"No," he said, raising a brow. Of course, he was referring to the physical damage that it could've caused, and clearly didn't. He hadn't for a moment considered the mental damage. In fact, 'scaring' didn't even really qualify as 'hurting' at all.
Well, unless he gave him a heart attack or something.

And admittedly, Vernal seemed as if he were quite close to having one. What was giving him such a fright anyway? He turned away to face the mirror on the opposite wall, squinting his eyes at what he saw. Even with the frightfully altered appearance, he recognised the tell-tale hair right away. Ambrose.
"Are you kidding me?"
The words escaped accidentally as he glanced it over. Sure, it was... kinda gross. No, really gross. But it wasn't traumatising, surely. It was disconcerting to see his friend all aged, but Vernal's reaction was... Well, the mirror could've done far worse.

He glanced back to him now, his expression a muddled disbelief. He couldn't really understand... anything. This guy was incredibly emotional over the other boy, which was unsettling in of itself. And Owen couldn't even tell whether he was enjoying the power he held over him now. The power of knowing what shook him to his core.
Could he even use this as blackmail? It felt downright rotten, even Owen knew that, but yet the thought lodged in his mind, an evil seed was planted. He wouldn't use it on a whim, no. Perhaps when he was really pissing him off, or... Self defence. All within reason.

But first, a curiosity would have to be settled. He jerked his finger over his shoulder at the mirror. "Why'd that scare you so much?"
Mentally, he prepared himself for some sob story.

Lost in Translation [roomies] - Page 2 Empty Re: Lost in Translation [roomies]

Post  Vernal Equinox Sat Mar 09, 2013 12:38 pm

He was still breathing hard, but at least he was breathing. He was beginning to remember how . . . In, out. In, out. It was so simple, it was forgettable. He couldn't forget it, though, not unless he wanted the walls to close in once more. In, out.

The question was appalling in more ways that one. The boy saw--! and, the boy didn't care. Owen's slipped words baffled him to no end. He cared about the darling; what other reason did he require? With the jerked finger and follow-up question, Vernal's eyes drifted towards the reflection once more . . .

Still old.
Still ragged.
Still nothing he could do. Just a reflection, not real, nicht echt . . .
A pull of an earring, not hard enough to rip through but providing plenty of pain for a jolt, for a kick. For a wake-up call. The man struggled to find words clear enough to express his love, words that even the large boy would understand underneath all of that apathy.

"Ich . . ." He cleared his throat. It was harder to focus on the 'other' words, but: "I love him.

I . . . vant to protect him. Ich sehen ihm like that . . . is schwierig. Is hard. I kann nicht help."

Simple as that.

He slid down from the pillow perch, from the pseudo-cloud perch, and awkwardly looked back at the mirror. He was able to detach himself from the image now, but . . .
"Bitte . . ." Even a false Ambrose in such a condition was hard to bear. "Take it away?"

His eyebrows raised with surprise. Wait... What? Was it... really? He frowned, the look on his face equivalent to that of regret. Of someone who sorely didn't want to be here, listening to these words. Someone who was sorely wishing that they were actually listening to this the wrong way, and that Vernal wasn't really like that.

Needless to say, it seemed quite hopeless.

"Wow, man..." He scrunched his eyebrows. "That's so gay."
Poor Ambrose. Did he have to deal with this guy? It seemed like he wanted to help him, but... Owen couldn't help but find him extraordinarily creepy. It was just so unsettling to be sharing a room with him right now.
It took Owen a few seconds to realise that he was actually backing away from him, and he managed to stop himself. Okay. He really wanted Rein back. He was a gangly, creepy doofus, but he was more tolerable at least.

Take it away? Hah. There was no getting rid of the mirror, Owen knew that. It always came back. He could pretend that it didn't exist for a while, but then it'd be sitting in front of his face, waiting for him to notice him again. Kind of like an annoying kid that just wanted attention all the time.
However, he couldn't be bothered explaining this to Vernal, he didn't seem in any state for logical reasoning. Besides, Owen just really wanted him to stop freaking out right now.

"Sure." He plucked the mirror off the wall, and tucked it under his arm, the shiny edge facing away from Vernal. He could just command it, but he wanted to go for simplicity right now. Swaggering towards the window, he pushed it open, before sliding the mirror through. It fell, landing on the ground far below him. It didn't break - it never would.

He dusted off his hands, before shutting the window, turning back to face Vernal.
"Now. You gonna stop being a pansy?"

Lost in Translation [roomies] - Page 2 Empty Re: Lost in Translation [roomies]

The boy said it as if it was a bad thing.

Vernal had come to terms with his sexuality years ago under the unique freedom being one of Them provided. It was difficult at first, yes, with the early thoughts towards the 'horrid Homosexuelle.' No children were produced when people loved others of the same sex. No soldiers were created that way. Even when understanding the mechanical hatred, though, getting used to the fact that he might be one of them-- a different them, a them he had previously avoided like the plauge-- was difficult. So difficult. He had tried to force himself on women, embarrassingly enough, tried to get himself to act like the proper man previously expected of him. It never worked. He could never do it, and even if he had succeeded . . . it would have been empty. Pointless.

And so, he accepted; and so, the man shrugged off Owen's 'insult' with practiced grace, calming down with such a typical statement. It was gay. It was gay, and he was perfectly okay with that.

An overwhelming wave of relief passed over Vernal as the mirror was finally turned away. Finally! Get rid of the Ambrose he could not help-- not that he could help the real one right now. The reflection was only a constant reminder of such things.

The large boy's next question grated on the man. A bubi? He frowned and scooted away from the pillows, settling back down in the middle of the bed. The sheets underneath were all wrinkled at this point.
"Vat does that machen du, then? A walross?"

It felt bizarre not having the mirror right there next to him, even if he was assured that he would get it back. What if it didn't come back, anyway? What would he do?
He wasn't in the right mind to worry about it now, especially with Vernal to deal with. As he came out with his disgustingly accented insult, his expression twisted into that of utter offence.

"Oh, yeah, you wanna play it that way?"
He wasn't playing games any more. Swaggering up towards the man, his arms held wide apart, he addressed the man with a furious sneer. "Hit me, then."

He stuck his face in front of Vernal's, still wearing that unfriendly smirk.
"Gimme your best shot."

Considering that Vernal make the retort in the first place, he certainly did want to play it that way. A fight. It was crude, but efficient. Sparks jumped out of the man's frizzy hair, the previously slicked-back hairs now springing back into action. Ah, well; such things couldn't last forever.

He slowly got up from the bed, eyes on Owen the entire time. Prepped for an open assault . . . Fein, warum nicht? With hardly a warning from the man and with a matched grin, Vernal aimed a slap upside Owen's head. He wanted to get rid of that smile once and for all.

What was that? He flinched back slightly as he looked to the man's head. No. Hair didn't do that. He thought it looked ridiculous, but he was too in the moment to laugh at it.

However, it did succeed in distracting him. The slap took him by surprise - knocking his head up, causing him to splutter unceremoniously as he staggered backwards. He rubbed his lip with the back of his wrist, scowling at the man. At the very least, no, he wasn't smiling any more.

"A slap?!" he scoffed. "Are you a girl or something?"
With a grunt, he strode forwards, and swung his foot forwards, aiming to hit just where his precious jewels were in what had to make his statement the most hypocritical one of the year.

It was clean shot, at least. Too clean-- there was pain, but no blood. He pouted at such an absence, unsure of what Owen's words afterwards suggested. Not really a feminist, was he? "Your point--?"

He saw the kick a second too late-- or, rather, heard about. Faintly, his mental ears picked up on The Powers That Be and their various cheers at the dirty move, his only warning. Too late, though. Too late to block, at least.

This was going to hurt, regardless; he might as well make it hurt for Owen, too. He took a quick breath in, electricity flowing out of his hair and resting juuuuuust above his skin. A tricky placement, but he could do it. He would do it. The kick landed and he saw stars, keeling over from the knees onto the hard ground. His only comfort was the electric jolt Owen surely received in the process.

When his foot managed to connect with the target, the last thing he expected some some sort of retaliation... from that same spot. There wasn't enough time to feel that smug sense of satisfaction before the jolt snapped at his foot. The electricity coursed up his leg and down the other in a brief moment of painful discomfort.

With a shriek, he staggered backwards, eventually just losing his balance and falling on his behind. "What the f..." he panted, brushing a hand through hair that had suddenly become rather wiry and springy. He didn't know what shocked him more - the electricity or the fact he hadn't anticipated it at all.

He stared at Vernal, his jaw half gaped, and almost frightened.

The shriek was barely audible-- there were still stars, still so much pain, spots of color, loss of breath-- but, the noise made it all worth his while. He wasn't able to breathe for a solid minute, but when he finally was able to-- oh, sweet relief!-- the exhale came out as a chuckle. A hoarse but definite chuckle.

"Hab dich," he managed, the triumphant grin on his face clear.
Everyone was stunned into silence, the Powers That Be included. The scene was still funny, yes, still very amusing, but it was not longer at the price of Vernal's pride. He was kicked, he was very much in pain . . . but, he was smiling. It angered Them, annoyed Them to no end. He should be suffering, but the man was taking it in stride. He wasn't acting like a man. He was still acting like Them.

He wanted to see Owen's face properly, but he was still occupied with the stars. Later, perhaps. He wouldn't let the Walross forget.

Lost in Translation [roomies] - Page 2 Empty Re: Lost in Translation [roomies]

Owen simply stared, weirded out. No. No no no no. Why wasn't he curled up on the floor, crying his girly eyes out? Why was he laughing? His remark added insult to quite a literal injury, and Owen didn't even have the tat to come back with something better.

Well, maybe he hadn't hit it right; which didn't seem possible, but then again, neither did this beast of nature. With a groan, he looked to his foot, inspecting where he'd been shocked. It was sore to the touch, and felt red hot, but didn't seem like the kind of injury that needed treating. Not that he would get it treated anyway...

With that, he returned his attention to his 'roommate'. His stare became seething and openly hateful. "You.... You bitch," he growled, his voice resembling an animal's more than a human's. He stood to both feet. "I'm gunna--!"

...Well, what was he 'gunna' do? Kick him again? Like that worked out.
Then he remembered.

He stepped forwards slowly and awkwardly. "The Mirror ain't gone. I still got it. One more thing, and I'll cut you up."
Owen didn't consider himself the violent, brutish kind of person. He enjoyed staying out of conflicts exactly like these. But there was something, a part of him, that burned with fury at his every essence. Part of him that wanted revenge. Part of him that actually stood a chance.

The pain receded just enough to fully appreciate Owen's snarls. Vernal wasn't surprised at the turn; men were not far from animals, after all (and, for the large boy, never a feminist). The Powers That Be in all of Their watching knew this well, he most of all. It was good entertainment, at least. The man was sure such growling made for wonderful facial expressions, but alas, the floor was his safest bet for not passing out. Best not to move for a while. The grin remained, though, along with his triumph. He hoped the foot to be black and dead.

Vernal actually had to think about whether or not the 'threat' was a threat at all; he could barely see, so the darling in the looking glass wasn't going to be visible. He had sustained far more painful injuries than mere cuts-- the kick proved that much-- but the tone with the words . . . Men were not far from animals; they were worse. He knew that better than anyone, Them included.

. . . He had to stop thinking about this.

"Wie viel?" Vernal couldn't help but ask, the grin still there but not as prominent-- more cautious than anything else. The large boy could cause serious damage if he took too much advantage. "Wie tief?"

The smile didn't cease, and annoyingly so. It was like all of Owen's rivals were incapable of admitting some sort of defeat. They were so stubborn, he'd found. What did he have to do? How far did he have to push it? Did they have to be bruised and bloodied and motionless on the floor, just like he had been? Or was even that not enough?

"All over your fucking body," he said, allowing his words to sink in with his loathsome stare. His fist tensed, and he took a sudden step forward, as if he were about to launch into another assault. But it stopped there.

He stood back, feeling that he had made his message clear. If Vernal was going to start something, Owen would stop it - stop him - before he got the chance. And through whatever means necessary. He wasn't going to be trampled.

He turned away from him, as if contemplating an exit... But he'd stay just to hear Vernal's comeback.

That wasn't very specific, now was it? Vernal pouted a little but let the smile fade; the large boy was serious. He tested the movement of a hand, making sure he could move again before forcing himself up from the floor, using his arms underneath as a prop. He was at last able to see Owen's glare; it was worth the effort. Hatred was billowing all over him. Vernal himself managed to keep a neutral gaze, flinching only slightly at the approach. He had dealt with worse, after all. As stupid as it was to keep remembering that, it was also comforting to know how much worse everything could be.

It was front. A very good one, mind, but still a front.

Vernal studied Owen's retreat carefully, making sure he understood the other's action. They were done? After so much build-up, it seemed unlikely. He had to ask: "Ist das dein schlimmsten?"

Lost in Translation [roomies] - Page 2 Empty Re: Lost in Translation [roomies]

Post  Owen Mueller Fri May 24, 2013 8:22 pm

The question pricked him like a needle. Was that really the worst he could do? Owen silently seethed, finding himself, inadvertently between a rock and a hard place. Leave, and be a coward. Stay, and endure this unbearable company for longer.

Owen knew what he wanted. In any circumstance, he would just continue on his way and be out. Why bother with this meaningless conflict? He didn't enjoy being the heart of it, no. He wanted to stay away from these things. Many days, he just wanted to return to his room and collapse, and let himself forget about the world. Forget about enemies or worries or failures. To just let himself exist in a sweet, blissful moment of nothingness.

Owen wouldn't turn back. Owen wouldn't spit back a pissed "Say that to my face!" And Owen wouldn't run and aim another sharp kick to the grounded man's ribs while he was down. He wouldn't do any of that.

But that was exactly what he did. An impulse he simply could not pacify.

Gladly: "Ist that your vurst?" And in accented English, no less. The pain had finally receded enough. He was actually interested in Owen's answer, refusing to smile at the subject-- but not, of course when the answer was just another assault. Again, Their voices warned him.

Again, it was too late. There was no way to move properly in his state unless scuttling slowly like a crab counted. Before he could try, though, the attack landed. Just like the first kick, Vernal lost his ability to breathe, except this time, all prior air escaped him, as well. It was a second of asphyxiation. His arms gave out with the force; Vernal fell back to his prior state on the floor. Air returned but nothing else--

Pfft, look at that!
Get up, DISASTER. Oh, wait, you lost that title.
Rather pathetic, don't you think?

--except a smile on his face. It obviously irritated Owen, so why not? Irritation was a weapon he could use well enough.

"Kläglich," he managed, disappointed with the fall back to German but not about to show that to the large boy. Not now when he was winning.

After his foot met with the man's chest, he stood back to observe the results. Smiling. Still smiling. It was as if he didn't make a difference - it was as if he couldn't make a difference.

Further. He had to go further. Smash his skull open, pop his eyeballs out, split his jaw off and---

No. What was he doing? Look at this man, still trying to cling onto some sort of hope even through the punishment. So badly, he wanted to find a way to wipe off that smug, to silence him from making any more of those taunting remarks. But Owen was frozen now, simply staring at the man, not even able to conjure up any emotion in his features. It wasn't Vernal he was looking at. It wasn't an enemy. It was a reflection.

And perhaps, that was exactly why he should've continued kicking.

But he just stopped. No more. No more.
He turned, and started to run towards the door. He was done with this.

Vernal continued to stare at the boy just as he always had, his smile remaining in but a sliver on the face. Him having no real reaction was odd-- where was the rage of before? Go on, he wanted to egg. Scream, stomp, let your blood boil. It was only when the large boy started running away that he realized what the lack meant: victory. He won.

The smile immediately faded with the movement; the Powers knew his usual act, so there was no one to wear it for anymore. He suppressed the pain, though, a surfacing grimace being replaced by careful study. Curious, seltsam. Owen had shown that he didn't lack the tendency to do physical harm, but to show restraint now instead of before or all together was fascinating. Of course, it was his victory, regardless, but he would like to know how he won for future reference. Perhaps gain a streak.

Go after him, you idiot!
Fight some more--!

He let the walross run, though. There was no need to continue on, and it was better to let things smooth over. After all, they still had to be roommates-- and, he could hardly run in this condition. Not that They needed to know that bit . . .
