latter. Whatever. Owen was determined not to let weakness show - he didn't need to give Leon another reason to look down on him.

A groan escaped his throat as Leon overtook him. Great, so now Leon had to be ahead of him? His eyes narrowed as he peered at the scars on his back. They looked... sore. A possible weak area...? He tried to shove the idea from his mind. He wasn't here to start fights. He wanted to make it out of this little trip alive. Somewhat.

Owen paced faster to try and keep up with Leon, although once he'd matched his pace, he would look away mindlessly as if he wasn't exerting the extra effort in merely trying to keep up. While Owen would've been contented with silence, right now, it just felt.. awkward. Perhaps conversation would take his mind off things - even if the responses would likely annoy him. "So," he started. "How about those weaknesses you're meant to tell me."

Someone's Luck Empty Re: Someone's Luck

Post  Leon Barner Wed Apr 04, 2012 10:02 pm

Leon succeeded in keeping a relatively straight face as Owen struggled to keep up. He was tempted to say something snarky on this point, but referred back to his original decision not to intentionally start trouble. Following this, it seemed the day was going to be rather boring.

Leon could feel the awkwardness growing between them, but truthfully he didn't care. He knew Owen was awkward. It was one of those facts that annoyed the hell out of him. Besides, he was focused on keeping his pace fast enough that it would be difficult for Owen to keep up. Owen was in a hurry to get the assignment finished; Leon had every intention to test the intensity of this desire. "Weakness." He corrected him. "Singular."

Leon took a rather long time to think, and for a moment it seemed as though he wasn't going to say anything else. He could always just say gold. Owen already knew about this. However, Leon knew he felt iffy about. Owen didn't need confirmation. Though Leon had no doubt that Owen wouldn't believe him no matter what he said, he felt a need to list something even remotely realistic... But at the same time, something he could get a kick out of. Another smile crossed his lips, however he urged it to be more genuine, as if inspired some inner thought. "Weakness: There's a girl at home." No, there wasn't. There wasn't a girl in the world to affect him this way. Except perhaps Feign, but this was in a slightly different way. He shrugged. "Strength: well I guess I've amassed quite the immunity to burns, but that would be the least of them."

Leon looked to make eye contact with Owen, raising a brow that seemed to urge him on. Leon gave up his two without much of a struggle. He was curious to see how much of a struggle Owen would put on.

Someone's Luck Empty Re: Someone's Luck

Post  Owen Mueller Wed Apr 04, 2012 10:22 pm

He hadn't expected Leon to slow down at all, so Owen resumed his fast pace - fast for him, anyway. He was pretty confident he could keep it up - the path hadn't started inclining yet at the very least. His expression was still apathetic - and it took effort to maintain such a cool.

He had the feeling that Leon would just bring up the gold or some other useless weakness that he already knew about, especially when he said 'singular'. He waited in anticipation for Leon to go ahead already, but the seconds stretched out too long for his liking. It was at the point where Owen was more than ready to remind him gently that he should just spill his 'weakness' already when he finally talked. Owen's expression snapped into immediate rage - draw dropping, eyes leering coldly. A girl. A girl at home. What was the freaking use of that?!

In fact, even when Leon described his resistance to burns, Owen's mind was only focused on his pathetic weakness. How the heck was he supposed to work with a girl at home? Could he - what - just stop everything and give her a call to drop by? And how was she a 'weakness' anyway? How--- Owen's outraged expression asked all of these questions. And even despite the boiling anger, when he spoke, his voice was still dull and monotonous - with just a slight strain. "Are you kidding me."

He huffed, looking purposefully away from Leon in irritation. "Those're totally crap, gimme something better," he bitterly muttered. After all, how could he be expected to do the same in return if Leon's were terrible?

Someone's Luck Empty Re: Someone's Luck

Post  Leon Barner Wed Apr 04, 2012 10:40 pm

Leon was unable to prevent a low chuckle from resounding in his throat at Owen's reaction. His jaw actually dropped; he looked like a buffoon. Wait, he was a buffoon.

A name, he needed a name. It would be easiest if he used the name of somebody he was actually familiar with. He almost visibly scowled at the first name to come to mind, but managed to push it back in time. "I'm perfectly serious. Jessica Reed. I call her Jess. She would be the Jami to this," Leon gave a Owen a quick head to toe glance just before finishing the sentence. "Owen."

Leon would have to force himself to recall his earlier relationship with Jess. Presently he hated her guts, but hey, there weren't many people in the world that he actually liked or tolerated. He entertained himself by imagining her reaction if she were to find out about this lie, and he allowed the thought to renew his smile. It died down a bit, however, as he changed the subject slightly. "Just to clarify, do you actually believe me incapable of feeling any real emotion towards another living person or are you just upset that this particular weakness isn't something you can easily exploit?" Leon felt no need to further explain his strength. It was something that should have been obvious. But you never knew with Owen.

Someone's Luck Empty Re: Someone's Luck

Post  Owen Mueller Wed Apr 04, 2012 11:15 pm

Stop laughing at me, he leered at him, hoping that somehow, the command would telepathically reach him. It didn't, of course.

Jessica Reed? Owen didn't want to believe it for one moment, but he had no reason not to believe him other than the fact that he hated him... But wasn't that a good enough reason anyway? But when he mentioned her name, he notably stiffened, his eyes angling to the path directly before him. He really didn't want to hear that name right now - in association to anything. "Whatever."

But it looked like he'd have to let Leon's lame excuse for a weakness slide for now. But his brows furrowed yet again as Leon continued to talk. Did he really need to flower his language with so many long words? Owen had never excelled at English, so he certainly felt rather dumb as he rattled on at him. He didn't know what to say in response though - because part of him knew it was the latter. His lips tightened into a frown before he responded. "I jus' thought it wasn't fair," he mumbled.

So of course, that meant it was Owen's turn to spill his strengths and weaknesses. He hadn't really considered what he was going to say. He certainly couldn't think of a strength that Leon would believe, and no weaknesses that he wanted to admit. He simply hurriedly paced in silence before the idea arrived to him. "My strength'd be... Well, I've dealt with a lotta injuries before." Was that the best he could come up with? But it was still true - there wasn't many people who could admit to having their foot impaled before. "My weakness..." He paused in thought for a while. Maybe he'd pick something obscure, like Leon had. Something that would be impossible to use against him. He glanced to Leon. "Frogs." Because really, what were the chances of frogs showing up in the mountains?

Someone's Luck Empty Re: Someone's Luck

Post  Leon Barner Wed Apr 04, 2012 11:41 pm

Owen had an appropriate reaction to the comparison. Frankly, Leon didn't like comparing himself Owen either, but it seemed the best way to have Owen understand it. Actually, Leon was pleased with this course of action. Though he didn't much like it, it almost had the effect of humanizing him. Yes, he was indeed capable of real emotion; it didn't happen often, but he was capable of it. Yes, he had a life before AALC; in fact, he was trying to reclaim. Maybe it had the effect of creating some sort of empathy for himself. Owen seemed to think him nothing more than a monster, but he was no more a monster than Jessica or Cass or even Feign.

Leon simply listened as Owen brought up his own weakness and strength. He was particularly curious to hear what sort of strength Owen would come up with. Weaknesses were obvious; Owen was human. The list could go on for days. At his response, Leon just seemed to think a moment before giving one-sided shrug. He wouldn't underestimate the power of repetition, after all, it was how he'd come to be =unaffected by burns. He'd give Owen the strength. It was.. decent.

Leon's eyebrows creased in confusion at Owen's weakness however. Frogs? That's it...? He collected his facial expression to bring it back to neutral once more. "What about them? You just don't like them?" He raised an eyebrow. "Scared of them?" His tone was equally neutral. Not teasing, non-judgmental.

Someone's Luck Empty Re: Someone's Luck

Post  Owen Mueller Thu Apr 05, 2012 12:11 am

No matter what relationship or whatever that Leon apparently had at home, Owen was fairly confident in the belief that Leon was still heartless. Even despite the way he'd helped Jami - it was all manipulation. To gain her trust. Maybe he was the one who persuaded her to leave the academy...

The thoughts were dismissed. Not now. He had more important matters at hand right now. Like entertaining this demon until it found other ways to strip at his dignity... Well, at least he'd seemed accept his strength. Probably the only strength he had. For some reason, he didn't think 'excelling at video games' counted as a particular strength. And the ability to sleep almost anywhere was just a tad useless in the field of battle. There had to be more... there had to be.

At the question, he still couldn't stop himself from tensing. Merely thinking about them disgusted him more thoroughly than anything else did. They were so horrible and vile and creepy and disturbing and--- He blinked. Oh yeah, he was trying to give the impression that he didn't have a phobia of frogs. He wasn't scared of them. The very thought of it! "I just hate them," he blabbed, hurrying even faster ahead of Leon.

The path had started to gently slope upwards by now as they neared the mountains. Owen, for some reason, had fallen pretty quiet on their journey, save for the panting that had started. His eyes were averted to the surrounding scenery, as if he were trying to ignore Leon's presence.

Someone's Luck Empty Re: Someone's Luck

Post  Leon Barner Thu Apr 05, 2012 12:34 am

Leon's mouth once again took the form of a smirk as he watched Owen try to figure how best to word his answer. When he finally spoke, Leon took a moment to think over the answer, but ultimately he just shrugged. "Fair enough." Frogs. It was pretty pathetic actually, but everything with Owen seemed to be this way. Leon saw frogs all the time at Rosewood County. They came out of Lake Jansen all the time. The children across the street often went hunting for them.

The smirk returned as Leon considered their objective again. Find a cave, find the item. "So where do you think this cave is? I usually come up here by air. Caves are harder to spot from the air. You come here in your free time? Know of any caves?"

Someone's Luck Empty Re: Someone's Luck

Owen couldn't help but breathe a shaky sigh of relief as Leon accepted his answer. He wanted to leave it at that. He was unwilling to give Leon any reasons to think that he could use frogs against him - it was intended to be an obscure, unusable weakness. Since when did frogs live on mountains anyway? Assured by his own reasoning, he slowed a little to the same pace as the other boy.

If Leon had been doing that horrible smirk behind his back, Owen certainly didn't notice it. If he looked, he was fairly certain that he would only lose control of his nerves again. "Of course," he brashly claimed. "It's just... up this path, y'know." He gestured with something of a lazy wave of his arm at the mountain before he returned to pocketing his hand. "Not far," he breathed. To be honest, he was really just taking a wild, hopeful guess. Maybe this path lead directly to a cave if he was lucky.

Though as they walked, Owen was beginning realise that his right leg was starting to get a little sore. Of course, that had been the leg to befall the accident, but it didn't make the boy any less frustrated. Why so soon...? He knew he wouldn't be able to keep the brusque pace for long. He slowed a little to a more normal speed. "Hey... why don't we take it easy for a bit...?" He shrugged. "It's.. a nice day, y'know." The sky was grey.

Someone's Luck Empty Re: Someone's Luck

Post  Leon Barner Thu Apr 05, 2012 4:17 pm

Leon didn't miss Owen's sigh of relief. Did he even try to hide it? If it hadn't been obvious that there was more to this frog business before, than it certainly was now. Secretly, Leon wondered if there were any frogs on the island. He knew there was that lake somewhere out in the mountains. Maybe there were some around there. He filed the information into the back of his mind, deciding he wouldn't use it unless he was severely provoked.

Leon stopped himself from shaking his head. Owen was still continuing with this lie? He had no idea where any cave might be. Why would he? What in the world would make this lazy child want to walk around the mountains? This time, however, Leon was going to make a point of it. On the off-chance that there actually was a cave just up the path, it would be a good safeguard. "You know, if you don't actually know then don't say anything. I'm not trying to spend forever following your 'directions' out here."

Leon's wandered up to the gray sky as Owen made reference to the "nice" weather. After registering the dismal clouds, he brought himself to make eye contact with Owen, giving him an expression that said "are you serious?". "Even it was a nice day, I highly doubt you'd want to spend it 'taking it easy' while I'm here." He paused a moment to let Owen absorb the statement. Then he sped up his walk, pulling ahead of the boy. "If you're tired, go ahead and take a break. I'll take a look up ahead." Leon didn't expect Owen to actually stop and take a break as he instructed. No, he'd want to preserve any invisible dignity he believed he still had. As to allow no objections, he summoned his wings, bending his knees a bit and pulling himself into the air. He wouldn't go far. Just up the path to find out if there really was a cave that way.

Of course Leon could see through his lie! Why did Owen try to expect anything else? But then again, if Owen could direct him somewhere far away, then he wouldn't have to deal with him - at least temporarily. Of course, the problem was that Leon wasn't actually believing him. What was so unbelievable about taking a stroll outside the grounds - save for the fact that Owen never left the castle unless he had to.

"Of course I know," he simply bit back.

Okay, so maybe it wasn't a dashingly sunny day, but Owen had deemed the detail irrelevant. But his brows did furrow slightly at Leon's comment. Well.... He had a point. He didn't really want to stretch out the time that he'd have to put up with him. He was more than ready to protest that he wasn't tired. Heck, he probably could have carried on for a bit, even with the slightly sore leg and his shortening breath. But what he didn't like was striding at a pace that was borderline jogging in an effort to keep up with Leon. However, he kept his trap clammed as Leon sailed into the air.... Peace. Sweet, momentary peace.

Taking a deep breath, Owen continued to walk at a slow, leisurely pace. He didn't need a break yet, but he was ready to savour every moment of Leon's absence.

Someone's Luck Empty Re: Someone's Luck

Post  Leon Barner Thu Apr 05, 2012 6:48 pm

Leon flew fairly low above the path once he'd gotten a fair lead over Owen. Here the path began to get more treacherous to where it required actual hiking, rather than just a leisurely stroll. No doubt, this would slow Owen down quiet a bit.

Leon landed back down on the path, bringing his wings in close around his shoulders. He looked around the area, finding nothing that resembled a cave. Not that he hadn't expected as much. He shook his head. Owen had absolutely no foresight.

Up ahead, the path thinned, deviating further into the mountains. He had to fight the urge to simply continue without Owen. With or without him though, Leon would keep his wings out. For the moment, he retracted them once more and moved to sit against a tree just off the path. He'd wait there for Owen to catch up.

Someone's Luck Empty Re: Someone's Luck

Owen continued along the path without much thought or planning ahead. Just how far was Leon planning to go ahead? He suspected that he'd probably just go and find the cave by himself, without Owen's aid (or lack of it). And he did consider once or twice consider just heading back and leaving the demon to his own devices... Nah. He'd only get a scathing tongue-lashing later.

What if there was actually a cave up there anyway? Maybe Owen could just get this whole thing over with. Although looking at the steeper, rocky terrain ahead of him... Well, needless to say, he wasn't looking forward to it. Whatever. He decided that dealing with the discomfort of it would be preferable to the endless mocking from Leon for giving up. Damn it, if only he had those wings...

He took a step up the slope, his back hunched over to get a better grip of any stones that stuck up from the ground, using them to help him climb up. What he'd give for a hiking stick right now... It took some amount of time and effort, but the boy had finally reached where Leon was waiting for him against the tree. He was panting heavily, but he would assure himself that he didn't need a break. Not yet.

But he was surprised he was waiting at all. Had he been waiting long...? Owen hadn't the incentive to count the time. But upon seeing that there was indeed no cave in sight, he could only offer a defeated sort of shrug at Leon - too breathless for words. Well, maybe he could manage two. "Guess not."

Someone's Luck Empty Re: Someone's Luck

Post  Leon Barner Fri Apr 06, 2012 1:21 pm

Leon watched as Owen approached. He was panting already. It seemed he could never offer too much proof against his already transparent lies. He raised an eyebrow at him. "Yeah, I guess not." Leon was saying this in reference to Owen's lie, rather than the lack of a cave in the area.

Leon stood, summoning his wings once more. "You'd better not hold me back, Owen." He borrowed Owen's own line from earlier. If he'd had any faith in Owen's abilities to start with, it would have just been lost.

Without waiting for Owen to respond, Leon turned to continue down the trail.

Someone's Luck Empty Re: Someone's Luck

As Leon's wings were summoned, Owen made a special note not to go anywhere near them - aware that they burned what they touched. And when he turned around, Owen mimed Leon's words under his breath, his expression wrinkling with disgust as he believed the other boy wasn't watching. Muttering expletives about the demon (which he was obviously not meant to hear), he kicked in frustration at a few small rocks around him, watching them tumble. Finally, after his mini-tantrum, he hung his head and started to follow slowly behind his partner.

Although, soon realising that his pace was too slow for the demon's more hasty one, he jogged a little to catch up. "Y'know," he started, half-wheezing. "Didn't... Didn't Blake say there'd be... bears and stuff? And snakes? I mean..." He paused for a moment to breath. "It's okay if you're too scared but... I think we should be like... careful.. And whatever..."

Awkwardly scratching the back of his head, his brown eyes peered mistrustfully at the surrounding environment.

Someone's Luck Empty Re: Someone's Luck

Leon did hear some of Owens mumblings, but wasn't able to make out what he was saying and frankly didn't care enough to try. He could feel his patience beginning to wear thin, but he resisted the urge to provoke Owen.

As Owen caught up, Leon looked at him out of the corner of his eye. He shrugged. "There probably are. If we do run into a bear or wolf, though, I'll be fine." To emphasize the point, he shook his wings out a bit. "You, on the other hand... As for snakes." He stopped walking a moment. Just long enough to pull up his pant-leg, showing that he was wearing a pair of high-tops. They weren't the best defense, but they'd do a good enough job of keeping a snake from biting him on the ankle.

Leon continued the same fast-paced walk as he'd been doing earlier. He truly didn't understand the point. Why not just go ahead and try to find the stupid cave on his own?

Someone's Luck Empty Re: Someone's Luck

Of course Leon would be fine. Leon was always fine. Leon was never worse for wear after any of his encounters. Heck, even if Owen had charged straight up to him with his biggest weakness in tow, the most damage Leon would sustain was a stupid little cut--

Oh. His mind had gotten sidetracked. Still, he'd aim a glare as Leon showed off his numerous defence capabilities. He'd subconsciously peer down to check his own shoes - old, mangled, and probably rather holey. It tended to happen if you wore the same shoes constantly for at least a year, but it wasn't like he had any other pair.

"I'll be fine," he huffed back. He hesitated a moment, before continuing. "I... I fought a bear once. As a kid... I.. stabbed its eyes out with a stick." He nodded. "Was lu... lucky to get out alive. Left a scar---" He pulled up a section of his shirt to reveal a faded scar across his midsection. Confident that that was enough proof for his heroic fight, he simply nodded, allowing the tale to sink in.

He followed Leon again, annoyed that he had to be walking so quickly... but determined not to let his annoyance show.

Leon momentarily shot Owen another "are-you-serious?" look. Seeing the scar though, he was at least a little impressed that Owen's lying seemed to be progressing past claiming the impossible, or easily disproved. The scar could have come from anywhere though. Leon's doubtful look quickly vanished, however, dissolving, once more, into a smirk.

"Good. I guess that means, you're fully prepared to face another, and I won't have to stick my neck out for you should we come across one?" Owen's tactlessness would never fade, no matter how much he improved his ability to lie. He'd let this one go, though, since Owen did offer something to prove it. Maybe he was learning.

Someone's Luck Empty Re: Someone's Luck

Owen only frowned seriously at Leon's skeptical look, not wanting to give him a reason to doubt him. The stuff about bears had all been hogwash of course, but it was difficult to fake a scar like that. Either way, he'd endured something.

Owen nodded in response to Leon, but he almost looked unsure about it. Although it seemed like he was believing him, Owen realised that if something actually did come out and attack them, then Leon probably wasn't going to help him. He certainly wouldn't want to admit it, but he probably would need his help if something did attack.

But didn't he have his powers of communication? He could ask them to go away. He'd never supposed that wild animals were at all obedient, but the possibility was there. He'd tried it on farm animals before - most of them would just mindlessly follow orders that they could understand.

"Well, yeah," he shrugged. "I'm pretty good wi--" There was a reason for Owen's sudden stop. His eyes left the other boy and was staring at something on the path before them. A snake. A large snake, draped over the entire width of the path, completely still and unmoving. It was difficult to see at first, being the same colour as the muddied path, but it was definitely there.

A shivering hand reached out and pointed to it wordlessly.

Someone's Luck Empty Re: Someone's Luck

Leon wasn't sure if the frown was meant to make his statement anymore believable. If that was the purpose behind it, it certainly didn't work. Owen's nod was met with a rolling of Leon's eyes. Proactive wasn't a word in Owen's vocabulary. If something attacked, he would need all the help he could get to get out alive. That wasn't a good thing for Leon.

Leon shook his head, ignoring Owen's interrupted sentence. "Well, if we do see a bear just don't freak out. I'm not trying to get mauled because of you." He followed Owen's finger with his eyes, catching sight of the huge snake on the path. "That's a big-ass snake." Simply to state the obvious.

Of course, the solution for him was a simple one: just fly over it. The option, however, wasn't quite available to Owen. He supposed he could drop a phase under it, but frankly the snake hadn't done anything to deserve falling through the stone to whatever lay underneath it. This was the snake's territory, after all. Kicking it off the path would have been like some random hiker kicking him out of his cliffs at Rosewood County. That would never happen.

Leon made a big show of looking back to Owen. "Well, I know how I'm getting around it." He raised his wings a bit, giving Owen the obvious clue to what he meant in case he still hadn't gathered the intelligence to figure it out himself. "What are you going to do?"
