Lost in Translation [roomies] Empty Lost in Translation [roomies]

Post  Vernal Equinox Tue Jan 01, 2013 12:03 am

If there was one thing They could be counted on, Vernal mused while lying on his overly-fluffy bed, it was Their ability to forget. They forgot about Ambrose in the asylum, his own past until recently, and now the giving back of his original wardrobe. The clothing was not the direct cause of his grief, though; in fact, the outfit had rather grown on him. The suit underneath was tailored to his exact measurements and the trench coat itself was rather fashionable. He liked how it kept him warm in the now-drafty castle and added flair to every movement he made. It was the familiarity the clothing brought that caused strife.

He had never worn a trench coat, no, but he could now recall others wearing it. They would march down the streets step by step, arms held high with the roaring crowds street by packed street-side. He himself would sit upon a family member's shoulders and shout with them-- no. No, this is exactly what They wanted. Reminiscence was entertainment, and he wasn't going to provide. He glared at the tail-end of the coat while grabbing his received Secret Santa gift, a gossip magazine that even They would be proud of. The man had already read through it twice with greedy eyes, but there were still a couple surveys left to fill out--

Or, pipped in a familiar voice of helium, you could work on Richard's list.

The man groaned, knowing that the old friend was right but not liking it any better. "Fine," he shot back verbally, putting away the gossip magazine and replacing it with some paper. He grabbed hold of an overly-adorned pen and began numbering the sides Romanly. A hate list-- how poetic. He wanted it tangible as to not forget (he did not trust himself remembering such painful things), but what if someone saw? He supposively had a roommate-- what if he managed to stumble across it?

The vampire's sadist grin flashed across his mind; he sharply inhaled. This . . . This was going to be more painful than making the list itself, but if it would keep things safe, then why not? With held breath, he titled the top of the top page: HassListe.

Are you sure about this?
Not in the slightest. He had to, though, if only to spite that cursed counselor. The words, too, came out easier in the native language, dashing across the page without a second thought. His thoughts were now a breeze.

1) die Blutsaugers Grinsen. Curse him and his ideas.
2) der Kandidate und die Kandidatin with the female candidate underlined heavily. He would add details of his hatred later.
3) Deutsch. How ironic.

He continued to pour onto the list, belly-flat on the bed and scrambling away. Vier! Funf! Sex! Gott Sie dank someone wasn't in here right now; Vernal's mind was now swarming with the language. He honestly didn't know if he could properly respond in English right now when he was scriben away . . .

Lost in Translation [roomies] Empty Re: Lost in Translation [roomies]

Whatever had happened at the Winter Ball was on his list of top 5 things that Owen did not want to think about. The other four happened to be Esteban's challenge, that sadistic fairy, life in general and laundry. They were heavy competitors.

But alas, there were new dorm rooms to attend to. He'd not really been interested in the whole affair, given that he rarely really saw his old room mate. He'd perhaps caught the memo that he was getting a different soul to be stuck with - but what did that matter? Social interaction, unfortunately, wasn't really on his list of priorities. Nor was caring.

So there he was, dragging himself down the corridor, with a ruggedly old rucksack following suit behind him across the floor. For someone who'd been staying at the academy for nearly two entire years, it seemed almost pitifully light. And it was - perhaps a few pairs of clothing, a camera, motorcycle keys, some old magazines, a jar of mirror shards, some sun pin that he couldn't discern just why he kept, and... ah, yes. Secret santa gift. Truly, the ornaments took up more space in the sack than anything else did, not that he knew why he was keeping them. Christmas was over. It was out of style. And that didn't even touch upon the matter of who had given them either. Still, he wore the cardigan sweater. It was comfortable enough.

And now he was standing right before his assigned door, holding his breath before he would dare peer behind it. Mentally preparing himself for the worst, and expecting nothing else. He grasped the handle - one might hear the rattle before he'd even started opening the door. Twist. Push. Eyes closed, half imagining some cesspit for a roaming alligator. Then they blinked open. Blonde. Who was thi-- Oh. Oh no, him.

The last he remembered of him was when he flew out of the ballroom in a rage after-- No. He pulled on the sweater anxiously-- why was he wearing it now? It only served to make things more awkward, he didn't really like this guy, he just--

He stared at the figure on the bed, his expression like he'd just seen a ghost... a ghost that was asking for his photo, causing him to a flash an ever-so-slightly forced and nerve-wrecked smile in his general direction.
"Hi..." He glanced about warily. "...This your room?"

7)--
And then, the rattle of a door, akin to that of a snake's, reached his partially-pierced ears. Vernal paused in his writing, pen still in place as that faithful door opened to reveal none other than . . . the large boy from under the Christmas Tree. Owen. The same boy that he had had a pleasant conversation with-- and yet, the same large boy that had blamed him for the entire scene Richard found, open present and all. Rage flooded upon him once more-- the feeling was still so out of place. Before, his rage was reserved for the candidates and the candidates alone; now, he was almost a loose cannon. The list was becoming more and more important.

Speaking of: 7) OWEN

When looking back up from the Hassliste, the onlooking boy's fear was self-evident. Good. He couldn't resist shooting a glare over to him, swinging his legs off of the bed but never glancing away. He had made that mistake before.

"Ja," he curtly replied, twirling the pen 'round and around in his still-gloved hand. The writing utensil kept slipping-- gloves were horribly impractical while inside, but They weren't letting him take them off. It would ruin the outfit, apparently. And, Owen was still wearing the sweater, 'divine' intervention or not. A second encounter, but the same clothing. Interesting.

"Es ist diener?" the man simply asked back. He was in a proper sitting position now but his expression did not change from its original detestation. The room seemed a bit darker overhead, too . . .

Owen knew, he just knew, in the very instant he caught a glimpse of that unwelcoming glare, that he'd willingly swap it for that cheerful lilac one in a flash, creepy skeletons included. It was an almost instinctual sense - 'this is going to suck'. He hardly noticed the language switch, he'd only caught the sense that Vernal was speaking more oddly than usual. A strange sort of accent that he couldn't quite grasp.

"I-I--" He swallowed his stutter. "Yeah. Yeah it... is..."
And there he stood at the door, waiting for something to happen. He didn't know what it was; perhaps some cheery voice to tell him that this was the wrong room.
But it wasn't.
Stiffening his posture, he strode forwards towards the plain, unused bed. Dumped the rucksack on it, and opened it up, as if to unpack. Not that there was much to unpack.

He clutched the jar of mirror shards by the lid, pulling it up and placing it on the bed, shooting a deliberate look back at the other man.
"So, uh..." Might as well try to initiate conversation. "You're not still mad at me or nuthin', are ya?"

Lost in Translation [roomies] Empty Re: Lost in Translation [roomies]

The man, too, noticed a slight change in the way Owen was talking, a slight difference between his own voice and the boy's-- but, his lingering anger shrugged the questions off. Voices were of no concern right now; he even shut Their thoughts off. No interruptions.

A slight overcast remained above the room, the darkness unexplainable but there regardless. Vernal didn't mind nor cared, continuing to twirl his pen with care. The dump of the ornaments . . . So, he still had them? Not that it mattered, but it was almost flattering. Almost. The unpacking of the mirror shards soon changed such sentiments; in an instant, the man was off from the bed, taking a careful step back from his new roommate. Angstliste-- another list he had to create, one of his fears. Not today, though. The original Hassliste, all the while, remained on the fluffy bed unguarded.

He glanced down at the shards then back at Owen before speaking: "Nein." Not with that horrid weapon there. His glare did not comply with his words, though. "Nein-- ich verzeihet du." Hardly-- but, he would say anything with IT there. He found himself glancing back towards it, knowing that it was a dead giveaway but not being able to help himself. They were all in there, right? There wasn't one lurking up the boy's sleeves, just waiting to embarrass him again?

The pen had stopped spinning; he was just waiting for the theoretical ball to drop.

Lost in Translation [roomies] Empty Re: Lost in Translation [roomies]

Impatient of just pulling stuff out one-by-one, Owen pinched the bottoms of the sack before hoisting it into the air, allowing everything to just tip out all over the bed in some big heap; the sort of heap that presumably, he would not attempt to clean 'til the next time he was forced to pack them away again. Then with a tiresome sigh, he pushed them towards the edge of the bed, and plonked himself down next to it, grabbing the jar of mirror shards and placing it on his lap. He didn't really appear to notice the additional darkness. Maybe a passing cloud had covered the sun. It was no big deal.

Owen almost believed Vernal, that is, until he saw the glare on his face. Then he didn't have a single doubt. The sigh of relief that he'd almost released stayed trapped, and his expression turned dark and wary.
"...Okay. Cool."
The jar in his hand visibly trembled, and his grip tightened to keep it still. Really, what made him think that he could keep such a magical ornament inside such a petty container? He stuffed it underneath his pillow. Out of sight, out of mind.

Then he returned his attention to the man. His room-mate. Ugh, that would take a while to get used to, but he supposed it could've been worse... Right?
He didn't have much to say... Not that he wanted to say anything to him. Perhaps for one thing that he was hesitant about bringing up, that is, until he saw the Hassliste lying on the bed. He craned his neck to try and peer; no words could be read from where he was sitting. "Whassat you were writing?"

The tightening grip forced Vernal back a step more. He could only see it as an open threat, especially as the weapon was tucked underneath its master's pillow. It's message? that he had the shards on hand all the time, even in his sleep. He took a seat back on his own bed, although his gaze never left the boy. After all, the glass was still in his reach. . . .

He frowned at the gaze, knowing in the back of his head that Owen couldn't possibly understand it. It was in German, the large boy wasn't German, and that was that. Still, he couldn't help but shield the paper. It was but something else to add on the concerning list: Humanität. It clouded his judgement, making him perform actions completely unnecessary and even harmful to the cause. Now, Owen would know that the list was important. How stupid of him. He at least needed something better in words rather than actions.

"Einkaufenliste," he managed with a shrug. Good, good. Stay calm-- but, keep the boy's hands in view. Always in view, in case he pulled another mirror trick. Why did he act so foolishly at the New Year's party and not watch for--? He had to press forward, though, spinning the pen once more. "Für Festlandausflugen." It seemed reasonable enough for a list impossible to read. In fact . . .

Out of another impulse, the man formerly known as Disaster picked up the list and tossed it loosely over towards Owen. He couldn't read it-- and, he'd prove to himself that security would hold right now. "Sehen?" Panic flooded over him, but the man held fast in his ever-continued glare. He needed to drown the fear, kill the fear. Burn the fear until there was nothing left but ash.

Post  Owen Mueller Thu Jan 10, 2013 7:17 pm

He raised a brow as he hid the paper, as it were really just an attempt to find something to talk about. Perhaps it was something... personal? A diary? He almost found himself amused at the prospect, but still, it only made him more curious.

Shopping list. Ah. Not as interesting as he hoped. Then again, he could still be lying through his teeth.
He didn't seem to notice his attentiveness to his hands; they weren't even doing anything, and they certainly weren't prepared to catch the list as it was thrown. They fumbled with it haphazardly before he finally managed to clap it between them. He eagerly turned it over to read what sort of rubbish Vernal was buying.

Except he couldn't.
What language was this...? German? He frowned as the realisation came to him. "You've been talking German this entire time, haven't you." It wasn't even phrased like a question - he already knew. He squinted in an attempt to make out the words as he travelled down the list, but was unable to discern anyway. Useless list. Put in a different language just so that he couldn't---
Then he stopped. He looked up at Vernal, his expression genuinely baffled. Then he raised it up to show him.
"Why's my name on this?"
His stare at Vernal demanded some sort of explanation.

Lost in Translation [roomies] Empty Re: Lost in Translation [roomies]

Post  Vernal Equinox Fri Jan 11, 2013 10:49 pm

The confusion set his mind at ease. See? Nothing to worry about. Stupid Humanität, worrying him for nothing-- but Owen's 'question' soon changed the calm, warping his complacent grin to plain confusion. No. No, that was impossible. He was speaking English, just like he always had. "Nein." And yet, the more he focused on his own words, the more the large boy's made sense. "Ich spreche Englisch; ich kenne Deutsch, und das ist--" it. That was Deutsch-- German. He swallowed back the horror. Whatever he did, he was not showing fear to this boy. He was never allowing such feelings to go up to the light of day ever again.

With a little help from Up There, his face curled into a sly grin. The light failed to reach his eyes, though, and the overcast of the room remained. It was false but better than the alternative.

"Bravo," he forced, although the word was completely unnatural, 'foreign.' He hated that; another one for the list. "Wie--" He forced other words to come out instead, slowly and dragging. "How did you figure it out?" Make it sound like a game. Make it sound purposeful, not a mistake. Above all else, keep an eye on Owen's hands. . . .

As for the name, his smile could only broaden. Make it a joke.
"Sklavemarket?" he suggested with a shrug, not caring for the buying of humans but not denying its finer points, either, whatever 'finer points' there were. Keep smiling. Laugh it all off with a well-place chuckle. Never let anything affect you.

Now that he was actually listening out to Vernal's words, he could make out the distinction. Definitely not English. How didn't he notice before? Perhaps he'd went with the assumption that mostly everybody spoke some sort of English, and that he had no reason to suspect anything else. It mattered little. He'd understand it anyway.

If only that little power applied to reading though. If only.

"Yeah, right," he agreed, rolling his eyes in a blatant portrayal of how much he didn't agree. He was smirking, however, and Owen's almost instinctual aversion to smirks set off his alarms again. And he wondered; why was he speaking a different language? And how did he know that he would understand? It... didn't make sense.
"Cause this is written in it." He waved the sheet around. "And your voice sounded funny." He didn't particularly support that notion - Vernal's English sounded stranger than the German now.

Ha ha. Owen didn't laugh once at the joke. His expression simply turned fouler than what it was. Slave market. Yeah. "Funny," he said.
Then he clutched the paper in his hands, tightly enough so that it'd wrinkle slightly. Then he tore it apart into two halves, both of which he allowed to slowly float to the floor.

Lost in Translation [roomies] Empty Re: Lost in Translation [roomies]

Post  Vernal Equinox Thu Jan 17, 2013 12:57 am

He didn't notice the eye-roll; all of his focus remained on the hands regardless of any other movement. He had to make sure the mirror shards weren't in play. He couldn't-- he wouldn't suffer such embarrassment again. He was determined, so the outcome was determined. He watched with a slipped frown as the paper was ripped into halves, never at the paper itself falling to the floor but rather the remaining actors of the rip. It was hardly irreparable. The smile returned quickly enough as Vernal forced his eyes back up to the boy's face. They were still stormy, eerily like the midst of a tornado. The list could be repaired; the original grudge still lingered, though.

"It is," he agreed with odd pronunciation, biting his tongue afterwards to shake off the accent. How long had he had this? How long had he been speaking in Deutsch-- German? He could figure that out later, though, when not in the midst of a conversation. Slowly, the English got better. Slowly. He sounded each word out with deliberate care and placement.

"Vhat I am wondering is . . . How did you understand?" Owen wasn't German or Austrian or any other country he was aware that spoke the tongue (then again, he tended to ignore mainland Europe on principle). The way he described it also sounded odd. 'Funny?' Did he have that heavy of an accent, or. . . ?

He glanced down at the paper on impulse. Humanität again. Before he could stop himself, the words slipped out in a flash: "Und, wie ist mein Akzent 'lustig'?" Forget the previous lists of Hassliste and Angstliste-- this was just annoying.

Stop... staring.
Owen had been rather tolerant through this little meeting, but the way that Vernal was looking at him was becoming increasingly unnerving. Needless to say, he didn't appreciate it, and he didn't return the stare. He just looked at a spot vaguely above his roommate's head.

Now the question. Owen himself wasn't so certain how it worked; he just knew that he had it. Vernal was in the dark about those sorts of details, and the boy quickly saw an opportunity to boast. He straightened his pose, adopting a forcibly suave smirk. "Guess you don't really know that much about me."
Ah, so mysterious. He managed to impress himself.

The difference between when Vernal spoke English or German was becoming more evident to his ears. Not only was he starting to hear actual German words, but it sounded that much more fluent and smooth. The English words felt unnatural. Forced. He was confident that he'd not be caught by surprise by it again.

"Just sounds weird," he shrugged. Well, of course it did, he'd never actually met anyone who spoke German before.

He stood, turning away from him. Might as well check out this new room. Slowly, he strolled towards the door near where he'd entered, swinging it open. Restroom. Okay. He closed it again, disinterested, before glancing back towards Vernal. "Oh, yeah, and cut out the staring," he grumbled, not looking at him.

He really didn't know much about Owen. He wanted to, though-- he needed to. Information was just as key Down Here as Up There. It was a necessity, a means for survival when one wrong word could shove you down into a corner of neglect--!

"Na klar-- wir haben gerade erst kennen gelernt," he returned, scolding himself afterwards with the dig of a nail into skin. He needed to use Deutsch-- German-- no, English! He needed to use English! He needed to prove Richard wrong! But, that was wrong, wasn't it? He needed to prove himself wrong, most of all. He needed to prove that he had control over the words. . . .

He watched the boy carefully, completely ignoring what the opened room contained. It really didn't matter, so long as that accursed looking-glass wasn't in there . . . Was Owen's power connected to only the shards in the jar or to any and all mirrors? All the more reason not to look; his stormy eyes kept staring directly at Owen's face and hands, not bothering with any sort of cover-up in the continuous action. The demand, therefore, did not surprise him. That didn't mean he would obey, however.

"No," he stated simply, making sure that his pronunciation was as fluent as possible with mixed results. It was better than before, at least-- it could be better still. He got comfortable on his bed once more, his eyes never leaving the roommate. Stop staring-- what for? So that he could be embarrassed yet again?

The ceiling overhead rumbled slightly.

Was this guy ever going to decide whether he was going to speak German or English? It wasn't that the switch made it any more difficult to understand, but it was bizarre how often he switched. Perhaps just to annoy him? It would not surprise him.

Then he stopped.
'No'.
...What the?
Slowly, he turned his head around, peering over his shoulder at Vernal to be met with with that constant stare. He couldn't help but choke slightly.
"Dude, seriously, no. That's creepy as heck." He scrunched his face as a thought arrived to him, the sort of thought that he didn't plan on confessing out loud for the sheer wrongness of it.

The creepiness soon came in a different flavour at the noise from the floor below them. Owen had been prepared to complain about noisy neighbours, before recalling that this was the second floor and that nobody actually lived up there. ...Odd.

He glared back at Vernal. "Do you have a crush on me or something? Stop it."
With that, he turned towards the other unexplored door in the corner of the room.

Creepy? Good. Perhaps being 'creepy' would prevent the use of that accursed mirror. And so, he shrugged. It was Owen's next remark, though, that caused a chortle-- and soon, full-on laughter.

"Ich kenne nicht für dich 'schwārmen!' Gott verbieten--!" It was so stupid an idea! He truly only had eyes for Ambrose-- something which, somehow, someway, the mirror knew about. His eyes never left Owen, not for a second during the tirade. Finally, though, the giggles faded, Vernal recovering his composure at long, long last. He cleared his throat, realizing only now that laughing might not have been the most polite thing to do. Oh, well . . .

He kept staring. No need to stop now. The man leaned around the corner, keep both eyes on the roommate. Mirrors, mirrors . . . Where did the power stop? Where did it begin? So many unanswered questions! He could hear Their snickers even now, telling of the secrets They knew. If only he was Up There again-- no, he couldn't afford to think like that. Vernal kept himself focused on the hands. Perhaps even more than a necessity, it was a distraction onto itself. Sanity.

The snappy comeback was intended to make Vernal at least embarrassed enough to stop his incessant staring, but the laughter, he found, was heavily more obnoxious. He groaned, slapping his forehead, before dragging his hand down his face. Staring impatiently as his unwanted room-mate finally quieted, he raised a brow. "You done yet?"

Without awaiting nor particularly desiring an answer, he resumed looking through the second room. He swung open the door, peering inside. Bigger. Empty. It could probably be used as a sort of storage space, and extra room, or even a very large, extensive wardrobe. He closed it. It didn't matter anyway, he wasn't staying here.

He turned back towards the bed.
"Hey, come here."
At first it might seem like he were addressing the only other occupant in the room, but he was looking towards the pillow. It took a moment to react, but then there was a distinct rrrrip, before shards suddenly started emerging from a small tear in the pillow, floating into the air, with fluffs of feathers following afterwards. Frowning at his now slightly damaged cushion, he turned his attention towards the mirror shards as they assembled before him, forming a seamless, complete mirror.
He glanced to Vernal. Well, there was obviously little progress with the staring; he just didn't care anymore. "Where'd you think's a good place to hang this?" he quite casually asked.

Lost in Translation [roomies] Empty Re: Lost in Translation [roomies]

Post  Vernal Equinox Fri Feb 08, 2013 1:49 am

The question was answered with a smug shake of the head. "Nein, nein~" Who would? No; he would keep this nugget of teasing for himself and for a very, very long time. Not as long as he would have originally intended, of course.

He really needed to switch back to Englisch-- ENGLISH-- soon, but not now. Not when he could get away with Deutsch so easily. A weight had been lifted off of his mind that had been there for so long he had forgotten its existence entirely. Now that it had dissipated, though . . . A native language. He had forgotten the joy in it.

The man fidgeted in his plush seat as Owen returned within sight. Ahh, he wanted to know what was there! He could always look later, but he had the desire now, the wanting now, of all times. It took all he had to not demand a description or to see for himself, especially with Owen's prompting--

Not for him. For the shards.

As the bits of glass whirrled past Vernal . . . What did happen at such a juncture? His mind went blank with the mere sight of them, his worst fears realized in the most casual way possible. Embarrassment. It was nearing, it was coming, it was fast approaching with no defense, not even a proper hurricane at his beck and call.

The man's face was a perfect portrait of absolute horror. At least the smile remained with effort by Laughter. It didn't help; horror turned to hysteria.
He had to get a grip.
He was better than this. Could be better than this. Should be better than . . .

"I-ich kenne nicht?" he managed barely, a bead of sweat dripping from his brow.

Lost in Translation [roomies] Empty Re: Lost in Translation [roomies]

Owen wasn't really thinking much of Vernal's reaction, glancing about the room for a good place to hang it. He usually wouldn't be quite so fussy with the exact position - anywhere on his side was good enough. But annoyingly, he found himself considering the possibility of inadvertently giving his roommate another angle to stare at him at.

It wasn't Vernal's words that caught his attention again, but the way they were uttered. Was he... nervous? A glance confirmed his suspicions - it was written plainly on his face like an open book. At first, he was confused - was it the mirror? Did the power surprise him? But Owen could've sworn that he had seen it at work before, and just couldn't suss out why he was reacting that way.
...Unless...
...Maybe he was... scared?

As the seed of evil scheming was planted in his mind, a wide, uncharacteristic smirk grew on his face. He had to see. He just had to.
"You know... I think it would look good... somewhere over there."
With a light gesture of his hand, the mirror drifted slowly forth, before planting itself on the wall. That is, the wall directly adjacent to Vernal's very bed.

He didn't like that smirk. Not at all.
Still, what else could he do? Smile away, Vernal, smile away . . . Owen would eventually leave him alone. Yes. He would just keep watching the mirror and keep his cool and be better than this--

The suggested placement was what made him finally snap. The mere idea was simply too much.
But because he was mortal, Laughter's wanted effect still took hold. Panic with a smile.
Hysteria.

"Nein, nein, nein-- ich nicht wird-- kannst nicht--!"
Zu hyperventilieren; that was the phrase. He couldn't breathe, couldn't move, and yet he wanted to will himself so badly, so badly, to change it. What was wrong with him? They were just shards of glass, small fragments of a reflection, a reflection that could shift into the darling and humiliate him again--! It was too late, though; Vernal's eyes had already locked with the supposed mirror's, that accursed mirror's--

And yet, he wanted to see Ambrose. He couldn't see him here, not when he was so worried the right questions would be asked: why he was here, what was he doing. Why did he bleed. And so, he had to content himself by watching afar . . . No longer. Again, the image of the bloody Ambrose smiled back at him, his smirk as twisted as the last time. His shoes more stained than the last time. It . . . It was beautiful. He was beautiful.

"Entropie," he exhaled and smiled, all doubts fading. The mirror couldn't be that bad, could it? It showed Entropy, after all. And, Entropy was . . . The darling was--!

He just wanted to see if Vernal would freak out. It would be funny - he was practically an adult, and Owen still saw himself as a kid, really. He didn't attempt to disguise his chuckle at his rather obvious moment of panic.

But it didn't continue from there. His 'room-mate' was staring at the mirror and... Was he smiling? His amusement fading, he squinted, trying to see just what Vernal was ogling. He wouldn't be surprised if it were his own reflection, the narcissistic ass--

Red hair. Ah, it wasn't hard to guess. His eyes flicked a few times between the man and the mirror, wearing a frown. For a joke, it wasn't as funny as he wanted it to be.
"You can do worse than that," he scoffed. He was addressing the mirror, fully intending it to show something horrid - he just didn't know what.

Vernal's eyes were on the mirror and mirror alone, the altered reflection turning slowly around with a smirk, lifting up the stained plastic fork in precious victory--

And then, it twisted. The image of the darling, of Ambrose, of Entropy, revealed itself to have only one arm. The left was gone, replaced by an unpercieveable gap, a bloody stump, a small edge of white in the middle and around the horried sight--! The smirk faded. Bags appeared underneath the darling eyes. He looked tired, worn, so wrong, so wrong . . . The lack of air returned; the man struggled for air, he struggled for a grasp on reality. This wasn't real, this wasn't real--

"Nicht echt . . . Nicht echt--"

-- but, it didn't matter. The darling was hurt, pernamently maimed, and he was powerless to do anything. His worst nightmare laid before him. The being formerly known as Disaster scrambled away, perching on top the multitude of pillows. The soft ledge was all he had left.

"--nicht echt, nicht echt--!"

His shoulders shook. His eyes stung.
The mirror certainly 'did worse.'

Lost in Translation [roomies] Empty Re: Lost in Translation [roomies]

How far was 'too far', exactly? And why was he trying to push that mysterious limit? Owen could answer neither of those questions, and honestly, with just the slightest grain of guilt, he didn't really care to. It was power that he ultimately felt at his fingertips. This jackass had it coming. He was a creep, and he was trying to piss him off, and now he was getting what he deserved at the hands of Owen himself. Justice.

Despite this, even Owen could see that he was reacting... pretty badly. Such a thought became redundant the moment the older man scrambled away. Exactly what was he seeing anyway? Yet, seeing the man there, pathetically cowering... Maybe he'd done enough.

With a gesture of his hand, he beckoned the floating mirror towards him, before aiming an innocent, uncharacteristic smile in Vernal's direction.
"Somethin' wrong?"

The nightmare neared, inching closer and closer as the darling's face aged before him--
wrinkles, sagging skin, eyes that have see too much--
he had already seen too much--
too much--!

He was no longer capable of words.
Owen's question was lost on him, regardless.

The man attempted to scramble up the pillow mound more, up the safehold and towards a peaceful place-- but, to no avail. He wasn't Up There. He could never be Up There again, could he? Of course he could, though, of course he could-- he just had to work harder. He always had to work harder. But, with the darling staring down, the darling's face, the darling's precious, precious face staring down at him, glaring down at him through the reflection, demanding this to be changed--

but, it was! He tried to snap himself back to reality, shaking his head back and forth, back and forth. Ambrose would never age! Snap out of it, snap out of it! He began to bite his tounge over and over again, pulling at any piercings he had remaining. Snap out of it! He was better than this, so much better than the large boy and his shards-- but, the shards. They remained.

His breathing was too jagged, too fast, too violent.
He couldn't think any more-- think! Keep pulling! Eventually, he would snap out of it. Eventually . . .

...Okay. The longer he stared, the longer that Owen was figuring out that this wasn't just Vernal being a wuss like he thought. This was something more like a panic attack.
But still, he struggled with the thought of actually caring. He just... didn't. If anything, this was comeuppance. He couldn't start feeling bad for people who did crap to him could he?

But he allowed the mirror to float away from the man anyway, directing it with his hand towards the other side of the room, where it would then firmly plant itself against the wall.

Slowly, he swaggered towards the frightened man, both hands raised in a display that he had nothing else up his sleeves.
"Jeez, calm down." His tone was condescending, as if he were talking down to a child. "The mirror's gone, okay? S'not gonna hurt ya."
He couldn't stop the unimpressed sneer from appearing on his face.

He couldn't breathe, HE COULDN'T BREATHE--
he struggled to remember how--
the walls were closing in--
pull of an earring--
blurry walls--

gone.

It . . . It was gone. The mirror was gone--! Was Ambrose okay, though? Was Ambrose safe, unlike in that horrid reflection? He wanted to know. He wanted to run out of the room that very instant and check on the darling-- but, reality set in once more. He couldn't see him. He would ask questions, questions he didn't want to answer . . .

That, and he didn't trust Owen. Not with that smirk.
"N-nicht verletzt?" he managed to ask through still-panicked breathing. Of course it had hurt him! What did this boy think, that mentally scarring someone didn't hurt? That showing them their worst fears and beyond would not have any consequence? What was the boy doing, trying to prove a point--?

. . . Oh.
That's how it felt. That first time with Richard . . .
He slumped down onto the pillows, his panic still there but muted by raw realization. This is how it felt, then: to strangle someone would couldn't be choked.

(( *so proud of Vernie right now* ))
