A Mournful Loss Empty A Mournful Loss

Post  Tony Sharp Wed Jan 30, 2013 11:18 pm

Days had passed since the wrecking.

Tony had spent the last few days pent up his room, residing in a pot by the bay window. There was little company to be had, save for the occasional visit of a young rat girl. He'd gaze out towards the foreboding weather, that is, if he were capable. Unfortunately, recent circumstances had left him a little worse for wear. That is, he'd been crushed and blinded by a falling block.

As days passed, his condition gradually improved. Limbs which had been too weak to even hold him up were now standing - shakily, but independently. Movement became easier, and he was regaining dexterity. And, most importantly, the darkness that had clouded his vision was slowly beginning to lift. He could finally see the white outside. However, evidence of the nasty incident remained clear on his visage - some parts still seemed just a bit too twisted and gangly, and his head, despite the return of his eyes, still seemed unshapely and crooked. His overall poise was drooped, as if lacking the energy to stand up straight.

It was a morning when he finally decided to venture out into the world outside the door, and observe the... supposed damage for himself. He'd seen nothing of it save for the split second that he looked up before he was flattened. It played on his mind like a stuck record, as well as Audi's and the other girl's words. A bit untidy, one had said. It can be cleaned up, said the other. Just how bad was it...?
Removing his feet from the pot, he had to pause to steady himself, before leaving the room.

Trailing towards the library, he didn't know what to expect when he pressed open the door on the second floor. The first thing he saw was the balcony on the opposite side of the room, untouched and safe. Oh, good. Relaxing, he continued forwards, before the ceiling finally caught his glimpse.
A huge, gaping maw of wooden planks and beams.
He froze at the sight. No no no, it was horrendous-- but what of the floor below it? Hurriedly, he rushed towards the banister, before peering through the gaps in the poles.

A mess. A complete mess. Although it was far from the wreck that it had been, it was far from Tony's impression of 'a bit untidy'. Amongst the cleaning figures, rubble lay strewn about the lower floor, and huge chunks of clock mechanisms remained still. As for the bookcases... the less said the better; similarly crushed, with... remains of books stacked aside.
"No..." He gripped the banisters like prison bars as he sank to his knees. "No no no no no...!"
It can be cleaned, it can be cleaned, he tried to remind himself. But all he could do was stare in despair.
Something had been invariably lost.

A Mournful Loss Empty Re: A Mournful Loss

He had to admit, he cared less that he, perhaps, should have. But having seen four centuries, Richard had witnessed the gradual withering and destruction of artifacts greater than a few old tomes. As far as he was aware, the castle did not have any unique, priceless books within it, so it really didn't matter much in the long run - it was no Library of Alexandria. It could have been worse. Nobody died.

Still, he felt compelled to help out in the cleaning efforts, perhaps because unfortunate circumstances caused him to be not present on the Island when the weird happenings and the collapse occurred. He doubted he would be able to change the course of events, but some unreasonable guilt lingered regardless, and so in an effort to appease it he put away his pride and set to work alongside others. Reluctantly, he had to admit that it being remains of Kale's room might have had something to do with him helping as well.

It had been a while since his vampire strength actually saw any use, so having some exercise turned out to be actually quite pleasant, despite the amount of dust and dirt he had to suffer. He was wearing a loose, checkered, off-red flannel shirt with the sleeves rolled up and a pair of well-worn old jeans, his hair collected into a ridiculous-looking tiny ponytail at the back of his head. An outfit that nobody on the Island had seen him wearing before. It felt somewhat amusing.

Wiping his palms on the trousers, he entered through the door on the second floor, an empty sack slung over his shoulder, having dumped its contents - rubble - outside the castle. He was about to descend the stairs to collect another portion of debris when a tiny, hunched figure caught his eye. Was it... It was. Richard hesitated for a second, then slowly, silently, walked up to behind the librarian, not wanting to disturb what was obviously a moment of despair. Poor creature... He seemed more broken than the building itself.

Richard cleared his throat, audibly but quietly enough to be ignored if Tony did not wish for company.

The plant person would not have noticed the light footsteps behind him, but the clearing of his throat snapped him out of his mournful stupor. With a flinch, his arms flailed as he twisted around to stare up at the vampire, cringing as if ready to defend himself.

Slowly, upon realising who it was, he allowed his arms to lower. His thoughts weren't on the counsellor's odd getup at all, but his sudden and unexpected appearance. Whether his company one that he would appreciate or not, he did not know. He did not appear to bring any ill intention with him, but who knew? "G-good... good day, sir," he stammered out, his gaze retreating back to the mess below.

For a moment, it would have seemed as if he'd forgotten his presence. His eyes were focused completely, his fingers tightening their grip around the bars. What had been underneath when this had happened? What if he were not the only one to succumb to the falling ceiling? The rat girl had come to mind, and perhaps a glimpse of Rein, but he could not be certain. And who else? It worried him.

He twitched slightly, before murmuring quietly and almost inaudibly under his breath. "What... happened?"

Having not really talked to the librarian since those peculiar theatre shenanigans, Richard wasn't exactly sure where they stood, or how he himself felt about the man, for that matter. However, for now all personal matters were pushed aside, overshadowed by pity. He had heard that the plantperson was one of those who suffered the most in the collapse, but seeing the man up close was different than just hearing about it. He looked really worse for wear. With a frown, Richard merely nodded in return to the greeting, then stood and watched him in silence.

He was about to turn away and leave to continue with the labor, leaving the librarian to his mourning, when the question was asked. Richard sighed and approached the banister to lean against it, looking over the destroyed site.

"I am not sure." he said, regret in his voice. "I wasn't here when it happened. Apparently, some strange apparitions haunted the castle, then finally, the roof of the tower partially collapsed, taking the clock heart and the floor beneath with it."

He paused.

"I'm... sorry."

He did not tear his gaze away as he spoke, he merely listened with a slight, slow nod of his head. Eyes still desperately skimmed over the scene, searching for something that would renew his hope. Yes, they were cleaning it, it would get better, and everyone was helping. But then another thought crossed his mind; just what had it been like days before this? Such thoughts were better off not existing.

--And Dean Kale's room, he mentally added to Richard's words.
Then the apology came. He turned his head upwards towards his face, blinking. "Please, there is no n-need for any... s-sympathy," he shakily insisted. It wasn't he who needed after all. Or at least, that's what he convinced himself.

"Was... Was anybody hurt?"
He looked up towards the counsellor with a new, worried interest - his anxiety apparent on the way he seemed to shift uneasily.

Ah. How noble. Richard looked down at the librarian with a weak smile, appreciating how he dismissed his own suffering despite how obvious it was. When Tony turned his head towards him, though, and their eyes met, Richard could only stand it for a moment before having to look away. It was much easier to treat Tony like a person when not seeing what a gangly little alien he was.

"There were quite a few casualties, but thankfully, none fatal." He gave a shrug. "Some pretty bad bruises, some scratches, but honestly, it could have been a lot worse."

It was... quite suspicious, actually. Castles which had been standing tall for hundreds of years didn't just collapse in on themselves for no reason; and neither did several tonnes of stone, wood and metal fall upon a room full of people causing as few injuries as they did here. Richard could just bet that some sort of magic was involved.

Shaking his head with a sigh, he chanced another glance at the librarian.
"How are you feeling?" he asked gently, leaving it up to Tony to decide whether he was inquiring about his physical or mental state.

A Mournful Loss Empty Re: A Mournful Loss

Post  Tony Sharp Thu Jan 31, 2013 3:02 pm

"I see..." He looked down, shifting restlessly. He'd winced at first, but as the news became lighter, a noise like a sigh escaped him. Nothing awful. Though, he did wonder if Richard were merely being careful with his words to make it seem less than it actually was; the others had done the same. But he decided to place trust in his words for now, misplaced or not. Any good news at all was to be savoured in the darkness. "Thank goodness...."

It was the second question that perplexed him, in a way that he simply didn't know how to respond. Optimism was to be maintained, yes. He, physically was getting better, that much was plain. Yet, he found himself raking his mind for the right words to say. The normally loquacious librarian, for the first time, was at a loss of words. These ruins, combined with the damage and the injuries, it was the worst thing he'd ever encountered. It was all so bizarrely surreal, and unbearably heart wrenching and...

"I am feeling... just... fine." His calm, shaking voice suddenly became a higher, more desperate screech. "Never... ask... again!"
As the vampire looked to him, he returned the gaze sharply, before standing to his feet. "Do you not see that there is more to worry for than some tattered plant like myself? Something has been lost here... Such a beautiful, timeless, castle, lost to the unrelenting forces of nature... What will go next? The very balcony we stand on will crumble, I fear. The books we cherish here, the artefacts, the memories... it will all be gone."
Choked up, his hands loosened their grip on the bars, raising to cover his face.

Even though he was watching the librarian and could see the signs of his tension, he couldn't help flinching slightly at the abrupt raise of voice. Richard shifted around, leaning on the railing with one elbow to face Tony fully. A quick glance at the balcony beneath their feet couldn't be helped at the mention of possibility of its collapse, but apart from that, his attention remained on the librarian throughout his rant. Slowly, Richard raised an open palm, hoping to calm the plantperson down just a little.

"I see the reason for your concern, but surely, it's not as bad as you're making it out to be..." he said, his brow creasing. "We're doing all we can to prevent further damage."
He wasn't sure who this 'we' was supposed to be, and what were they doing, but it was an useful phrase when faced with somebody in a state like that. It took the responsibility off their shoulders. Richard's gaze drew up to the hole in the ceiling, through which a dark, clouded sky peered inside, threatening to drown them all underneath wet snow as a final act in this drama.
He wished he felt as optimistic as he was trying to pretend he was.

The counselor sighed, looking down to Tony again. "You should first allow yourself to heal, and then worry about the castle." His tone was gently coaxing, like a stern but caring mother's. "You are in no shape to help out right now."

Not as bad as...? He snapped his yellow gaze towards the other's blue one. Although the words had been intended as an assurance, it seemed to have struck an uncomfortable nerve somewhere. His jaws split open, as if moments from spluttering out a protest, but it was eventually politeness that stopped him. He was only trying to help... however unorthodox his wording was. "Yes... You should be..." The bitterness was not absent from his voice.

His hands resumed curling tightly around the bars before him, as he glanced towards the figures below. It was only a matter of time before everything else began to cave in on itself. It was all a hopeless endeavour.

"I have spent the last few days recovering," he responded without looking to him. "I am... so tired of waiting."
Experimentally, he looked to his fingers, before he would force himself to grow them out. They extended upwards, for about an inch, before they shrank and curled backwards. He felt just a tad more drained. No matter how much he wished to deny it, he simply did not have the energy to assist.
"I hope that you are helping twice as much in my place," he said with a sigh.

Richard winced slightly at the sharp look he was given. Okay, perhaps debasing the credibility of the man's - man's? - worry was not the smoothest move. A bit miffed with his blunder, he cleared his throat and distracted himself by depositing the empty bag onto the ground. It seemed that he would not be immediately returning to the work.

Tony could tell him a dozen times that no sympathy was necessary, but as he watched the librarian struggle with his vines, he couldn't help but feel sorry for him... as mixed as Richard's feelings were on those appendages and the memories he had of them. Half-consciously, he shifted back a bit, as if to distance himself from them.

"I am." He gave a firm nod. "We all are." He paused, looking out over the library. The hour being quite late, there were few people left - actually, he was pretty sure that they were on their own now. Humming, he glanced to the librarian. "You can help out regardless, I think... Tell me, did you see any signs that this might have happened? Things that weren't obvious as they were happening, but from the perspective of time, hinted that this was coming? It would be extremely useful in preventing this story from repeating."

The plantperson seemed unaware of the other's movements as he dropped his bag and shifted away, though if he had noticed, he'd surely be uninterested either way. His mind was still occupied by the recent calamities and the everythingess of their consequences. He nodded to the confirmation without glancing to him, feeling that bit more assured about the state of the academy. Yes, everyone was helping... but was that enough to avert another impending disaster?

His mind didn't dwell on it long, for the next question soon arrived. He let out a low hum of concentrated thought, fidgeting restlessly with his hands on the bars. "I... Yes... There may have been a... few signs." The words seemed forced, as if he didn't really want to admit it at all. "Occasionally over the past few weeks, there's been a few... collapses; not quite as big as this... Perhaps a few bricks or so." He looked away guiltily. "I made an earnest effort to repair whatever damage had happened to these walls... And I had been naive enough to think that the problem would not grow any worse...I was so horribly mistaken."

Tearing his eyes away from the wreckage, he finally found it in himself to look to the vampire again. "The Gods must really hate us all, don't they? There is no other entity that I can blame for this."

A Mournful Loss Empty Re: A Mournful Loss

Post  Richard Wallace Sun Feb 03, 2013 10:50 am

Richard listened in somber silence, watching the librarian. So... it had been coming. How very naive of him indeed. He considered saying something about Tony making sure to not keep the knowledge of such alarming events to himself ever again, but the ruined library spoke for itself better than any words he could use. Still... he couldn't help himself tutting. Just to make sure the message went through.

The other thing Tony had said deserved a more direct answer. Richard raised his eyebrows in mild surprise. So, were the plant-people religious...? In fact, what what were they? Only now did he realize that he knew next to nothing about the creature in front of him; were there more like him? Where did he come from? How come something so obviously inhuman was eloquent and seemingly educated in such a human way? And, most importantly, how come Richard hadn't come to consider these questions before?

Hmm.

He shrugged. "I have learned to blame the malice of men before resorting to more supernatural culprits... Well, supernatural..." He rolled his eyes slightly and flipped a hand in exasperation. "I suppose that everything in the school, ourselves included, counts as some kind of 'supernatural'."

Richard looked down at Tony, turning his chin up with a wry smile.

"In this case, yes, I would blame something supernatural."

The noise that Richard made didn't escape Tony's notice, and he found himself cringing further under the shame. There was nothing more that Tony wanted than to give the library's walls more than a shoddy patching. They'd been crying for help, and he'd ignored it for pure, unleaded optimism. The sheer awareness of knowing that he'd been responsible for this simply struck him as the most awful act he'd ever committed.

As Richard spoke, a new realisation seemed to dawn on him. He raised his head, blinking his eyes slowly, his gaze still focused upon him. Of course, it had seemed that only something so powerful and relentless could have torn down the tower, but his words started to make him think twice.

"I... Pardon me, for just a moment, but... are you meaning to imply that..." His eyes glanced warily around for a moment. "That someone might have caused this? No no, but... someone from this castle? A student? A member of our staff?" His voice, as shaky and as worried as it sounded, carried a trace of accusation with it. "Yourself...?"

A Mournful Loss Empty Re: A Mournful Loss

Post  Richard Wallace Thu Feb 07, 2013 9:17 pm

Feeling his hip starting to protest against the prolonged standing, Richard leaned against the railing to shift at least some of his weight there. The librarian's cluelessness amazed him. It sounded as if he had not even considered the possibility of the culprit being more mundane than a deity. He was so, so naive... as if all of his knowledge of the world came from books. Which was most likely the case. Much like the Headmistress...

His musing was interrupted by Tony's accusation towards him, and Richard couldn't help a huff and a roll of his eyes. "I am no guiltier than you are." he said curtly. Well, except Tony was guilty, in a way. He knew of a possible danger, yet did not realize its significance, did nothing to prevent it, nor told anybody who would take action. Thrice stupid.

"I have no idea who is to blame. All I am saying is that I highly doubt that this happened only out of the Almighty's will, when the building is filled with creatures both powerful and unstable." Shrugging, he looked out over the carnage again. "I'm just curious as to why the Headmistress..."

Suddenly, his voice trailed off. He continued to stare at the library, as if he had spotted something incredibly interesting, but his gaze was unfocused, aimed inwardly.

Then, rapidly unfreezing, he cleared his throat and glanced down in Tony's direction. "Well, as to why she hasn't shared with us yet the knowledge of who did it. She should be able to locate them with ease, I expect. Perhaps she simply wants to deal justice herself..."

Oh God.

Post  Tony Sharp Thu Feb 07, 2013 11:31 pm

Even after Richard's denial, he held his suspicious glare for a few moments more, before finally deciding to give up on it. He had not really been prepared to hinge his blame upon him. In fact, he wasn't sure if he could really put his energy into blaming anything but himself right now. He simply felt hollow inside.

He was listening along thoughtfully to his words, that is, until he suddenly trailed off. The attempt that he made to follow his gaze only led him back towards the wreckage. Was there something of significance with the headmistress...?
Well, he knew of her illness. Not of specifics, but it had least rendered her incapable of continuing her duties as headmistress. He knew that the castle had weakened as a result. But he had just bowed his head and gone along with it. The academy would continue to function with the deans in charge. Whatever was Richard suspecting?

And then he continued. He couldn't belp but suspect that that was not entirely what Richard had on his mind, but he did not question it. He squinted thoughtfully, before tightening his grip on the bars. With that, he pulled himself as upright and as tall as he could manage. "If she does know," he started, looking to him deliberately. "Then I wish to speak to her. I must know." He tilted his head towards the destruction. "I could not allow... this... to ever happen again."
No, preventing future incidents would never erase his mistakes of his past. Those were the memories that would cling to him like constant, bitter reminders. But if there was something to do be done about it, he would do it.

"Take me to her."
He moved forwards, reaching to grasp the leg of his jeans.

Rather than panicked, it seemed that the realization made him feel somehow... blank. His thoughts, rather than frantic, were like gears slowly and precisely turning to devise a plan for the future. The librarian's voice was merely background noise, easy to tune out, that is until he saw it fit to tug on Richard's trousers. That's when a spark of irritation lit up within him and he took a step back, shaking off the intruding limb.

"It is the middle of the night." he spoke through his teeth. "Even if she wasn't ill and resting, she would be sleeping."

And immediately, the counselor felt immensely guilty for treating him like that. If only he knew what was it about Tony that got on his nerves so, he could convince himself to not let it happen again, but as such, he was at the mercy of the irrational feeling. Sighing, he shut his eyes, then opened them to give the librarian a kinder, slightly apologetic look. Tony was only trying to help, after all...

And perhaps he didn't have to do it alone.

Richard shifted slightly, really wanting to either walk or sit down at that point. "Do you want to see the library up closer? I could take you to it, if you're not fit to descend the stairs." He cleared his throat, glancing aside. "And in the meantime... What do you know about poltergeists?"

The leg slipped out of his grasp, and Tony looked sharply up at the counsellor, confused, and even more offended. As if he weren't aware of such trivial details! He'd deemed the situation vital enough for the time of day to matter little. The sooner they acted, the better, and sweet Everly could catch up on her disgustingly human habits another time.

He held back his protests to allow Richard to finish speaking, though it was obvious that it was only out of forced politeness. A scathing, judgemental squint never left his expression. It took but a moment's contemplation before he scoffed.
"Well, perhaps you're right. I'm sure we're all aware that lying around is far more important than any sort of tragedy." The bitterness in his voice was unmistakable, but he dismissed it with an abrupt wave of his vines as if it no longer mattered.

He didn't really want to see the library any closer - the view here was awful enough. But 'wanting' wasn't a part of the decision process. "Take me. I'd better see how bad it really is."
He extended his arms upwards, considering the latter question as he did so. "They're troublesome spirits that go around causing a ruckus and frightening the innocent," he huffed. "But every account of them is a myth, I presume. Why do you ask?"

Sighing, and wishing that he believed in some sort of a higher power so that he could pray to it for patience, Richard leaned down and picked up the creature, trying to be gentle. "You don't understand." he said flatly. "You don't understand at all."

Yes, he did remember the result that saying something along those lines had on Tony.

Slowly, trying to not shake the other as he carried him, he started making his way towards the staircase, and then down. "I'm asking, because the Headmistress is a... being, that is in some ways similar to one. Not in the ways you'd described, of course." As he walked and talked, his full, heedful attention was on his steps and on the way ahead. He didn't want to examine the plantperson up close. At all. "She is... linked to the castle somehow. Therefore, it is vital that her sleep not be disturbed." He couldn't resist his tone being monotonous, lecturing in a way. "Do you see now?"

He could explain further. But he was curious as to whether the supposedly so brainy librarian would put the pieces together himself... or it if were solely book smarts that he had.

A Mournful Loss Empty Re: A Mournful Loss

As it usually was, the sensation of being lifted was a strange one, especially by someone of a much taller stature than himself (he reluctantly admitted). He winded his arms around around his wrist for extra support, and allowing his legs to dangle in the air.

'You don't understand'.
At that single remark, he stared towards Richard again, indignant as ever. The sort of look that was not just curious for an explanation, but demanded one with his every being. It was constantly infuriating, being treated as if he knew no better. He was aware that he was in no fit physical condition, but his mind was as functional as ever. He knew that he simply couldn't be wrong.

"Yes, I see," he snapped impatiently, almost as soon as Richard had finished speaking.
It was for a few moments after that that his words still replayed in his head, unable to help analysing them a bit further. A link with the castle... a sleep that must not be disturbed. But why? What sort of link...? Was it possible...?
Slowly, but surely, his squinted, leery scowl started to soften, his yellow eyes widening. There was a noise like a gag in the back of his throat.
No. No, he wasn't buying it.
There was a sharp hiss from the librarian as he craned his neck forwards, snapping his jaws towards Richard's eye; a wordless display of anger.

Did he really 'see'? Somehow, Richard doubted it, but kept that to himself as he kept staring ahead. As much as he wanted to glance down to watch the librarian's face for signs of his thought process, the desire to not see that creepy sideways mouth from this close a distance won out. While Tony remained silent, Richard simply kept focused on his step, descending the stairs carefully. He didn't approve of himself thinking such thoughts, as he had hoped to leave prejudice in the past, but he had to admit to himself that had he not been in his work rags, he would not have offered to touch the plantperson out of his own initiative.

It turned out, though, that it was not to be. With only the odd gurgling noise as a warning, the mouth full of teeth suddenly moved towards his face, and Richard reeled back rapidly, holding out his arms with the librarian in them as he stumbled down the last few steps of the spiral stairway, barely keeping his balance. "The hell was that?" he hissed, glowering, tempted to just chuck the creature to join the remains of his precious library. "If you want me to drop you, just say so."

What was a hiss turned into a squeal of surprise as the librarian clung tighter to his outstretched arms, desperate not to fall. The moments were slow and precious during the stumble, and by the time they were over, Tony had retreated backwards from the vampire as far as he could manage.

He blinked, before gaping his jaws in offence. "Well! Excuse me! At least I'm not the one trying to frighten others with pure, unadulterated nonsense!" He scoffed. "Ridiculous!"
Immediately after he'd uttered it, he realised that his words might just qualify as accepting Richard's 'offer', and he made a quick attempt to amend it. "Pardon me, but you simply should not suggest ideas like that." He cleared his throat. "Quite preposterous."

Denial. That's all it was.
Denial that the collapse of the castle might be linked to their dear headmistress. And denial that Tony himself might've been moments from traipsing in and causing the next one.

A Mournful Loss Empty Re: A Mournful Loss

As Richard kept staring at the librarian, slowly his angry expression grew blank, and finally he inclined his head. "Fair enough." he said, in a casually polite, yet somewhat icy tone. "I do apologize."

Figuring that Tony was capable of walking the rest of the way himself, he leaned down to gently set the plantperson on the ground. The moment he was off off his arms, the counselor took a step back, letting his pose become a deep bow instead as he brought one hand to his chest. "In the future, I shall strive to refrain from divulging onto you information or ideas towards which you might find yourself unfavorably disposed." He stood up straight. "There is no need to trouble your fine self with knowledge that is, as you put it, 'ridiculous'... True as it might be." The last sentence was spoken quieter, Richard's eyes narrowing as some spitefulness seeped through the cracks of his calm expression. There was probably no need to be so caustic, he realized, but Tony just annoyed him; plus, it was a convenient way to take out his anger at his own inaction and feelings of guilt.

With a light huff, he turned away on his heel and walked a few steps towards the rubble pile, stopping to look over it. The work had progressed, but there was still a lot to do.

His judgemental stare was effortlessly maintained throughout the apology, as well as the moment where Richard set him down. It was a relieving sensation to return to his feet, even if merely staying upright was a task. He hadn't exactly felt safe in his hands, given that he'd be capable of crushing all his limbs again just by squeezing his hands shut. He tottered slightly as he regained balance, before twisting to face Richard again, just in time to hear him continue.

It seemed that counsellor was learning just how to grind his gears in the worst way possible - something which the plantperson found ironic, given his occupation. But this was no counselling session, regardless.
"If you simply intend to mock me with your words, Mr Wallace, then I confess that it isn't working at all," he huffed, his scowl twitching in a way that seemed to imply otherwise. "I have no reason to trust you, given your history of deceit."

He tore his gaze away from the vampire, looking towards the-- oh. Oh dear. It seemed a lot bigger from this angle than it did from the balcony. He paused momentarily, eyes flicking worriedly over the fallen structures.

At first, he only smirked to himself, knowing full well that his prickly words had, regardless of Tony's claims, reached their target. His contentment didn't last long, though. Ah, mistakes of the past coming back to bite him. One night of drunken shenanigans, something which, he had to reluctantly admit, might've been a nervous breakdown... with disastrous results. It was a truly loathsome thought that out of all of the people on the island, this diminutive alien radish could well be the one who knew Richard best.

And was, therefore, the most dangerous.

The demolished landscape in front of him seemed to fit his mood as he looked over it with his sullen gaze, letting silence reign for a moment. Tony needed some time to take it all in, and Richard needed some time to think. He folded his hands behind his back.

Finally, he cleared his throat and looked to the librarian. "Yes." he said, his tone serious, businesslike. "However, you have no reason not to believe me, either. My current occupation as a school counselor entails with it the interest in keeping the school in one piece. Spreading false rumors about how to save the building goes against that interest, and so, I have nothing to gain from lying to you."
He stared at the librarian, raising one eyebrow questioningly. Hopefully, as shaky as their relationship was, the logic - and honesty - would speak to Tony regardless.

He stepped lightly over the smaller chunks of rubble, twisting his head to catch a full view of the wreckage to either side. Quite simply, it was colossal. Tony knew that, even if he fully recovered, that he could not possibly remove such structures by himself. Perhaps he could grow to momentous heights and shift it just a little, but such would take months. He would require a lot of assistance... that seemed to include the man standing here with him now.

He listened to what he said carefully, and part of him wanted to bite back with a witty remark. Yet, every other inch of him just didn't have the enthusiasm to compete in verbal combat. The bad news was settling on his chest like an anchor, and this useless 'argument' really was only sprouting from his own denial. He could hear the truth in his words. It seemed logical, and it wasn't that he found flaws in it. He just wanted to find flaws in it - there was an abundance to be found in Richard himself. Maybe he was mistaken.
He offered him but a quick glance. "...Of course." It was quick, curt, and dismissive, with a tone that seemed to tread the very thin, blurred line between 'sarcasm' and 'genuine'.

Approaching a large gear that was jammed upright between various wooden pillars and blocks, he gave it a quick, assessing glance, before crawling closer, poking around in the rubble as if looking for something small.
"Current occupation," he murmured, as if to himself. "I do wonder how long it will last..." He glanced to the vampire, addressing him again. "I'm quite curious to know, how much do you really care for... all of this?" He gestured not just to the wreckage, but vaguely towards the entirety of the room. "A thoughtless obligation, I hope not?"
His tone was forcibly casual and lightly interested, but inside, he was quite prepared to take his answer on personal grounds.
