An Unintentional Confrontation (Everly and Kale) Empty An Unintentional Confrontation (Everly and Kale)

So much had happened today, but the headmistress was starting to feel a bit better about all of it. At least she had finally taken steps to gain the upper hand. Still, she was tired and didn't want to see any more people until after she had had a good night's rest. In an effort to avoid confrontation, she had sat herself in an old, wood trimmed chair on the third floor of the library. It was small and dark, and unlikely that anyone should happen on her.

This particular section was filled with older copies of books, ones that Charles had cherished. Other than that, there was no real order or organization as there was in the rest of the library. After perusing the many books, running her fingers over the ancient spines, she settles on Celestina by Charlotte Smith. Everly remembered when Charles had brought this one back from one of his trips to the mainland, telling her how everyone was so crazy over this book and this new, female author. Every time Everly read the book, she felt both appalled and fascinated. The french revolution was something she only heard about through books like these. Even at the time, it felt as if it was happening in another world. And if she remembered correctly, which she did, it was the last book Charles had brought home before he died.

She turned the pages carefully, not really reading as much as remembering. And it was so engrossed that she sat, hoping to escape reality for a while at least.

An Unintentional Confrontation (Everly and Kale) Empty Re: An Unintentional Confrontation (Everly and Kale)

Smug confidence. That was what the harpy felt as she strode down the halls. Her wings were pleasantly exercised, having flown to the mountain and back. Everything was as it should be and nothing was amiss. The intruder was dead, his blood still decorating her front, drying and cracking on her skin and still seeped into her shirt. Oh yes, the cloth would most likely have to be disposed of. Not many shirts, from experience, were able to be saved after full frontal atrial spray. She still giggled about it even know, the way his muscles had shredded and how the hot red solution of cells and plasma had gotten everywhere. There was a sick humor in it she found that pleased her.

It was in this state of self-assured victory that she took the time to enjoy the long walk to her room rather than fly. Her hips rolled and swayed with her attitude as her hand trailed along the railing with her confident elegance as she ascended the stairs in the back of the library, up towards the ladder that lead to the trap door to her room. This was the third floor, a place she had not really looked through, to be honest. Kale glanced around at the dust covered bindings. She had an appreciation for literature, yes, but she did not often take the time to sit and read novels, finding herself too preoccupied in what she found mattered in practical life: nonfiction and science.

Lightly, she weaved her way through the cases, eye like night guiding her through the dark sections. It was in such a way she spied the Headmistress upon the chair, hidden away. Raising an eyebrow and shaking her head slightly, she leaned against the shelves, wings draping out casually and arms crossing. Glancing over the other woman's form, a slightly amused expression light her face.

"Wistful, as always." The statement was quiet and as soft as her tone ever was, but in the silence of the books, the harpy's voice rang clear.

The book slammed shut. Everly's eyes were wide at first, revealing the startle that she felt, but they soon narrowed as her eyes travelled over the harpy's blood stained clothes. The headmistress herself had found the time to shower and change clothes. She was now wearing a long, simple white dress made of light cotton. Still presentable, but also comfortable since she had planned on spending the evening out of sight. So where had the harpy been that she had been unable or unwilling to clean herself? The sight brought Everly's mind back to the exact place she had been trying to escape.

"I see you haven't found the time to wash up," she said in a very matter of fact tone. She stood up, clasping the closed book in her hand. The change of position was not out of manners, but out of a desire to be in a more defendable position. She shifted uncomfortably, her eyes glanced up as if searching for something polite to say.

"I didn't think you came to your quarters this way. It was not my intention to seek you out." She wanted to make this point very clear.

An Unintentional Confrontation (Everly and Kale) Empty Re: An Unintentional Confrontation (Everly and Kale)

The corner of light tinted red lips pulled up at the corners, parting just the slightest to show some white of teeth underneath, as ebony eye narrowed just as the other woman's had. Kale pushed off the bookcase, arms dropping, and strolled forward a step. She did not bother looking down at the expanse of exposed creamy white skin splattered with red-turning-brown. She knew what her appearance was of, and honestly, this was the truest to her own nature as she had ever been standing before the headmistress. Her chin tilted up and it was clear that she minded not the gore or the blatant show of her less than socially acceptable actions. In fact, her attitude spoke that she was even putting a bit of pride in to it. To her, this was her capable of protecting her own interests, this was proof on an undeniable level.

"I have not. You had...been overwhelmed by the situation." With the way her head was angled, it appeared that despite the height difference and being shorter, she was looking down on the taller woman. Her tone spoke of it being oh such a pity, poor little Everly couldn't handle the harsh cruel reality. "When I left, as I stated, I took it upon myself to check on something and attempt to make the situation a little better, as I thought it would be as my responsibility as a Dean and as being more connected to the intruder than the rest. I am dependable, after all." Her smirk stretched a little farther at the prospect. She did not try to hide from the woman that that was a lie. She turned her hand over in the air and inclined her head.

"I was not seeking you either, I just happened to take my time walking today rather than fly." She paused and then strode forward, eye trailing over the woman and taking in the uneasy posture. She flipped a hand to gesture a suggestion that the woman could return to her seat and not stand on her account before casually taking up the partner chair of the same design on the other side of the small, simple, round book table between them. Thin legs crossed and feathers parted over the arms of the chair as her wings settled to the side, leaning back. Her tail feathers were smoothed under her as she lowered, much like one would when wearing a nice skirt they do not wish to wrinkle. Her posture, while still casual and without care, was surprisingly gentle and friendly. As she unburdened her limbs, she sighed and let her head fall back just slightly, eye closing. It was a falsely unguarded position for those who might believe the harpy was ever off her guard.

An Unintentional Confrontation (Everly and Kale) Empty Re: An Unintentional Confrontation (Everly and Kale)

When Kale first stepped forward, Everly instinctively tried to back up, but found her way blocked by the chair that she had been sitting in. The wood hit her legs and she fumbled awkwardly before regaining her composure and clearing her throat as if nothing had happened. As the harpy claimed that she was dependable the headmistress' mouth tightened, but she made no move to comment.

Still, she couldn't figure out why Kale would stay to chat with her rather than continue on her way. Everly was in no mood for conversation, especially with someone who it was becoming increasingly difficult to be polite to. The headmistress took a sharp inhale of breath as she watched Kale take her seat, the blood-stained clothes and skin pressing against the wood. Everly closed her eyes for a few seconds longer than a normal blink, trying to calm the out of control feeling that such sights always gave her. After she opened her eyes again, she stood, hesitating. If she were to sit as well, it would be a sign that she was welcoming the company, which was not at all how she felt. The internal battle was short-lived, however, and propriety won, as it too often did.

Everly sat down. "Overwhelmed is an understatement," she said, referring to one of Kale's earlier comments. She immediately regretted saying it. The day's earlier events were not something that she wished to revisit in discussion. "But please. Don't let me keep you. I'm sure you want to get washed up as soon as possible." The book was now on her lap, the binding clutched under her white-knuckled grasp.

An Unintentional Confrontation (Everly and Kale) Empty Re: An Unintentional Confrontation (Everly and Kale)

Post  Kale Mon Feb 06, 2012 10:03 pm

Tuned in to the woman's reactions as she was, Kale couldn't help the smirk that pulled at the corner of her lips. That short, sharp intake of breath was really what she strove for. Oh how she loved pushing the fussy woman's buttons, and it seemed she could do it all too well, too. She wanted to cackle, but gave no other reactions as she waited for Everly to either accept her company, leave, or ask her to leave. The last of which she really doubted, it was too rude for the Headmistress to do even to her. That was another kick. No matter how vile she was to the woman, Everly was bound by these pointless senses of elegance and proper manners to still remain a pleasant outwardly disposition towards her. It was something she enjoyed exploiting immensely. But, back to the options, the second of which seemed just as likely as the first, and so the harpy was somewhat surprised as she heard the material of the chair give to the weight as Everly returned to her seat rather than excuse herself to run away again.

Kale let the smile spread, lips parting to show white teeth underneath, at the other woman's comment. A light scoffed escaped her.

"Well, I do hope you are feeling better. It was a shock, I imagine, but well, it's over and done with now, yes?" She hummed, pleased with herself. The harpy opened the one eye she was able and lifted her head to glance at Everly before down at her own relaxed form, as if just remembering the gore covering her front. She shrugged and flipped a hand, leaning her head back again as if she were just too comfortable to be bothered at the moment to get up to go clean.

"Actually, no, I'm not bothered by it at all. This is not the first time, nor shall it be the last, I'm sure." She sighed in an offhanded, flippant tone that may as well have said 'Oh well. What are you going to do?'. "Blood is so very difficult to get out of cloth, besides, I find that after awhile, rushing to wash it away is rather pointless when it's just going to re-accumulate sometime later, don't you agree?" Again, the harpy's tone was so conversational, it was almost as if they could have been two simple human housewives gossiping over how grass stains in your son's white sports team uniform were so difficult to remove. The smile persisted on Kale's face, knowing that the other woman would not agree...

An Unintentional Confrontation (Everly and Kale) Empty Re: An Unintentional Confrontation (Everly and Kale)

Post  Everly Fri Feb 10, 2012 11:39 am

"I am feeling better now, thank you." She said it as convincingly as she could muster, but her static, unsmiling face argued otherwise. She listened to Kale spiel with growing distaste. Somewhere there, on the edge of the harpy's words, seemed to be a threat. Everly wasn't sure if it was a threat to herself or to people in general, but it was there and it made her uncomfortable. Either way, in Kale's few short statements, it was clear that she had been covered in blood before and she would be again. And with that realization, the situation became suddenly worse than it had been, something Everly had not realized was possible.

Her insides sank, and she felt the need to run to someone, anyone that she could reveal this new information to. If she didn't, she couldn't imagine what would happen. Or she could confront Kale, here and now. Tell her that she wasn't welcome here anymore. But she remained indecisive. It was possible that confronting Kale would just make it worse. In the end, Everly did nothing because she was afraid. Not of Kale herself, exactly, but of making the wrong decision.

So instead she merely tightened her lips and took a long blink. When her eyes opened she smiled tightly and shrugged. "I threw my dress away. It is hardly usual for my clothing to become covered in blood. I don't expect it will happen again anytime soon-- or ever for that matter."

She cleared her throat and reopened her book on her lap. It wasn't the page that she had been on, but that didn't matter because she wasn't really reading. It was possible though, that if she made herself appear busy the harpy would get bored and leave her alone. At least for now.

An Unintentional Confrontation (Everly and Kale) Empty Re: An Unintentional Confrontation (Everly and Kale)

Post  Kale Fri Feb 10, 2012 12:08 pm

The harpy hummed passively.

"That's good." It was obvious, though, that she didn't actually care, and there was no feeling behind the words. She remained in her seat, unaware of most of Everly's inner turmoil. She had not particularly meant to threaten the woman. Though she did assume that in later years she would be just as blood soaked as she had been through all the previous years of her life so far, but as far as she knew, it could be after this whole school mess was done with. As it was, she planned that a year, maybe two, was all she needed. Just enough time for...she sighed, trying to ease the weight on her chest slightly. This was not the right moment to be thinking on such things. Everything was fine. She had just checked. Everything was in its place and as it should be. When the Headmistress spoke again, Kale was actually grateful, for it pulled her from her thoughts in to lighter -for her - conversation.

"Mm, I shall probably have to dispose of this shirt as well. Luckily, my clothes are not so fancy as your own." She chuckled. "And you can't rightly say that. I'm sure before this day you would have said such a thing would never have happened. You never know, do you? Perhaps you should take my lead and wear something with less material to sully." Of course she was kidding, as she really didn't mean anything by the statement, though she did firmly believe in never ruling out any possible outcomes until thoroughly proven and with evidence against them. It was the scientist in her. If she ruled out things too soon, well, that would be very close-minded and would be a great way to never discover the actual truth. She fell into silence as she heard the book rustle as it opened. But otherwise, the woman's stillness was particularly silent. It was odd, actually, knowing you had company and not hearing their heart.

It was too quiet, really, and Kale found herself opening her eye and turning her head to get the Headmistress in her sights. Rather passively, she stared, and having nothing else to occupy herself, she took to studying Everly. So proper and so fragile. However, there was a particular strength, though she assumed it to be an illusion, just like everything else seemed to be with this woman. The harpy wondered what made her act the way she did.

An Unintentional Confrontation (Everly and Kale) Empty Re: An Unintentional Confrontation (Everly and Kale)

Post  Everly Fri Feb 10, 2012 12:34 pm

Without lifting her attention from her book, the headmistress nodded and hummed lightly, as if she agreed with whatever statement Kale had made about her clothes and outfit, or whatever. She was sure that she didn't agree, but nodding seemed like the best option at the moment: the best way to avoid whatever confrontation might come from it. But then, she didn't leave. She just sat there, staring at her, and since Everly couldn't bring herself to actually read, she felt the weight of each second.

She looked up abruptly, meeting the harpy's cold gaze. "Do you need something more?" Her voice was pleasant enough, but there was a hint of harsh annoyance that she immediately regretted. Why couldn't she just have kept up the pretense of reading and left it at that? There wasn't something about the harpy that continually made her snap. Without fail, Kale would always say something or do something that made Everly act against what she knew was right and proper. And the worst part was, it didn't seem as if Kale was even trying.

While she thought, Everly attempted to keep up a strong front. She raised her eyebrows and the corner of her mouth twitched in an attempted smile. Hopefully she could muster up a nice enough facial expression that Kale wouldn't notice the momentary lapse, and she would simply realize that she was intruding and leave, like any normal, proper human being should. Then it hit Everly-- human was the point at which Kale was lacking. But then, she guessed that she was too--

The headmistress struggled to keep up the facial facade.

An Unintentional Confrontation (Everly and Kale) Empty Re: An Unintentional Confrontation (Everly and Kale)

Post  Kale Sun Feb 26, 2012 2:08 pm

Kale's large ebony eye blinked as if in surprise as Everly's head snapped up and a quick question delivered. The harsh tone did not slip past the harpy's notice, but she brushed it off, used to such hostilities being delivered towards her poorly concealed. Still, perhaps she could use this. The headmistress seemed to hate being uncontrolled and imperfect, even in this.

Eyebrows lowering and corners of her lips turning just the slightest downwards, Kale looked away as if marginally offended.

"'Needed', no." She left it open, as if perhaps while she didn't need something, she just might have wanted something. Something, which, it seemed, might have been denied to her by the lack of their ability to be friendly. She gave a short sigh. "Very well, I do believe it is clear that all I am achieving is ruining your evening, which, despite what you may think of me, was not in my intention." With brows creased slightly, seeming more irritated at herself for this 'mishap' than at Everly, the woman made to stand, pushing herself up, feathers rustling. Kale turned to face Everly and inclined her head.

"I apologize." It was curt, all air of being saddened by being obviously unwelcomed. Of course, Kale neither cared or expected any different. This act was merely for the benefit of one of two possible outcomes. One was that she would leave and Everly would feel poorly, thinking it her fault for her lack of hospitality. The other was that the headmistress would feel obligated to call her back and apologize, trying honestly to right what she felt needed to be righted. Or, perhaps there was a third, where the other woman would simply let her leave and be relieved. In which case, Kale would learn something rather interesting about her that she had not expected.

An Unintentional Confrontation (Everly and Kale) Empty Re: An Unintentional Confrontation (Everly and Kale)

Had she actually offended the harpy? Surprisingly, Everly's first response was to be pleased with herself-- a feeling which immediately turned to shame. She had always been taught to be kind and proper, no matter what her personal feelings were towards any individual. It was possible that the dean was bluffing, but then there was the possibility that she was genuine--

As much as Everly wanted, so desperately, to let the dean just walk away and be done with it-- her training wouldn't allow her to do so. Her internal struggle showed through a twitch of the lips, tightening and loosening depending on whether or not she intended to speak.

"Please--" she said finally, her voice taught. "Sit. If there is something that you wish to talk about, I won't be the one to chase you away." She closed her book again and placed it on the table to show that Kale now had her full attention. The headmistress folded her hands and placed them on her lap. Her back was straight, shoulders relaxed and chin aiming ever-so-slightly upwards as she waited for the harpy to speak. She only hoped that she wasn't about to waste her own time.

So, the second option won. Kale couldn't help but smile, though she dashed it away as she turned to look over her shoulder back at the headmistress as though surprised. She eyed the closed book with perhaps a small amount of distrust.

"Why?" She finally asked, and did not move to sit back down. "It seems bluntly understood that we hold no love for each other. I am under no illusion that you would be sad to see me go from you for the last time." The harpy was blunt and to the point, no elegant pretense of being friends. "It seems we are unable to tolerate each other. I see no reason why you would not turn me away even if I did have something of import to converse about with you and this is your opportunity to do so." She tilted her head as if to ask why Everly was not taking it.
