The Last Book Empty The Last Book

Post  Tony Sharp Sat Jun 09, 2012 11:49 pm

...So that, in the end, there was no end.

As his pupil-less, yellow eyes skimmed over the final words of the novel, he clammed it shut, nodding to himself as a vague notion of approval. Despite its mildly impressive girth, he'd read the thing from cover to cover in the space of merely a few minutes, clearing entire pages in a matter of seconds, whilst absorbing every word. It was both a blessing and a curse, he saw. It was efficient for time, but he'd never be permitted to enjoy a book for long. And his permanent, photographic memory caused no such enjoyment from just reading it again. A great annoyance.

Piling the book away, Tony considered grabbing another to settle down with, seeing as there was little else to do. Then, being horrendously reliable, his memory returned to bite him. There was no more books. He'd read them all. Troubled, Tony made the calculations in his head yet again - how could that be? He hadn't been here for long, had he? But no matter how many times he added it up, the truth remained clear. There were no more books on these shelves that could ever bring him joy again.

Panicking, the tiny plant person rushed to the nearest bookshelf: young adult fiction. He'd reorganised it fourteen times in his spare time, but right now, he honestly didn't mind reorganising it once more. Long, root-like fingers extended from his stub-like arms, reaching desperately for the shelves. Then, with a certain amount of willpower, he reaches for as many books as he could manage, and tore them from the shelves onto the floor. Names flicked by, Malorie Blackman, Garth Nix, William Goldling-- No no no no! He'd already read them.

After desperately scooping at the shelf, the treant was forced to give in after realising he'd emptied the lot. Briefly, he gazed over the mess he'd created; an impressively large pile of novels lay in complete disarray, scattered around him. Spines undoubtedly damaged. Staring blankly, he took a few steps backwards, staring at the heap. It wasn't sadness or anger that showed on his expression - merely a sort of bewilderment. The sort that seemed to ask, What now?

The Last Book Empty Re: The Last Book

Post  YuukiHyouketsu Sun Jun 10, 2012 12:05 am

Yuuki was quietly browsing the books of the library. she hadn't gotten around to coming here much, and despite her love of books, she had failed to check out a single one since arriving at the academy. she finally had the means and the time to check out a book from the library, and sit and read, and yet...

yuuki shook her head in exasperation with herself. well, better make up for lost time at least. she frowned, trying to track down the young adult's section. she had a hankering for a mystery, or perhaps a good romance--anything but sci-fi, as that was a bit wasted on her. she'd read a few of Shakespeare's works while at the institution, and definitely found them interesting, but she wanted something a little less complex now.

she was just coming up to the young adult section (with her wings tightly pressed to her back to avoid knocking anything over) she heard an odd noise. frowning, she jogged the last few feet, and rounded the corner to see...

a strange, humanoid plant person standing amidst a poor-looking pile of books. Yuuki blinked, trying to take the sight in.

"Daijoubu--are you alright?" the confusion of meeting someone new--coupled by the odd situation and the appearance of the person in front of her--had caused her to slip into japanese. lovely.

after a moment's hesitation of looking between the plant person and the books, yuuki nervously headed over to the forlorn pile of paper backs and hard covers, and tried to straighten them out--she could at least lessen the damage and strain to the ones that were left flipped open at all angles.

"Dou-" no, english, darnet. "What happened?"

The Last Book Empty Re: The Last Book

Post  Tony Sharp Sun Jun 10, 2012 11:36 pm

Tony hadn't seemed to realise that anyone else had entered the room, so when the worried voice of Yuuki piped up behind him, he almost flinched with fright. "Fine," he quickly, and immediately huffed, before realising that his response was not as eloquent or as fanciful as he tended to speak.

Straightening his posture (though it hardly made him seem any taller), he addressed the girl with a carefully calm expression, as if to disguise his recent moments of despair. He could not hide the little twinge of approval he felt as she went to neaten the books, but it was coupled with that awful feeling of guilt of knowing that he'd caused it in the first place, so he said nothing.

"Genki desu," he repeated, wearing a small, understanding smile that he struggled to maintain. "It- It is a much unfortunate occurrence such as this that... these books would have to be... so forcibly and immediately removed from their shelves," he rambled nervously, knowing at once that he could not admit to this girl of his recent slip-up as a responsible librarian.

"...A fly it was, those foul, disease-ridden pests, that... threatened to taint these precious books. I was desperate not to... to allow it to carry through such a... harmful crime. And I would have to remove it through any means necessary... which would eventually bring all of these books to a collapse." He blinked solemnly, not typically accustomed to lying, so he found himself hoping that she would believe his rather ridiculous story.

"I am most sorry for... any inconveniences." He bowed his little head lowly towards her.

Post  YuukiHyouketsu Mon Jun 11, 2012 12:06 am

Yuuki blinked, taking in the plant person's expression. he definitely didn't seem fine--and he also wasn't a very good liar.
"yes...," she replied, trying to work out how to answer to his strange explanation, "it wouldn't be right for a fly to be in such a lovely library--they're a real annoyance." she figured it may be best not to point out his lie. what good would that do?

the bow, however, gave her a bit of a surprise--she was so used to being the one doing the bowing to others, or at least a slight change of wing posture to show respect. this particular character turning the tables on her made her mind blank for a second, before coming to a conclusion.

"I assume you're the librarian here, then?" she asked, with a little smile. she never remembered this place having a librarian in all of the other times she'd been here, but it was nice to know that there was one now. a librarian really made the feel of the place complete--the only thing left would be for her to find one of the older books in the place, open it up, and inhale the scent of old books that she loved. though she wouldn't admit it to this staff member (who knows how he would take it?) she and her friends had spent a few weeks taking refuge in a library. it had been one of their better hideouts, and it really had felt like home.

Tony stifled a small, sigh of relief at her words, and the fact that she didn't seem to press for any more answers. "Indeed," he quietly murmured; for once, at a loss of words.

It was then his pupil-less eyes trailed towards the unruly heap of books on the floor, arriving at the conclusion that they probably weren't going to clean theirselves. Stiffly, he moved forward, carefully gathering some books in his root-like fingers, frowning unhappily at how of them seemed a little rumpled. Muttering to himself, he seemed delayed in answering the girl's question.

"Librarian? Ah... yes, yes I am." His lips twitched as if attempting to smile, but it too quickly fell back into a frown. "Did... did you want... do you require assistance? Books? Searching for books?" He cradled The Notebook in his hands. "I know books. I know plenty books. I know all of them." His eye twitched.

"Every single one."

"well, i was, in fact, looking for a good romance or mystery from the young adults section, just for a nice read." she looked about the library for a moment, chewing on her bottom lip. the librarian's comment had surprised and slightly confused her. there had to have been hundreds, if not thousands of books!

"all of them..? but...how long have you worked here?" it couldn't have been that long, could it? she didn't remember him being here during her first visit to the library...

"I... I see..." Tony tried to focus on her request. Romance or mystery novel. Right. He could find that. He could find any novel he wanted, But at her question, his expression would twitch slightly, into something of a wide, disturbing grin.

"N-not long. Not long at all." He looked to the palm of his vine-like fingers, blinking slowly. Then, he turned his hand towards Yuuki, as if to show her something. At first, there didn't appear to be anything different about his hand, until one peered closely, where they could see the skin splitting in the centre of it. Surely, one could see a yellow orb where it had split, peering out at her. It was another eye.

"I have many eyes, you see. I can read them all with such speed..." Suddenly, desperation flashed in his eyes and he leaned closer towards her. "I have one request to ask of you... just one. If you'd be so kind." He looked around edgily, as if paranoid that others had witnessed his lack of responsibility. His voice lowered to a hush.

"Please... tell me something that I don't know."

Yuuki was fascinated by the idea that the librarian would have so many eyes--and they would have to work independently, too, for him to be able to read so much at a time...the entire principle was pretty wild. plus, the fact that he would be able to focus on so much at once would require some wild brain capacity, wouldn't it? talk about multitasking....

Yuuki blinked in surprise at the request. what on earth could she know that the librarian wouldn't? almost shyly, she replied,

"what...what about the history of my species? would that work?" the librarian probably knew about dragons in general, but there were so many different kinds...she figured he wouldn't know specifically how her demi-dragon species came about.

or at least, she hoped he didn't. the only way he'd really be able to know is if some crack-pot from the institute wrote about it or something. God, that would be a nightmare.

"Your species?" Tony looked immediately alerted, pulling his outstretched hand away. In fact, his leaves seemed to quiver in an excited, yet rather frantic sort of manner. His root-like fingers twitched, coiling knots around each other mindlessly as he gazed. He certainly hadn't the faintest idea what species she was, but if assumptions were to go by in a place like this, she probably wasn't human.

"Yes, yes! Anything will work! I need to know!" Setting the books down on the ground in a small stack, he climbed upon them, sitting on top just to be at a slightly higher level for Yuuki.

Of course, he'd read all about mythical creatures and the like, but more often than not, they were written on the biased account of humans. They weren't very reliable or knowledgeable at all. Cross legged, he looked directly at Yuuki, trying to smile in an encouraging manner, but ended up looking more impatient instead. "Tell me... everything!"

Post  YuukiHyouketsu Sun Jul 15, 2012 1:28 pm

goodness, he was certainly...excited for new information. Yuuki was a little nervous about giving him a history run-down, but she would do her best.

"ok, well...back in the medieval ages, there were all sorts of dragons. i'm...," what was the right word? "..decended," (yes, that would work) "from a kind of elemental dragon. there for five types, and, at some point down the line, there was only one dragon of each type. the rest were all killed for sport, though the last five were given gold and jewels during each Year of the Dragon.

the five dragons were: a blue female water dragon, a red male fire dragon, a blonde male lightning dragon, a green female earth dragon, and a white female air dragon."

she took a deep breath. here's where it gets complicated.

"the water dragon, Ketsuta, and the fire dragon, Bero were mates, but they couldn't seem to conceive. each and every time they tried, the hatchling died. so, without Ketsuta knowing, Bero left her for the wind dragon, Anemone, in an attempt to conceive and revive the species."

Yuuki felt the pain in her heart, the reflection of Ketsuta's pain over Bero's betrayal. ketsuta's memories felt almost like they were her own. nervously, Yuuki glanced at Mr. Sharp, as if wondering if this sort of narration was what he'd wanted to hear. it sounded almost more like a fairy tale than facts, and so she worried about what he would think.

Tony closed his eyes, concentrating deeply on Yuuki's words, savouring them for the few moments that they would last. Dragons. There were plenty novels of dragons, but this was the first real one he'd met - and it was actually rather exciting. Every titbit of information under each word gave him a new, refreshing sensation, like drops of rainwater.

Dragons, killed for sport, five left, jewellery, elements... And it seemed even mighty dragons had their own troubles of love affairs - for entirely different reasons. However, when she paused, Tony looked up sharply towards her, his eyes wide. She looked nervous - and rightly so - but what overrode his hesitance was a deeply set craving for more.

"D.. does it continue? Is there more?" He leaned forward, leaning his arms on his makeshift stool as he stared intensely, yet anxiously. It was obvious that he didn't seem to really intend to scare Yuuki, but he was desperate. He didn't want it to end yet. "G-go on! Please!"

Post  YuukiHyouketsu Sun Jul 15, 2012 2:20 pm

yuuki took another deep, nervous breath, and kept going.

"when ketsuta found out, she was furious. she killed Anemone, and she attacked the village that had been bringing them gold for centuries. i've never seen someone so angry...," she clamped her mouth shut and closed her eyes for a moment, realizing the wording of that last statement. still, she plunged on.
"the village wouldn't stand for it. they decided to create a makeshift jailing system for the dragons, because they didn't want to kill off an endangered species. instead, they started to lock the five dragon's spirits away into host bodies--usually unborn fetuses. it was some kind of mage that did it, though i'm not entirely sure on the process." Ketsuta's memories were very fuzzy there. she'd been drugged in some way, and she'd only seen the runes drawn on the floor.

"the plan was to release the dragons sometime down the road, but Ketsuta wouldn't recant, and all of the dragons seemed to be seething at her, as well as each other for what happened. it was a mess. they couldn't let them out."

"the group that started the host process turned into more of an organization to keep an eye on the dragons and their hosts. the dragons were basically kept in a hibernation-type state while locked away, and though they could see what was going on, they couldn't act, or even make contact with their hosts. they were bitter. after a while, the organization realized that the dragons could never be released: the current world was no place for the creatures, and the world of magic was sort of fading. even the mage that transferred the dragon to its new host only new that one spell, because it was the only one really needed, other than a few simple charms. the organization, which was by now mostly made up of scientists, came up with a new plan."

goodness, she'd never told anyone this much before. still, it was like she couldn't stop. she kept going.

"they wanted to mix the dragon's DNA with the next generation of hosts to see what would happen. the results were... disastrous. the dragons became stronger and even took control over some of the hosts. and the hosts themselves gained new abilities that made the scientists regard them as dangerous. several of them were kept in institutions and were told that they were mentally disturbed to keep them from becoming "a danger to society"'

here, her voice sounded quite bitter. she would never forgive them for what they did, and for a moment, she seemed caught up in her own memories about what they did to her.

Tony kept still and quiet as she spoke, hanging on every word she said. The history of these dragons were certainly eventful, if not rather dramatic. It was all so overwhelming, all this new, enlightening knowledge. She seemed nervous, but if she didn't want to tell him, she wouldn't, right? There was no pressure.... right?

He nodded slowly - pleased that he was able to understand most of what she said, trying to work it all out in his head. And how she was able to recall so much vivid detail, and how much Tony just desperately wanted to sink his vines into her head, just so he could see her thoughts and observe it all for himself. If it was all true, anyway.

"Oh my," he said as she trailed off. "I'd.. never assumed that something of such a magnitude would be brewing beneath the face of civilisation... " He blinked for a moment, before peering intently at her expression. "Are you quite alright...? Is there any more? I simply must hear more of it!"

Yuuki grimaced, rubbing her forehead.

"there...there isn't much more. history wise, i mean. everything else was what happened with my friends and I...," and she wasn't sure if she wanted to get into all of that. no, it was too painful..
"after getting away from the institute, we kind of split up, and i came here. Ketsuta was...she was my dragon. she...she died, a few months ago...," or committed suicide, Yuuki wasn't entirely sure.
"she left me her memories, though. that's how i know so much. otherwise, i would just know what the institute told me, and that was very little."

what yuuki had told the librarian already was all history--it wasn't as emotional for her as the full story. if she went any further, she would be getting into her own personal life, along with that of the rest of her family, and she just couldn't do it.

subconsiously, she reached out toward Zigg with her mind, like someone reaching out to hold a hand. she felt him respond almost immediately, and her heart warmed at how quickly he'd responded. her wings shifted lightly against her back as though trying to get comfortable, she she slid her hand along the feather in her hair.

There wasn't much more, she said. Immediately, Tony's excitement simmered down upon realising that she had reached the end of history telling. So there was little else to learn? And he was realising that he really didn't want to know Yuuki's deep personal life, not if it was causing her any grief. Besides, for now, his craving for knowledge had been satisfied. He'd learned so much during this meeting---

He suddenly stared at her as she mentioned Ketsuta's memories. His fingers twitched again. "You mean... you can see everything that she's seen...?" He stood upon the books, his enthusiasm returning. He tried to hold himself back, but despite his efforts, his vines tried to reach out towards Yuuki, drifting just slightly in the air.

"I must see her memories!" he demanded, harshly, before silencing himself with a wince. "No... I'm sorry. I just- I need to-! I--!" Mentally conflicted, one hand retreated to grapple at his own face indecisively, not willing to pry into the thoughts of a lovely girl he'd just met. But his everlasting strong desire eventually won over. He looked to her pleadingly.

"Might I just look into your mind? For just a moment? It won't hurt... It won't hurt at all, I promise!"

Yuuki's eyes widened.
"you...you can see into my mind? her memories?" was he like Zigg? no...it seemed that his vines played a large role in it.

Yuuki thought about it for a moment. ketsuta's memories were not her own, so she wouldn't be divulging her own personal life. and yet, it felt odd to be sharing something like that....

but she needed someone else to know what had happened. she had to show someone--not just tell, but let them really SEE what had happened in Ketsuta's life; prove that the dragon hadn't really been a monster, just heart broken.

Zigg she called to him. can you bring her memories forward? so that those are all he sees? she felt rather than saw Zigg's expression of worry, but he did as she'd requested.

calmly, Yuuki fixed her blue eyes on Tony's yellow ones, and she nodded.
"yes. I...i need to show someone what really happened to her." she was nervous about him looking into her head, but she knew that if the librarian strayed, Zigg would make sure to wall him off and keep him on Ketsuta's memories only. Yuuki braced herself; the only experience she'd had with somone looking into her head was with Zigg, and he usually just listened to what someone was thinking at that moment, rather than peering through memories.

Nodding fervently at her question, Tony seemed excited at the prospect of looking within someone's mind, yet nervous at the same time. He hadn't done it for a long time - what if something went wrong, what if...? But there was no time for second thoughts.

"Thank you... It won't hurt--" he reassured, his trembling vine hands reaching out for her head. Oh, why was she letting him do this? It felt downright intrusive, but he couldn't stop himself at all. But she seemed willing enough to spare so much, he knew that he would have to repay her.

Upon touching her head, he allowed his vines to coil around it, sifting through her hair before arriving at each ear. Tendrils snaking around, they manage to delve within the ear-hole, burrowing deeply. Like he had informed, it wouldn't hurt, but it would feel dreadfully, horribly, cringe-worthingly uncomfortable. It was possible to observe the mind without even doing this, but Tony was determined to make the best of this opportunity.

The link finally made, Tony shut his eyes, concentrating fully on trying to shut off his own conscience. It differed from human 'sleep', which was so much more timely. The moment he was able to, his entire body froze where it was, as if no longer occupied by a functioning mind. Instead, he searched for another body to occupy - Yuuki's.

Sending an experimental Hello? in her mind, he mentally braced himself for what he might encounter.

Yuuki stiffled a surprised gasp as the tentacles were suddenly burrowing into her ears. it felt...freaky. like back when she wore earplugs to stifle Terri's snoring, only the feeling went much further in.

yuuki, what is he doing!?
Zigg's worried voice echoed in her mind. she quickly shushed him before the librarian heard. she carefully made sure that he was out of the librarians field of ...vision?..while still allowing Zigg to direct her memories.

Yuuki shut her eyes, trying to pretend that there weren't vines in her ears, and answered Tony's call with a wordless thought, just a brush of what looked like swirling blue light. Zigg however kept his own red light to himself, thank goodness. carefully, Yuuki pulled Ketsuta's memories forward, and instantly her mind was filled with a dark, navy blue color as the bit of Ketsuta that had been left behind in her death flooded Yuuki's forebrain.

It was a weird feeling, floating in nothingness. Not even a solid entity, but a floating essence. It was dreamlike - he felt like he had a functioning body, but at the same time, he couldn't physically feel it nor see it at all.

He felt another presence within her mind, but alarm surged through him upon realising that it was not Yuuki. There was another soul here?! He panicked for a moment, before a swirling blue light took over his senses, a light that he could feel was Yuuki's. Maybe he'd mistaken it.

As the blue enveloped him, his conscience echoed another message; Everything... Show me everything!

Yuuki focused, and carefully pulled the strands of memory forward. all of ketsuta's memories began flowing in a line toward Tony, with walls carefully constructed to block off more personal thoughts and memories, like what happened at the institute, and when she met Lupine. all the memories flowed down an almost corridor, beginning with Ketsuta, standing proudly on a cliff while she surveyed the townspeople with her love and mate, Bero.

in a quick fashion, though one that could be easily followed through the way that Tony was watching them, the memories flowed on, moving through Ketsuta's several failed births and Bero's frustration as he told his sister, Tsuta Gaidoku, that he was leaving for several weeks.

the memories continued on, and a small girl with curly blonde hair came into view. she visited Ketsuta even though she shouldn't have been allowed to, and gave her a gold bracelet. she kept her company, and Ketsuta grew to see her as her hatchling rather than a human girl.

yuuki had almost forgotten those memories--she'd forgotten how much pain would come about later. it hadn't just been Bero. somehow she'd forgotten that...

Pride. The feeling flourished through him, as he observed the scenery from the cliffs above. A deep connection somewhere. Wind flowing by, everything seemed so peaceful and nice, but Tony knew, from the tales that Yuuki had told, that things would take a turn for the worst.

And she was right. All too suddenly, a stabbing sort of feeling struck him - overwhelming pain and grief, stirred into one. It was like nothing he'd ever felt before, surely, a pain that he would never be able to understand for himself. It was gruesome, the sight of dead children; children that were her own. It was almost too much to bear, and he just wanted to shut his eyes and look away. But he couldn't. It wasn't his memory to control.

And who was this girl? He hadn't been aware of her before, but he could feel her importance... a connection.

His conscience would have screamed signals of sadness, but a stubborn sense of curiosity kept him awaiting the next sight.

then, the rage as Ketsuta found Bero with Anemone. she killed the white dragon, then flew over the village in anger. there, she saw the little girl...as she was hung for visiting the dragon before the official year that gifts were meant to be given to them.

Yuuki gasped as Ketsuta's pain and suffering wrenched at her heart. and still, she plunged on....

the memories continued on, all the way though the story Yuuki had told the librarian, the mage performing the incantation as a blurry image before Ketsuta's vision suddenly plunged into the darkness of the first host.

Yuuki felt Zigg unseeingly shift away the memories of Ketsuta's life with Yuuki, but one slipped through: Ketsuta's death itself.

Ketsuta was there in front of her, the beautiful blue dragon with her sapphire eyes watching her calmly as her body faded

Yuuki let out a mental shriek of pain as what Ketsuta had felt when she faded away seared through her mind. Zigg suddenly came out of hiding, trying to wrestle the memory back. She heard him calling out to her, to pull her back into the present, but the pain didn’t want to recede…

ketsuta's last words echoed through her mind: "I can't stand not being able to live my life anymore. Please, Yuuki…this will be the only favor I've ever asked of you—of anyone. Please remember. Please don't let my life disappear from history…remember…"

Yuuki!! Zigg yelled again, as warm, red tendrils of light reached out toward her.

Tony tried to prepare himself for the next intense emotion, but still, they only continued to overwhelm him. In his quiet, quaint life of studying by himself in library attics, he'd never felt any emotions such as this, and failed to understand it completely. But it was undeniably horrible. He had to... had to tear himself away. But he couldn't. It was as horrible as he would have expected, and it at least proved that what Yuuki had said was true. It was anything but optimistic though.

But then a scene arrived - a scene that Yuuki had not told him about, a scene that he didn't expect. And suddenly, it was Yuuki's pain that he could feel resonating within him. Ketsuta's words rang in his mind, and suddenly, everything was becoming infinitely more clear. He could not forget even if he had wanted to.

All so much was happening at once, and he barely even realised the other presence in there until he heard the call of their name. There was so much that Tony wanted to do, but he was powerless in here. He could only observe the red tendrils, panic rising within him.

the red tendrils slowly enveloped Yuuki, and she felt warmth spread through her body: not the kind of heat that would make her feel dehydrated, but a different kind, one that gave her strength. the memory was pushed away, and the blue-haired girl was suddenly back to normal--but then she'd realized what had happened. she floundered for a moment, trying to hide Zigg again, but instead he turned on the librarian, seething.

Yuuki grabbed hold of him and spun him to face her, though it was all just their souls interacting--Zigg's face was not visible, nor any of his features.

Yuuki stared him in the 'eye'. It was my fault. i'm all right," she murmured to him, and slowly, the heat that had begun to build up scaled back to something more comforting, and the presence faded back again. still a little shaken, Yuuki reached up with her physical hands, and carefully reached up, and began to gently pull the vines back out.

Anger. Tony could feel anger... directed at... him? He wanted to flee, but he had no control here, he was merely a watchful, unblinking eye. That is, until Yuuki managed to intervene, and soon, he realised that things were returning to normal again. Well, as normal as things would ever get.

It was then that he found himself being pulled away gradually, 'til Yuuki's mind was just a speck in the figurative distance. He would've welcomed the freedom were he not submerged in a thick, overwhelming darkness. He choked, trying to gasp for air, but there was none. For a moment, he was certain of his impending death, being suffocated by the strangling blackness. He couldn't breathe, he couldn't breathe, he--

He couldn't breathe. His eyes blinked open. He'd never taken a single breath of air for three years, why was it that he suddenly desired to now? Of course he couldn't breathe! He was a plant!

Still perplexed, he looked up to realise that he was still here in the library with Yuuki. Flustered, he pulled his vines away, still trying to get used to having a body once again. "Oh... that was... quite the, um..." He found himself at a loss of words. "...experience..."
