Post  Tony Sharp Sun Mar 10, 2013 12:51 pm

He hadn't left the library for at least a month now. Why bother? He'd forced himself to step outside a while ago, but the moment he'd even dared to, he could think of nothing of merit to do other than to return to the library. There was nothing out there; but there was everything to stand for within here.

For a start, there was the flower, growing as tall as ever with the approaching spring. It had not yet bloomed, but it was starting to reach two metres in height, and the leaves puffed out wide - a sight that was certainly hard to ignore upon entering the room.

Secondly was the additional task that Tony had taken upon himself. The wreckage had been cleared, but the room had not yet been restored to its prior integrity. Things had been lost. Many of the books had been destroyed beyond repair. It was times like these that a perfect memory was a blessing.

On the couch, he was sitting on his knees, an old, dusty typewriter just in front of him. Manuscripts were piled to either side of him, and by his feet. The plant was just before him - he made sure to keep it within his sight at all times. His fingers stretched out before him, before tapping away on the keys quickly and without pause. Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. He could recall the entire thing, he would just need to... write it down. He would rewrite everything. The texts would all be restored by his own hand.

The way to the library was familiar enough to not take any longer than it should despite Audi's nose being buried in the book she was going to return. She just couldn't stand the thought of idling when traveling through the long corridors of the castle, with how much of that all of its inhabitants had to do in a day. Thumbing through a book she had already read was still some kind of productivity.

Mineral Composition of Sedimentary Rocks

More books on geology would be necessary. This one had proven to be much less useful than she had expected... than what she needed.

Since the Winter Ball, Audi had found herself putting on weight, and the hips rolling underneath her short skirt were much fuller than they had been but a few months before. No more energy-wasting... incidents were happening. Well, most of the time, they weren't. In a bag tied to her leather belt, bouncing against Audi's thigh as she walked, a few chicken wings and an apple grabbed from the kitchen were waiting for the eventuality she would need them.

Prying her eyes from a picture of the chemical composition of dolomite and closing the book with a sigh, she entered the library. A nervous glance was thrown around the walls, as if expecting them to begin trembling and collapsing at any time. But it seemed that for now, it was safe... and if it wasn't, not going to the library was not a possibility, anyway. Tucking the tome under her arm, the ratgirl lightly bounded through the room towards the reception desk, where she expected to see the still-slightly-mangled visage of the librarian. He was not there, though. Standing up to the tips of her toes haphazardly to widen her field of vision, Audi looked around the large room trying to spot the plantperson. Well, the library was fairly empty, so perhaps breaking the silence wouldn't hurt that much.

Tony was typing away, quite immersed in the task at hand.

Lennie held his closed hand away from George's direction. "It's on'y
a mouse, George."
"A mouse? A live mouse?"
"Uh-uh. Jus' a dead mouse, Audi. I didn't kill--

He stopped suddenly. Audi? Why had he typed Audi? Great, two pages in, and he'd already blundered, just great. He tore the paper off the typewriter, crumpling it in his hands, before realising at that moment that a voice had called for him. He raised his head, before his beady yellow eyes settled on a familiar shape that had entered the room. His hands clasped together with momentary delight, before he waved his hands in an eager effort to grab her attention.

"Uhm... I'm here...!"
His voice squeaked slightly with the uncertainty of raising his voice in such a place.

Ears perked up as they caught Tony's voice and her gaze was drawn to where he was sitting. Wasting no more time, Audi lowered herself down to the ground and lightly trotted through the library. Worriedly, her gaze traveled up once to the ceiling with he worry that whatever remained of the roof would collapse precisely as she was underneath it, then she shook her head energetically to perish the thought. Slowing down as she reached the plant, Audi's gaze lingered on it as she passed it by. It was getting pretty darn big...

As she looked up to Tony, she tilted her head and smiled in greeting, then held out the book she had brought. "To return." she explained, before her attention was drawn to the typewriter. Stepping forward, Audi craned her neck to peer curiously at the mysterious machine. "What is this?"

He tossed the crumpled sheet behind the couch, hearing the soft rustle as it landed on the floor. Mentally noting that he would sweep it later, for now, he turned his attention to his confessedly favourite student. He couldn’t help but feel a tiny glimmer of pride as she noticed the plant – his plant.

As she offered the book forth, he craned his head to glance over it, before accepting it eagerly with both hands. “Thank you, Audi, I hope that it proved to be useful for you.”

As he set it to his side, he raised his head again at her question. He wasn’t quite sure whether she was referring to the typewriter itself, or what he was working on, but he assumed that it was more likely to be the latter. “Oh, I’m simply rewriting an old, classic tale, Of Mice and Men. It had been damaged during the fall, you see, the library simply must be restored!” His tone was quite optimistic and cheery as he rolled a new, blank sheet of paper into the machine.

A wry sneer pulled up her lip slightly, but she quickly forced it off, not wanting to show too much displeasure about the book failing to meet her expectations. What if it made him sad? Besides, there was something much more interesting at hand. She listened to his explanation while looking over the machine, and while he didn't say what it was, it didn't take a genius to figure out what those buttons marked with letters did. It was some sort of a writing contraption. Audi gave an absent nod, then stepped forward and clambered onto the couch next to Tony, hoping to observe the writing in action. As she settled down comfortably as if it was the most natural place for her to be, her gaze was glued to the typewriter, but then the close proximity of the librarian reminded her of the state he was in. Frowning with concern, she leaned in his direction, staring insistently with eyes wide open. "How are you?

As Audi took residence on the couch next to him, he offered her a quick glance of satisfaction, before returning his attention to the typewriter. It seemed that she was intent to see the writing in action, so that, he did, his fingers swiftly pattering over the keys without so much as pausing to think about what he was writing.

At her question, he stopped, giving her a curious glance. Shortly after, a quiet chuckle bubbled up, and he raised an hand to softly pat her head. "I am fine, thanks to you."

He returned his gaze to the typewriter, fingers settling as if to begin typing again. But instead, he seemed to change his mind as he sat up, gesturing towards the flower in the centre of the room. "Have you seen her?" he excitedly chirped. "She's my flower. I made her. Isn't she beautiful?"

The answer, together with the patting, made Audi positively swell up with pride and happiness. Smiling widely, she sat up straighter, like a proper rescuer should. She wanted to correct, 'me and Esha' just to be fair, but at that moment she couldn't trust her voice not to come out funny.

So taken up by that she was, she didn't pay much attention when Tony spoke up, aside from it being about the plant. "It's nice." she answered somewhat offhandedly, then felt a little guilty immediately afterwards and added "Looks tasty."

It sure did look so, and unusual overall. Audi wondered if it would be for consumption or brewing some sort of a potion. Those were really the only uses for plants... but wait, Tony was a plant as well, no? One that talked and walked. Completely outside his division in the great chain of being... well, it was a loose concept, but for a creature to mess with it to such degree was quite extraordinary. What a find!

Blinking, the ratgirl snapped back to reality, not sure if the librarian had said anything in the meantime or not. This was more important, regardless. She looked to him sharply, with a sort of greedy curiosity that seemed hunger-like.

The pride within him was inflating like a balloon as Audi observed his flower. However, such pride quickly deflated at her remark. ...Tasty? His flower... To be eaten? His jaw slowly started to widen in something resembling horror, his stiff hands raising to his face. The images! The morbid display in his head!

He was torn between his respect for her and the desire to defend the poor plant. "I... Uhm... I thank you, but she is not to be consumed, I-- no, I'd much rather you..." He trailed off at the realisation that she didn't even appear to be listening. In fact, she was now looking at him intently. For a brief second, he wasn't sure if to be afraid or not, until her question finally arrived. It was more relieving than it should have been, yet at the same time, there was a pang of disappointment.

"Well... As you can see, I appear to be a species of plant of some sort, although I have been unable to identify which - perhaps I may be a species fund entirely outwith the bounds of Earth, although, my studies have been inconclusive, and there appears to be various bits of evidence that I may have links to the human body, but however, given our vast array of differences, I cannot be certain, in fact, I may be the only one existing of our kind and I will never find one like me who will---"

His stopped suddenly, realising that he'd somehow gone off on a huge ramble. And for what? That wasn't really the question, was it? He looked to her apologetically, shrugging. "My short answer... I don't know."

Despite his answer being rather mangled and full of unnecessary words, Audi listened attentively, showing no impatience. Only when he was done, talking for so long and in the end saying nothing at all, her nose scrunched up in displeasure. "Okay." she said. So, this was a mystery to be solved. She leaned forward slightly, regarding Tony with an interested, impartial look, rather like he was a peculiar specimen to be studied. Come to think of it, he had survived quite a beating... and was, undoubtedly, mentally gifted. Hmm.

Audi reached for one of his hands to grab it gently and pull it closer for examination. How come he was a plant that moved? Was he related to mimosa or flytraps? "Where are you from?" She glanced up to his face. "How were you born...?"

Given that she'd just admitted that the equivalent of his child was like some sort of edible treat, Tony could not at all feel at rest as he stared at her. He fidgeted, his fingers coiling around each other, until one was pulled towards the ratgirl.

The question was, again, unexpected, and he simply blinked to her before summing up the words to respond. "Well... I believe that I originated somewhere on the outskirts of London... but as for my 'birth', I..." He trailed off as the memory came to him. "I... came out of the ground. I woke up, and I had to climb my way to the surface, and when I looked back, there was nothing there... I believe I grew there."

Shaking his head out of his slight daydream, he looked away coyly. "I know not why you want to know anyway, it's as much of a mystery to me as it is to anyone else," he scoffed, continuing to patter away at the machine.

As she listened, the only thing moving were her whiskers, which twitched from time to time. She let Tony's finger-stalks, or what have you, slide out of her grasp without protest; there was not much more to be learned from looking at them.

So, again, he just didn't know... Her gaze absent as she went over what he said to commit it to memory, Audi spoke quietly. "Precisely."

It was a mystery. Was that not enough of a reason so delve deeper into it? Besides, there was, possibly, something more at stake here. Letting out a 'hrrrm', she craned her neck forward to look him up and down. Sure, he'd survived being crushed completely, but his state was less than perfect... There were still improvements to be made.

She's my flower! I made her!

Audi hadn't quite put two and two together before, but when she did, her head snapped in the plant's direction immediately. She blinked once, then slid off the couch and scurried over to the flower so unreasonably blooming inside of a room. Once beside it, she knelt down, and began examining it; scanning with her eyes, brushing fingers against it, poking a claw into the hole from which it grew, even sniffing futilely. So focused she was on this task, it was likely she would not notice any distractions, lest the roof started falling again.

Precisely? He looked towards her for elaboration, but none came. Instead, the ratgirl had taken to inspecting the flower again, to which Tony freaked and practically flung himself off the couch, stumbling towards her with outstretched arms. "N-no! Get away...!" It was only then that he noticed that she was doing next to nothing in terms of actual harm.

The flower was vast, if it could even be called a single flower. It more resembled a multi-headed hydra of half developed heads, a plethora of stems and leaves tangling around each other in a dirty green labyrinth. Petals the size of coffee tables adorned its frame in bizarre, random spikes, each splattered with a sort of sunset palette. Crooked, yet elegant; the flower was mutated in a way that made it appear not only monstrous, but twistedly captivating.

Tony crouched by her side, and outstretched a hand to intercept her's. His gaze upon the student was intent and sincere. "Please. Be very careful with her."

The first impression was that for an offspring the plant was remarkably unlike its... parent. Much bigger, much more impressive, and, unfortunately, much less mobile.

It was just a plant.

Staring up at it, Audi scrunched up her nose, then startled slightly as her hand was touched. She looked to Tony, obviously perplexed, then patted his hand reassuringly. She didn't understand why was he so worried, but okay, she didn't need to know to oblige his wish. "The petals are pretty." she said with a small smile, then returned to looking the plant over. Well... The librarian said that he emerged from a hole in the ground, and the appearance of his body also supported the theory that he was, in fact, a root, save from perhaps his head...

With that thought in mind, she leaned down to the floor to examine closer what could be seen of the flower's roots. As she mulled over the idea, Audi's fur rose on its ends slightly and she gulped. If it was actually a plant person... it would topple the whole castle when it arose.

Tony drew his hand backwards at the silent reassurance, before a muffled squee escaped at her compliment, fingers intertwining with utter glee. Her sudden onset of caution seemed to go unnoticed by the plantperson, who was far too preoccupied with obsessively prideful thoughts. And she should be just as proud! If it weren't for her, he wouldn't be alive... and neither would this flower.

He reached closer to the roots, digging his fingers into the exposed dirt, looking eagerly towards Audi the entire time. "Would you like to watch me feed her?" he excitedly chirped. Of course, it was the perfect time for not only dinner, but his first demonstration to an audience.

Regardless of what her answer was, he started to proceed anyway, unable to hold himself back. The buried arm started to tremble and stretch, as if something beneath the mud was pulling it down. A faint squelching noise resounded. Tony's gaze became intent on his arm, as he watched it start to shrink and wither away until it was nothing more than a shrivelled twig extending from his body. With a last, stubborn yank and a 'snap', he pulled it out, leaving the stalks of his fingers sticking out the mud. On closer inspection, they weren't the only ones there.

He looked to Audi expectantly, giggling childishly under his breath.

Audi continued staring at the base of the plant in thought until Tony's fingers moved within her field of vision. She gave him an odd look. Feed? Didn't he mean 'water'...? Regardless, he didn't move to fetch anything, be it water or fertilizer. In fact, he seemed to be doing nothing at all. Audi's gaze grew more and more perplexed, until a weird gargle of a sound made her ear twitch and her head snap in its direction.

And then, it was impossible to look away.

Subconsciously, Audi began to slowly squirm away from whatever was underneath the floor. Her gaze flickered over the stalk. Was it something like... a plant version of an umbilical cord...? Oddly enough, the thought made the whole situation slightly less alarming. She stopped backing off after having traveled only a few inches, then sat still for a moment, staring at the flower blankly. This was way over her head, she realized. So many things were, really...

But of course, it was no excuse. Audi took a deep breath, then looked to Tony again soberly. "How... How did you make her?"

Audi was-- she was---- amazed, wasn't she?! Though, he couldn't tell if it was because he simply expected her to be, or that she actually was, but Tony wasn't inclined to tell the difference right now. Rightfully taking her question to be interest, he straightened his pose... until he realised what question it was.

"I... Well..." He hesitated, his fingers and what was left of his other hand intertwining with each other. "It's a long story, really... A seed, a magical script... This ground right here..." He stared intently towards the vast flower. "It didn't work when planted anywhere else, it was just this spot. Perhaps... Perhaps it's something about this castle, or this ground, or..."

Suddenly, he stamped his foot on the ground, keeling over to clutch his own head. "I don't know, Audi! There is so much that I fool myself into thinking that I know, but so many more things remain a mystery yet! I just do not know!" He let out a lowly hiss, before raising his head again to glance to Audi apologetically. He hadn't meant to snap...

It would be impossible to listen more intently than Audi did, with her head inclined and ears swiveled forwards, gaze trained on the librarian. She wondered if the apparent difficulty with which he was speaking was due to being hesitant about sharing the information... And then, that question was answered with his sudden outburst. She reeled back slightly in surprise, then quickly shook her head to show that she didn't mind. The frustration of not knowing something was one she knew well.

Instinctively, she reached out to pet him comfortingly on that bulging head of his. Honestly... she wished she could say his ignorance wasn't important, but what an unfortunate lie it would be...

"You must find out."

Her hand slid down limply to the floor as she looked at the strange plant again, dejected. So many things could go wrong -- how could he just... do something like that without knowing what was he doing? Was there just nobody she could respect left in the world...?

Tony didn't think himself capable of feeling anger against the ratgirl, but her words stepped on a nerve that sent a discomforting jolt of annoyance through him.  His hands (or, what was left of them) started to twitch, and his eyes squinted as he stared at nothing.  "I know, Audi, I have been searching for such answers for approximately my entire life."

He felt it as plain as day - that nagging feeling at the back of his mind, a craving.  It wasn't just a want, it was a need, like air, water and sunlight. No, no, no, it was just a feeling, he didn't need it, he didn't--
For those few brief moments, it seemed like he was distracted by something else entirely, before he snapped his gaze towards Audi.  "I'm sorry."  He didn't know if there was even something to apologise for, he just had to.  And, maybe there was. Maybe it hadn't happened yet.

He'd try talking again.  "If...  If you are, perhaps, interested in... in researching with me..." Suddenly, he seemed to struggle in getting the words out.  "...then, perhaps we could... discover....?" He glanced to her with the most hopeful look he could muster.

The flat accusation made her flinch slightly and broke her out of her grim thoughts. Yes... she wasn't exactly fair to him, he was trying to find out, and the plant itself was an attempt to learn by doing. Just... couldn't he do it elsewhere...? Still, she gave him a guilty side-glance and gathered resolve to apologize just when Tony did. Taken off-guard, Audi stared at him as he talked.

A part of her jumped for joy at the proposition, but another became wary -- what was with that straining out words all of a sudden? She didn't want to be suspicious of him, but she was. Still, if she really didn't want her gruesome visions to come true, it seemed there was no real choice but to agree.

"Well... okay." she said tentatively. "But how?"

Audi looked to the flower again, gaze traveling up its many branches and stems and leaves. It looked... valuable, certainly like a king of its genus at least. It looked like something that her Master would know all about. Her nose scrunched up.

"Voynich Manuscript..." she whispered, then her head snapped in Tony's direction again to give him an expectant stare. There were better books, of course, but that was the one that happened to be, well, accessible. In a way.

How? Well, if he knew, he would've done so a long time ago. He sat in simple silence, mulling over what could possibly be done. Likewise, his gaze shifted to the flower.  Perhaps if it was uprooted, they could...  No, that was simply out of the question. There had to be other ways...

At the whisper, he quickly exchanged a glance with her, his eyes wide. "The Voynich...?"
The first question in his head was, 'does she know of it?'  The second one that immediately followed was 'how much does she know?' He'd read the manuscript before, and nary could he make sense of it. It seemed so language-like, yet, unlike any language he'd seen.  While had tried to study it, he'd given up; there was no knowledge to be found there, only frustration and doubt.  It'd been a while since the thought of it had resurfaced.

And from her. He stared at her speechlessly, before leaning forwards eagerly, almost intruding her space.  "What do you know of the Voynich Manuscript?! Have you read it?  Did you understand it?  What does it say? What did it mean?!"
His voice increased in both harshness and pitch as he fixed his gaze on her.

Audi blinked and leaned away, taken aback by the aggressiveness of his questions. "Um." She shook her head slowly. "I have not read it. It's just a bunch of notes on... plants." Plants, indeed. With a shrug, she glanced to the flower growing beside them. It was about time that she got her hands on a copy of what was known as the Voynich Manuscript, anyway -- it did not contain anything she would have interest in, given the scope of her studies, but still it was one of the few writings that have leaked into public possession. And that was all that she could have now.

Well, aside from the one book she'd saved, but that was beside the point. There was nothing specifically on plants there.

She looked to Tony seriously. "Maybe it could help. It would still need researching, but maybe it could."

His intense, furious stare started to die down after realising that Audi knew little about the mysteries of the manuscript. So close! He was so close! He pulled away, clutching his head with barely restrained frustration. If Audi didn't know, then who did? No.. it wasn't hopeless yet. With their combined efforts... "...It might do, it might do," he chattered to himself under his breath, gazing at nothing.

Suddenly, he reached out to take her hand coiling his fingers around it. "Come with me! I will show it to you!"
Leaving no room for refusal, he started to tug on her hand, trying to dash towards a bookshelf. Of course, he lacked the strength to actually drag her, but the intention was there.

His reaction was really perplexing. What could have caused such dramatic gestures? She looked at him for a moment, tilting her head. Tony was just a really strange person in general. Sure, smart, but... a few books short of a library.

It was all forgotten, though, in the face of the fact that there was a copy of the Manuscript in this library. Audi made a small noise of joy, then quickly got up to follow him. "Okay, okay!" She looked forward to it terribly. Even putting helping the librarian aside, there was surely a lot to be gained from perusing the writing. Who knew, maybe it would even help her own agenda. As Tony himself proved, maybe plants weren't always so useless... but that would mean a great oversight in her master's plan, and that idea was hard to wrap her mind around. Maybe such creatures were just too rare to be subjects of research. She hummed, looking the other over again. It might do, it might do...

"What do you know of it?"

He was mildly pleased as Audi obliged, but paid little heed to it in what could only be described as a frantic skedaddle deeper into the library.  Ah, no no, this floor was fiction, wrong way--- He made a sharp turn the opposite way and began to scramble towards the stairs.

He couldn't ascend it as quickly as he wanted, but there was at least ample opportunity to answer her question. He turned his gaze towards her.  "Well, it's certainly an odd book..." He paused, almost as if that was the extent of his information, before shaking his head. "It's an old book, and I have reason to believe that its dates may reach far back by centuries! Its contents resemble nothing of other books of its nature, in fact, the script makes little sense at all! I was confessedly sure that the author had been insane at the time of writing, yet, with newfound perspective, I realise now there could be answers sealed within!"

He stopped momentarily to gaze off into nothing. "Yes...  From what I recall, there were many bizarre illustrations, of plants, of astronomy, and of people...  Could they be somehow linked? A connection? Oh my, so many exciting possibilities--- Yet, I recall it plainly in me that all attempts at decipher resulted in very little success, and I doubt that human language could be attributed to such writing...  Yes, where was I?"
Without the slightest pause, he hurried up the flight of stairs, content to ramble whether or not it had anything to do with the question.
