Savoring in Spades

Post  Audi on Sat May 26, 2012 3:08 pm

She had found heaven. She was sure.

Most people don't even realize how much one's nose has to do with how they perceive the flavor of food. Many popular meals lose much of their appeal when you can enjoy them only through your taste buds. Some edibles go as far as seeming bland to a person with anosmia - which was what Audi was.

But this was not the case with the plants in the little holy sanctuary. What was its original purpose, Audi didn't know - but for all that she cared, it was put there for her own personal enjoyment. She was making her way through the rows of soft, tilled soil, leaving a track of her characteristic five-toed paw-prints. The flavor of most of those herbs was strong enough to make up for her lack of olfactory perception and she was making the most of it - plucking out whole plants and stuffing them into her mouth, rolling her eyes with pleasure as she chewed them up and their taste flooded her tongue.

So absorbed she was in the delightful greenery, she did not pay much heed to the rest of what was in the garden... or the weather... or the fact that behind her a path of destruction grew ever longer, scattered with roots and other inedible plant parts that she had spit out.

Haggis frowned, pale hand still wrapped around the woven wicker basket he had brought along for his weekly excursion into the gardens. They had started as a few spontaneous visits, absently plucking fruit from a tree or a few special spices and herbs from the ground. Eventually he began visiting regularly, checking on the cycles, growth, and development of all the vegetation and harvesting specific ones when they were at their peak to concoct dazzling remedies and healing beverages.

Yet when he arrived that particular afternoon, he saw that parts of his lovely garden has been slightly marred, at least he had claimed it to be his at this point. In silence of course, and not of actual will to announce such a statement to most of the campus. Still, it confused as to where and how the carnage had occurred. Bending over, he placed the wicker basket to his side and allowed a hand to run over the up-heaved roots and small clumps of herbs. He tugged a blade of Oregano from the ground with a gentle pluck, as not to damage or disturb the roots under the warm soil of the earth. Placing it near his nose, Haggis breathed in the wonderful, invigorating scent that made his heart flutter. Placing it in his mouth and chewing absently, he quickly went back to examining the area of assault.

Prints of some kind were scattered amongst the greenery, leading in a pattern that the goat demon followed with skillful green eyes. They settled upon a creature, a student that Haggis had spied occasionally through the corridors and dining halls of the castle they called campus. Picking up his basket, he scooted closer to the student, his ears bent slightly underneath his long hair, part of which was tied in a lazy, hap-hazard ponytail of some sorts. Pieces were still left hanging around his face and neck by numerous amounts.

"...Um..." He began in a murmur, basket held close to his chest, more as a comforting feeling than anything else. He couldn't think of what to say, how to talk before the slightly shorter creature whose name remained a mystery to him. Haggis was torn between remaining silent until noticed or piping up about marring the delicate rows of herbs in the garden he cared for. "...Excuse me." He managed out again, tail flicking nervously back and forth behind him as he took a short step back, mind and voice receding into their shy and tentative shell, leaving a hollowed and nervous-looking young goat demon in their wake to shakily stand amongst the green vegetation and muddy soil.

Audi wasn't a shy person. Far from it. However, the year - or two, or three - that she had spend out in the street taught her that humans in groups are something to be avoided. And so, when she passed through the crowded corridors of the school, her right side was glued to the wall and her gaze to the floor. That didn't help her meet people, and when the two quiet words pulled her out of the herb-induced trance, she did not recognize the voice or its source. She turned around midair in a swift jump and tilted her head as she saw the boy, small bits of greenery clinging to her whiskers.

Audi's gaze flickered over him as she took in his features, standing perfectly still. He was a weird creature. Flat face and bald skin like a human, and the ears and tail of a non-human. Which category to sort him into?

Finally, coming to no conclusions, Audi shrugged carelessly. It didn't matter, she supposed. What mattered was getting to share her joy. Her ears perked up as she smiled, then quickly bent over and plucked out a random plant, roots and all. She lightly pranced over to the boy and offered it to him on an outstretched palm. Surely he would love it as well.

Haggis felt a slight pang in his heart as she plucked the lovely herb from its roots. He would have felt a little less sad if she had, perhaps, gently cut it or removed the leaves from the surface of the plant, so that it might perhaps bud again in the spring or summer. Yanking it up from it's roots, however, nearly made him faint. Now that lovely plant would never get a chance to grow again. Still, out of politeness, Haggis leaned forward and took the plant from the creature with a shaky smile.

"Oh, th-thank-you..." He murmured quietly, twirling the leaf in his hand for a moment. They were basil leaves, small and almost full grown. They wold have been harvested that day, anyways. The fragrance of the vegetation overwhelmed the boy's sensory organs. They made his mouth water and his tail flick. After a moment of contemplation, he figured that it would not harm the herb considering it was already uprooted, and popped the leaves into his mouth. The taste of basil exploded onto Haggis' tongue in a matter of seconds, and a small smile graced his lips. as he savored the firework of flavor that graced his mouth.

Facing the shorter creature again, he offered her that same smile and reached up to absently fiddle with a piece of his long hair. "Thank-you..." He murmured quietly, "However...um...could you not pull the plants by their roots. I mean, um...It sort of kills them and I need them to grow again next year..." Even at such a miniscule comment, Haggis could still feel his face heat up with embarrassment. He was by no means aggressive, and even that slight demand had made him feel to pushy. Goodness, he made a mental note to at least try and stop stuttering during his sentences, and his eyes began to nervously stare at the ground once again.

If Audi's smile got even wider, her face would split in two. He did like it! How delightful!

Audi, being a proud member of her species, didn't care much for talking. Ratpeople used sounds - squeaks, hisses, grumbles - to convey emotion, rather than meaning, and so when Haggis spoke, she simply regarded his mumble as an expression of uncertainty and self-consciousness. She needed to reassure him - yes, she loved the plants, but she didn't mind sharing them, if he enjoyed them as much as she did. Uttering a content hum, she reached down to rip out another plant and stuff it into Haggis' hand whether or not he'd accept it. She then folded her arms behind her back and stood in front of him, observing him curiously, smile never leaving her face.

The question of whether he was a human or not still bugged her from somewhere at the back of her mind, though. He was very human-like, definitely, and after all she had seen some humans with tails already... But she couldn't gather enough courage to try and examine professor Odqura, so... this red-haired boy seemed a better subject.

With a playful glint in her eye, Audi leaped behind Haggis to tug on his tail gently and see if it wasn't fake and won't come off.

Haggis frowned as he observed her pulling out yet another one of his precious herbs from its roots. That made about a couple dozen he would have to replant later that week. He stared down at the plant in his hand for a long moment, blushing when his stomach emitted an impatient growl. He put the matter aside for the time being, resolving to arise earlier in the days to come and work on replanting all of the greenery that was now lost. Perhaps he would also invest some time and paint into making signs, at least one that read 'please do not pull from roots'. As he thought of the idea, Haggis pressed a leaf against his mouth before allowing himself to take a small nibble, savoring the leaves instead of shoving all of them into his mouth as he had done before.

A surprised, goat-like bleat escaped the boy's mouth when he felt the tug on his tail. Ears pressing further into his head and his tail instinctively swishing to get out of the grip. Reaching back, Haggis gripped his tail protectively for a moment and turned to face Audi again. His green eyes were wide with surprise, his mouth forming a small 'o'. He hadn't expected to have his tail tugged that day. Once or twice someone would go for his horns, just to see if they were really part of his scalp (which they were thank-you very much) and he could handle that with absolutely no problem. Rare was it that anyone decided to experiment with his anterior anatomy.

"Oh, um, yes, well." He stuttered to find the right form of speech, slowly releasing his tail so that it might begin to swish back and forth again. It was like the bones had minds of their own down there. "Yes, tail. Goat tail!" He managed out at last, placing the herb once again to his mouth and nibbling on it nervously. Haggis peered backwards to get a look at his tail. Seldom did he realize it was there, but now that someone had touched it, it seemed to be the only body part his mind could bear to focus on. "That's attached to me. I hope. I know. Er, yes." He smiled at Audi sheepishly, "Oh, um also...Your name? M-May I know your name?"

The goat boy figured that, if he was going to ask for someone's name it was only polite of him to give his in exchange. With another quick flick of his tail, he introduced himself.

"I'm Haggis."

Her experiment successful, Audi let go of his tail without protest. So it was an actual tail! How curious. And it had fur, while the rest of him didn't... Apart from... Her eyes were now fixated on his intriguing ears, along with the horns. Having ascertained that his tail was real, she had no doubt that the parts adorning his head were real as well, but that didn't make her want of touching them any smaller. She bent her arms at the elbows to hold her hands in front of her stomach in a decidedly rodent-like way as she craned her neck in hopes of getting a better look. Unfortunately he was a bit too tall.

As preoccupied as she was with the examination, some part of her brain was trained to register the word 'name', even if it was surrounded by a dozen others she didn't care about. People asked for her name often at the Academy; in a way it was nice, like she actually was a human or something else that mattered, but on the other side it just got tedious. Who needed names? Still, she automatically answered in her ever-so-slightly raspy, but sweet and feminine voice.
"Audi."
His name, however, was lost on her completely.

All of a sudden, she blinked, as if remembering where she was, then quickly snatched another plant out of the soil and packed it into her mouth. Her jaw mowed monotonously as she proceeded to stare at Haggis again in contemplation. Why would a human have a furry tail and ears, and horns? She did, more-or-less, understand the concept of the Island as a refuge for magical creatures, but there were just so many of them it blew her mind. Why?

"Why?" she repeated aloud, gesturing vaguely towards Haggis' bottom. 'Why do you have/need a tail and why are you here?' would be the full question... if she was the kind to use so many words at once.

Re: Savoring in Spades

Audi. The name was simple, and Haggis liked it. His green eyes watched Audi as she picked yet another piece of herbs and put it into her mouth. He finally decided to leave it alone, kneeling down onto his knees and pulling out a small pair of scissors. His fingers gently wrapped around a leaf or two of the nearest herb that was budding and pulled it up gently. The stem stuck up straight and vulnerable. He pursed his lips when he heard the question from her lips. The simple one word question that made his heart skip in panic as he realized that he did not really understand what she was asking.

Why what?

Haggis thought through the conversation they had had together, not a long one but one that could possibly raise a few questions. He thought quietly to himself, not uttering a word for the longest of times as his mind searched its library for a response that might provoke a question. All the meanwhile, he took the scissors in his hands and slowly, gently cut the leaves from the stem. He did his best not to graze or harm the main, thick stem that supplied the nutrients to all of the plants. He only took the leaves, plucking them off before placing them in his basket and reaching over for the next one, his tail flicking back and forth.

Oh, tail. Maybe that was it. When Haggis had been alone, the tail had raised quite a few suspicions for people as well, but unlike the cities and towns he had always avoided and hid from, here his response would merit no surprise looks. "Oh, um," The boy mumbled as he continued to tenderly harvest the leaves of herbs into his wicker basket, "Because I'm a goat. Well, goat demon. Demon that's a goat." He frowned, trying to find the best way to explain it, "I can turn into a full goat, but most of the time I'm only half goat, like this...Goat." He finally settled on the one word, laughing at himself quietly before busily sheering some more herbs, careful to keep each different one in separate sections within the basket.

She watched him attentively as she waited, his actions a complete mystery. So, he took only the leaves... why would he do that? Surely, it simply meant that he was picky. Audi tutted under her breath. Honestly, humans! Well, if he was too good to eat the stems and remaining leaves as well, she would have to finish the job for him. As he left a plant and moved on to the next one, she promptly pulled out and devoured the one he'd harvested from. Chewing, she watched the boy fuss around with the greenery as she sat down in the middle of the herb bed, ankles crossed on top of each other. The weather was actually quite nice, she noted. The sun's rays were warm, but not too hot, and bees buzzed around in the still air. There was no breeze, but the midday heat had already dissipated. Smiling, the ratgirl closed her eyes and turned her head towards the sun.

It took Haggis so long to think of an answer, she had almost completely forgotten she'd asked a question. It wasn't like her taking initiative in conversation happened often. She blinked her eyes open, and mostly out of the surprise, actually paid attention to what he was saying. Goat. Sort of like she was a rat, but not exactly. That made sense. She rubbed her eyes lazily and rose to her feet to catch up with consuming the remains of the plants that Haggis so thoughtlessly left behind.

Haggis sighed as he heard the root of the plant he had just harvested being tugged out from its earthy home. He was lucky for two things at this particular moment. One, that herbs grew back when he re-planted the seeds he had gathered earlier in the year. And two, he was very, very patient. Placing the basket to the side for a moment, Haggis, re-adjusted the scissors in his hands and turned to face Audi, smiling. With a light tilt of his head and a movement of his free hand, he beckoned the nearby student closer towards him. The metal objects in his hand gleamed brightly as they caught the sun for a brief second.

"Try this," He suggested softly, pulling the leaf out as he had done earlier, "This way, you still get to eat them, and more grow the next time." With a quick snip Haggis cut off a few of the leaves at once and offered them to Audi. Taking care to make sure the scissors were closed, Haggis used his hand to brush back the hair that was hanging heavy around his cheeks and forehead. Though, he also eyed the plants in his hand. They were a form of herb he had only ever found growing on this island, and had failed to find a name for yet. All the goat-demon knew was that they tasted absolutely divine. He couldn't help but pluck a few from his hand and place them in his mouth, savoring in the sweet, delicious taste the grass immersed his mouth in.

As she chewed contently on the stem and roots of one plant or another, she noticed Haggis beckoning to her, and her ears perked up with curiosity. Quickly she trotted over to him to watch his demonstration, her mouth forming an 'o' out of surprise. Growing more? How smart! She stole a quick guilty glance over her shoulder at the rather ruinous landscape she left in her wake. Now that she thought about it, it seemed pretty obvious... such was life.

She swallowed the plants currently in her mouth, wiped her face with the top of her hand, then reached to snatch the leaves out of Haggis' grasp. Smiling up at him as 'thanks', she proceeded to eat them. All flavors of the herbs around there were new to her, but this one was something special even compared to those. It stood out just by the virtue of being sweet, while the others had distinctive, but definitely... herb-ish flavors. Audi smacked her lips contently, glanced at Haggis to make sure she had his attention, then leaned down to pluck just the leaves of another plant of the same type.
As she chewed on those, she turned her head to look at the plots again. Now that she'd noticed the ruin that she'd caused, she actually started paying attention to the surroundings, and it made her wonder...

"What's this for?" she asked, waving her arms in a gesture loosely pointing to the whole of the garden.

Re: Savoring in Spades

Post  Haggis on Sun Oct 07, 2012 4:08 pm

Haggis couldn't help but allow a mild sigh of relief to escape past his lips. The garden was safe, and that was a relief. Though, upon Audi's question, the goat demon couldn't help but take a moment to think himself. Looking around, he allowed himself to take in the sight of the garden. He honestly had never looked at it all at once, when he came here he was always too busy picking herbs or sneaking a few bites of delicious vegetables from the neighboring garden. As he took his time, however, Haggis couldn't help but think how amazing it was. Everything was so green, and littered amongst the color was small flowers that bloomed with certain herbs. Trees provided ample shade in certain areas, all while growing rather delicious looking fruits. The air around them smelt heavily of the herbs that had just recently been picked.

"Well," Haggis hummed thoughtfully as he leaned down again and began cutting the plant's leaves, "Herbs are used for cooking? I guess to make the food taste good, mostly...and...Well, it is very pretty." He smiled at Audi, "Maybe because it looks good?" He placed the herbs in his basket and moved to the side to grab others, "And for people like us? ...Wh-Who like to eat them, I mean." He laughed nervously, rather displeased with his silly, non-very-good explanation skills. "I don't know," He shrugged, "But I don't think I want it to disappear any time soon, do you?"

Haggis stood up suddenly, taking his basket with him and moving down a few rows to new herbs. He took a quick sniff of the ones he had already gathered and sighed in contentment, placing the basket down again before going back to his previous job of cutting herbs. "Um...if you want to help..." He mumbled over to Audi, rather unsure of what to say to make the silence he was sure would ensue less...well...silent, "they can...go in here." He pointed to his basket with a nervous smile before blurting out quickly, "Um only if you want to though I mean."

While Haggis seemed to be occupied with looking around the garden, Audi's attention remained on him as she stood up straight, her hands resting on her stomach. She'd asked a question and zoned out once before, and she didn't want it to happen again. Clearly, the boy was a fountain of knowledge, and she wouldn't be missing any of it.

When he finally started speaking, her ears perked up and she listened attentively, seemingly nonplussed by how unsure he was. So... the place did not serve any special purpose... Audi wasn't sure if she was more disappointed that there was no mystery, or relieved that she did not trespass into and ruin something important.

She shook her head energetically in response. It was an amazing place still, and no, she did not want it to disappear. And so, when she was offered an opportunity to help and appease her guilt, she jumped on it, uttering a happy squeak. With no further ado, she knelt down and started gently, but quickly and deftly plucking the leaves off the plants with one hand, then holding them in the other. Once she got started with some task or another, the world disappeared to the ratgirl, and when she stood up and turned around to drop the big handful of leaves into Haggis' basket, her movements were rigid and automated and eyes focused and glazed over with determination. She emptied her hand into the basket, then turned away again to continue working.

Re: Savoring in Spades

Post  Haggis on Thu Oct 11, 2012 5:50 pm

And slowly the garden fell back into silence, but unlike the ones previous to it this silence was neither uncomfortable or awkward. It was a silence that allowed time for thought, and Haggis readily took that opportunity the moment it presented itself. The wind rustled the plants gently, sending a few loose leaves flying in the breeze. Haggis watched out of the corner of his eye as Audi joined him in gathering herbs. Later, he would need to take all of these to the kitchen and began organizing them according to type, and which ones were for cooking and which ones were for medicine. It was a pain-stakingly long task, when he was all alone, but it gave him a chance to sit alone with his thoughts.

For now, he focused on the matter at hand. They had lost of the garden left, and hadn't finished picking even half of it. Not that Haggis ever did, but with two people doing the work he was sure to be done with his normal amount faster than usual. Haggis decided to go over and cut some of the thicker vegetation growing around the middle of the garden. They had seemed to grow more resistant to his cutting then the ones on the perimeter, and took most of his day to cut. Angling the scissors properly, Haggis began to cut one of the thicker-stemmed leaves from the herb plant. He frowned as he went as slowly as he could, but even some of his more forceful movements failed to cut the plant.

"Oh for goodness sakes." He huffed quietly, stretching the leaf out and angling his fingers again. With as much strength as the goat-demon could muster, he cut the small piece off of the plant. The scissors went clean through the stubborn stem. Though, shortly afterwards, Haggis felt a sharp stinging sensation in his finger. With a surprised yelp he dropped his scissors and cradled his finger, watching as blood began to ooze from a rather deep cut on his pointer finger. Immediately he put the bloody cut into his mouth, frowning in disgust at the unpleasant taste of coppery blood that touched his taste buds. The leaf he had cut fell into the dirt as if it had done nothing wrong.

When she worked, Audi found her consciousness slipping to some small, neat room somewhere in a dark corner of her mind. She registered the surroundings, the quiet whispering of leaves, the pleasant breeze brushing through her fur, but her movements seemed completely automated as she harvested and plucked and gathered. It seemed to be a trait of the ratpeople in general, a trait which helped them labor for hours and not grow bored or restless. The only difference from old times was that now, thanks to the Music classes, Audi was humming quietly.

Her ear flicked slightly when Haggis complained about the plant not cooperating, but it wasn't until his yelp that she actually looked at him, startled, hackles rising in alarm. She saw the leaf falling and the boy putting his finger in his mouth and her brow stitched with concern. Had he hurt himself somehow? Quickly, she trotted over, peering up at the goat demon as she deposited the herbs she had gathered into the basket, without even thinking picking up the dropped leaf and adding it to the others as well. After that was done, she proceeded to stare at Haggis with eyes open wide.

"You okay?" she asked, reaching up to grab his elbow and pull down on it to steal a glance at his finger.

The pain had dulled down to a bearable, low heartbeat within his finger. The only downside was that, with every heartbeat, a fresh wave of blood decided to appearify from his wound. As Audi inspected it, Haggis swallowed and tried his best to keep his eyes away from the finger. It wasn't like blood made him faint or anything, but the site of it still made the goat-demon a little uneasy. Plus the smell was downright unbearable. Blood smelt just like it tasted, like copper and some sort of strange liquid cleaner. He leaned back, using his free hand to balance himself on the ground. He could feel the moist soil of the garden squishing between his trembling fingers as he gave a reassuring smile not really in any direction in particular. Just everywhere but the blood.

"Ahaha, y-yeah. I'm f-f-fine. It's just a little cut." He managed to sputter out, wiggling his arm a little in an attempt to ease it out of Audi's grip, "Those ones in the middle are tough, though...you should be careful when cutting them." Sitting up straight, Haggis reached for the end of his pant leg and gripped it firmly. Luckily they were already flimsy to begin with, and a small strip pealed off easily. Holding it up, Haggis smiled at Audi before saying, "Just let me wrap it up and it should be fine until we go back to the castle..." His tone managed to stay even, though it sounded like he was trying to convince himself the most.

Some kind of a morbid curiosity prevented Audi from averting her gaze from the flowing, pulsating blood. Despite the boy's wriggling, her grasp on his arm remained steadfast as her fingers refused to let go. The ratgirl's brow creased. That wasn't so bad, really, she'd seen worse injuries, but Haggis was clearly distressed about it, so maybe it was more serious than it appeared... if only it would stop bleeding so much. As she stared, the bright red liquid's stream thinned somewhat, its color turning darker in places. Hit by a sudden nausea, Audi let go and stepped away, swaying slightly. She brought up a hand to clutch at her dizzy head and shut her eyes for a moment. That was weird... she was anything but squeamish, it simply wasn't in the ratfolk's nature to be...

Overcoming the strange feeling, Audi blinked, then looked to the piece of rag Haggis was holding up. What? He was going to wrap it up? That was not how you treated a injury. She put one hand on her hip in exasperation then glared at the stupid strip. "No! Dirty." Honestly, humans had no idea sometimes. Rolling her eyes, deciding to show Haggis proper wound care, Audi reached to grab his wrist and lick the wound clean.

Haggis couldn't help but jump in surprise as Audi began licking his wound. Tail swishing back and forth, he watched with wide eyes. At first, he attempted to pull away, wiggling his hand in her own as he mumbled, "Oh, n-no please you don't...Blood probably doesn't taste very good." The way it tasted to him before, coppery and way too similar to a penny for him to imagine it was a can, he couldn't imagine doing this on purpose! As she continued to clean the wound, however, he began to cease in his movements. The motion had become repetitive enough to place the goat-boy in a state of limbo. Was it due to his own animal-ish instincts? Haggis wasn't sure that he knew himself. Eyes narrowing, he sighed a little and waited for her to finish, recalling for a brief moment the instincts of animals and how they varied. The wound ceased pulsating, and the blood thinned until none was left, and only a little bit of cut skin stuck up from his finger.

Well, at least it was clean now.

The state that overcame him for a brief moment dissipated as if it were never there. He flexed his hand a little in Audi's grip before looking up past her and towards the trees that lay just outside the herb garden.

"How does a snack sound?" He decided, pushing some of his hair back with his free hand, "Do you like fruit?" He truly wasn't hungry himself, at least not hungry enough for a full meal. Still, a small bit of fruit couldn't hurt. Especially around this time of year, when all of it was so ripe that one could simply brush the fruit of the tree and it would loosen. Not enough to be considered rotten, but enough to be ripe to the point where if you didn't eat it soon it would become wasted. In all honesty, Haggis believed that was the best stage of any type of fruit.

Of course, she disregarded all his protesting and simply continued with her job, entirely convinced that she was in the right and it was for Haggis' own good. Just as Haggis seemed to settle down after a while, lulled by the repetitiveness, her eyes slowly shut as she focused on licking the wound.

After she was done, she smiled with satisfaction, patting the top of his hand and letting go. She smacked her lips, the odd taste of the goat person thing's blood lingering in her mouth. As little attention as Audi usually paid to what people said, there were certain words that immediately caught her attention, and "snack" was definitely one of them. She felt accomplished, so what better way to celebrate than with eating? Granted, she also ate when she was sad, she ate when she was tired, and she ate when there was nothing else to do, but... that was irrelevant. Smile spreading across her face, Audi nodded energetically, then bound through the rows of plants and then across the grass. She stopped abruptly under an apple tree and quickly scanned the ground for any fallen ones; failing to find any, she giggled with and jumped enthusiastically at the tree's trunk, sharp claws easily finding support in the rough bark. Once she reached a branch large enough to support her, she perched on top of it, smiled mischievously, and grabbed an apple to pelt Haggis with.

Haggis yelped and stepped quickly out of the way, watching as the apple hit the ground with a thud that was a little too loud for an apple to make. Leaning down, he picked it up and examined the surface carefully. It wasn't completely red yet. In fact, there were still flecks of yellow and a little green littering it's surface. When he looked up, however, the rest of the tree's apples seemed almsot flawless. Shining red surfaces reflected off of the noon-day sun and sparkled with such intensity that it made Haggis' eyes widen and his mouth water. The fruit on the trees had always looked too good to be true.

Snapping out of it, he smiled up at Audi sheepishly. "You almost got me there." He chuckled, examining the piece of fruit in his hand. Reaching out, Haggis took another apple from a low hanging branch and plucked it off. He took a third one from the ground, it had fallen at some point in the Autumn, and held them all in his hand. With a deep breath, Haggis began to throw one around in his hand before adding the second. The two spiraled around each other for a good few seconds before he added the third. Haggis stared intently at one spot in his hand, careful to try and keep his balance as the three apples were juggled neatly in his hand for a good thirty seconds before he wobbled and they came falling out of it.

Haggis laughed again before looking up at Audi curiously, putting one of the more red apples to his mouth and taking a savory bite of it. The flavor filled his mouth and made his tail twitch in delight. Perhaps he would try a Pear or other fruit while he they were eating. For now, the goat boy contented himself with sitting under the apple tree, his back against the rough bark, and munching on his delicious treat.

A bit disappointed at the fruit missing its mark, Audi pouted a bit, then turned around and slumped down to lie on the branch, limbs falling on its sides. With her good eye, she observed the boy's movements lazily. She felt a sudden wave of sleepiness begin to creep over her, but it all seemed to vanish when Haggis started juggling. She raised her head and watched his trick with eyes open wide, clearly impressed, and even when he finally dropped them she seemed to still be in awe. That was quite something...!

Audi's hands and feet found the branch again and she pushed herself up, then leaped down the tree, aiming to land gracefully in front of the boy, but ending up tumbling a few steps away. Obviously not very bothered, she sprung right up off the grass and shook herself off, then trotted back to Haggis and sat down on her heels. She glanced around and picked two apples that she could reach, then offered them to him on outstretched hands.

"Teach me." she said, a sparkle of enthusiasm in her eyes.

Haggis had discontinued his actions of happy munching as he watched Audi land in front of him. She was quite something, he had to admit. He could never do that without a) hitting someone or b) landing on his face. As she offered him the two other apples again, the boy could feel a small blush spreading across his cheeks. It was something he had learned a long time ago, taught to him by a merchant in Holland. Smiling down at the girl in front of him, Haggis smiled slightly and accepted the apples from her, sitting up a little straighter.

"Okay," He agreed, "But we're going to have to...erm... start simple." Haggis placed two apples to his side and handed Audi a single one while saying, "Try throwing a single apple from one hand to the other...l-like this." Haggis took an apple for himself and began throwing it from his right hand to his left hand. He kept his eyes fixed in between his hands as he continued, "It'll help if you throw it so it reaches your eyes...Th-That way you won't have to keep following it."

Haggis figured this was the easy step, actually he knew it was, but it was better to go slow than try to rush everything at once. "The tricky part will be trying to add the second one." Haggis murmured, mostly to himself.

When he agreed, she smiled, her ears perking up with the eagerness to learn. She accepted the apple, then her gaze became glued to his hands as he demonstrated, the tip of her tail flicking idly in the grass behind her. Well, that seemed easy enough, but she still focused all of her attention on the task, squinting slightly as she leaned back a bit and held out the apple in one hand.

She tossed it from one hand to another. First low, then in an arch reaching her eye level. It was easy, easy enough to do with her eyes closed, she thought, as she quickly proved that thought true by shutting them and repeating the motion a few times. With a happy giggle, she looked to Haggis again expectantly. The next step would probably be more difficult, she figured, but she was confident in that she would be able to do it, eventually. Curiously, she looked Haggis over again, wondering what other wonderful hidden skills he possessed. The school was so full of amazing people she could meet and befriend and learn from, it made her incredibly happy, and the warm feeling in her chest showed in the affectionate stare she was pinning the boy with.

Haggis watched as Audi juggled the first apple neatly. There was something amusing, he found, about watching the rat-girl twirl an apple in her palm. Now it was time for phase 2 of juggling. Reaching out, he took a second apple in his hands and held them out to Audi in demonstration. There was one perfect apple in each of his hands, shining and sparkling as the light hit them through the tree tops.

"Okay, now it gets a little tricky." He stated, "Um, just take the apple in your left hand I suppose," He held said hand up, "And throw it like you did with only one. But before you catch it you throw the other apple." To demonstrate the goat-boy through the apple up in the air, keeping it eye level with him as he did the first one. Just before the apple landed with its counterpart in his right hand, however, Haggis threw the other apple. He caught both of them easily once both passed his line of vision. He looked back down at Audi, his ears perked up slightly with amusement. Haggis loved juggling, it was an amazing past time. Teaching someone to have just as much fun as he was having was a great feeling.

"Now, you may not...quite...get it at first." He reassured Audi quickly, "But you'll just have to keep practicing, okay? We can try three when you get two down." After he explained, Haggis went back to absently throwing the two apples around for a few moments in his hands before offering one to Audi. He could always pick more apples if it was needed, for the tree above them bore many of the brilliant red fruits with pride.

Audi observed the demonstration carefully with wide, attentive eyes. Well, eye. The other one wasn't really helping, glazed over with a blueish-tinted, dull whiteness that obscured most of its vision, save for some peripheral flickering. Having gotten into that accident when she was very young, she had learned to cope and adjusted well, not even remembering what was it like to have both healthy eyes.

However, sometimes depth perception could be an issue.

Audi didn't really realize as much, though, accepting the second fruit from Haggis eagerly and holding out both of the apples like he did earlier. Up they went, and then down, but while one found its mark in her palm, the other hit the ground and rolled away in the green grass. The ratgirl's brow creased slightly, but she decided she'd take Haggis' words to heart, leaned over to pick up the apple and tried again. Well. That was proving to be a little more difficult than she had expected. At the third attempt, she'd managed to almost grasp the fruit, but its smooth shiny surface proved to be too slippery to hold on to and it slipped from her fingers again. She let out a small hiss of frustration. Fourth try, she finally managed to grab it, only because she dug her pointy claws into its skin. Giggling, Audi held up her hand, the impaled apple looking almost like she were balancing it on the tip of her fingers. Soon her smile faltered slightly, though, and a sigh escaped her.

"It's hard."
