A Peek at the Sea

Shiver scowled his feeling of betrayal at the hand he had been fond of, as it now tried to intervene in his war upon the lemmer. He released his grip on Pai and hunched down in the grass, glaring up at the pair above him and growling all the while.

An unsuspecting frog in the nearby grasses ribbited happily. In an instant, Shiver had spun onto his side and struck his webbed fingers out to snatch it from the earth, venting his frustrations by squeezing the poor thing harshly between both of his hands until it near burst. The frog's body cracked beneath the mer's thin fingers and, frustrated that the deed had not satiated his rage, Shiver violently tossed the thing through the air as far as he could. It made it a small ways up the cliff where they had come from and disappeared into the long grasses. Shiver was still snarling quietly, glaring now in the general direction of the unfortunate amphibian's descent.

Please stop, you should probably calm down.. Pai thought, in a firm, yet gentle way of thinking.

Lemmer scoffed, as he turned around, as if to say 'talk to the tail' , and whipped his tail around so it hung on Pai's opposing shoulder.

Pai looked down at Shiver, smiling, wanting to settle with this dispute. After all, he did want more friends, in a strange new place like this.

He watched as Shiver sent an amphibian's life down the drain.

"Eh....." he muttered, slightly in disgust, but in respect for what Shiver may have planned to do with Lemmer, which Pai was glad he didn't.

He reached out his hand and gently rested it on Shiver's head.

"...sorry." he thought, quietly.

The tone Pai's thoughts took on reminded Shiver of the firm tone Everly would take with him sometimes when he got into things he shouldn't. It made him hunch his shoulders and scowl, but obey. He tried to calm himself, tense under the hand on his head, but he managed not to spin and bite the man.

Pai's apology confused him a little and the merlad glanced sidelong up at the professor, the mean scowl loosing a bit of it's impact.

Why... are sorry?

One webbed hand snaked up to claim Pai's hand again, pulling it from his hair and in front of his face, inspecting it while he waited for the professor to explain.

The lemmer was pretty much forgotten already since Shiver had taken out his anger on the frog and he did tend to be easily distracted.

"Well..." He paused as he thought of a way to put this shortly.

"I don't want any violence, so I'm sorry for what Lemmer's been doing." he thought.

He rubbed his head in confusion. "I think we should find a place to rest."

He sighed, then smiled down at Shiver.

The merlad scoffed but he didn't argue about Lemmer, so that was pretty much his way of accepting Pai's explanation. He released the professor's hand again and flopped back into the grass, wincing up at the sky. It wasn't nighttime yet, so Pai's next statement confused him.

You sleep.. not bedtime?

He scoffed again, as if sleeping before nighttime was ridiculous--even though he was often one to be caught napping at any random hour when he grew bored.

His gaze shot over to Pai and he caught the smile. He grinned back for a brief moment before catching himself and donning a scowl again.

Well..resting isn't necessarily 'sleeping', but more like taking a break to...'cool down' in a way. It's not night, yes, but people rest at any point of time, if they're tired, and such.

Shiver's smiling somewhat surprised him, but it gave him a nice feeling.

Lemmer snarled, but then crawled onto Pai's head and curled up into a little ball, snoring lightly.

Shiver looked thoughtful for a moment while he glared up at the sun. He thought he understood what the strange man meant. Wriggling a little in the grass to make sure it was comfy, he closed his eyes and lay still for a couple seconds. One eye opened to glare at Pai, then, and he frowned, still thoughtful. This was a nice spot wasn't it? He could fall asleep here, at least. It was warm under the sun. But if he remained in the sun for too long, it would be uncomfortably and difficult to return home.

Sun... makes crispy. He thought bitterly and scowled at the offending star. He tossed his forearm over his eyes and puffed up his chest with air, then released it in a long huff. Talking about rest made him feel a little sleepy. Perhaps chasing after the pink man and then trying to kill the furry thing had worn him out a bit. Why had he been chasing them again? He'd forgotten already.

Not this place?

It seemed as good a place as any to the merlad.

After hearing Shiver's thoughts, it was somewhat confusing to understand what he meant by 'crispy' but he got it later on.

So...we should move to a less sunny, but comfortable place? He suggested, oddly wondering if he was getting his grammar right with that statement.

Lemmer snorted, bored and pawed his way to the ground, while playing around with a grass blade.

Shiver shrugged and made raspberry noises with his lips, because he didn't really care what the funny looking man did. He stretched his arms out wide on either side and flopped his tail fin back and forth lazily, and eventually fell asleep under the warm sun.
